Buffalo's mayor mentioned using weed money for UBI a few hours ago too:

https://www.wgrz.com/article/news/p...98-96a0f1456f5a

quote:

And there would be major tax implications: a 9 percent state tax and a 4 percent local tax, which would be shared by counties and municipalities.

"We will in the City of Buffalo work with the members of the legislature, work with the members of the community, make sure that the money gets to low income communities," Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown said.

Tax revenue would go to education, community grants, and to drug treatment.

"It could be a combination of infrastructure, community program, universal basic income potentially," Brown said.

Are they sincere, or just trying to curry favor with Yang?

I feel like the left (in the US at least) has yet to fully understand how NGOs function in relation to and as basically part of the state.

Many leftists still have the liberal belief that there are reliable unbiased sources for everything. As a result, they end up getting a lot of their information from the network of NGOs that exist to support the agenda of the US government. Even if they recognize that these organizations aren't unbiased arbiters of truth, they'll still default to trusting them in the absence of direct proof that they're wrong.

edit: This also applies to media. The US basically avoids the need for "direct" state media and propaganda by having powerful incentives/disincentives in place that lead to all major media and NGOs supporting its agenda/ideology (and the partisan nature of our government creates an illusion that media isn't fully in lock-step with the government, since some partisan media may have minor disagreements if the government in power is from the opposing party).

I realize this is not the book thread, but does anyone have recommendations for books to read about Lenin and the Russian Revolution? Also Stalin. I've recently gotten into discussions about both and was really unhappy with my lack of knowledge.

I've only read Kotkin's first part of his as-of-yet-unfinished series on Stalin, but it's good. I have to say, I liked the one episode Mike Duncan did about Stalin's early career, and I expect we'll get more good stuff from him as well.

The best biography I've read on Stalin's early life is "Passage to Revolution" by Ronald Grigor Suny. It's engaging and also obviously has a lot of good pre-revolution background, but it's not a short read.

id recommend reading Lenin's writings themselves in addition to any history, it's a necessary compliment for getting the full picture

they are all available online or you can pick up one of the many Lenin anthologies published if you like paper books like me

My ask is for people considering moving to red states is they go to the rural areas. Most of the cities experiencing blue flight, it has done nothing but make it impossible to rent or to buy homes for the people who were already living there and weren't to blame for the states backwards policies anyway.

Noice, I'll have to give that a read sometime. One wouldn't think reading multiple books on one person's early life would be fun, but hey, it's got bank robberies and poo poo, that's badass.

Its worth noting that this book is a little dry because it goes into pretty close detail of everything that happened between February and October. Its not bad, just...dry.

It also doesn't have much on Stalin if you're looking specifically for info on him, other than noting "Boy, this guy kind of casts a long shadow on all these proceedings, huh."
