I think I peaced out after the whole rape thing they did, which was issue 110/144. Although I did not think that particular plot point was handled very well, it was more because I caught up with the releases and I just wanted to wait until the whole thing was done instead of reading an issue every month. And then I just forgot to get back to it.

There are definitely times where it gets a bit too mean-spirited and nihilistic, but really I found it to be fairly benign for Kirkman compared to Walking Dead.

The comic definitely has this problem more than comparable superhero comics. It's so verbose and full of characters just spouting exposition in huge text bubbles with the same expressions across panels too. Really I think so far the animation has been an improvement.

Edit:

If anyone is interested the whole series is half off right now

It's a Seth Rogen / Evan Goldberg joint -- Preacher, The Boys -- so they're not going to literally adapt the comic.

Probably because Science Dog is an actual comic book now and Hickman didn't want to include it into the Invincible licensing deal.

The Invincible Twitter account confirmed this. Science dog and tech jacket and the other spin-off/tie in characters are all licensed separately and it would be a headache to try to get clearance to use them in the show. Which is just, lol

Just binged the 1st three episodes and I am on board. My pet theory on Omni-Man's motivations. He feels like his son is too far behind power-wise, and wants put him through a school of hard-knocks training routine. Problem is that with the Guardians of the Globe around, the world is too safe and Mark won't go through enough hardship to toughen him up enough. I noticed Nolan only showed up the second it looked like Mark was about to bite it, so he will be around to save him if need be, but wants to let him get brought to the very brink first. This seems like a very petty reason to brutually murder eight people in cold blood, but Omi-Man gives me serious sociopath with a god-complex vibes so it fits for me. I don't buy the mind control explanation for a moment.

That's a pet peeve of mine in comics in general. It feels like most DC and Marvel do the thing where every other word gets bolded.

I had a thing where I'd annoy my friends by reading from a comic book and putting emphasis on every bolded word as I read them. It doesn't flow at ALL.

My personal theory wrt Omniman The claims that his race visits over planets to help them advance is pure fascist propaganda. From the way he acted, I suspect that this is their way of empire expansion. Go to a planet, find the strongest defenders, earn their trust, kill them, signal for your buddies to invade. This later part of the plan was somehow triggered, when Marc had his powers appear. It seems like Nolan was content with not having to do anything and a bit miffed when these powers eventually showed themselves.

Manga doesn't do the bolding so much so I basically stick with that, though I've kind of fallen off of reading all comics lately and gone back to books. Longer stories in cheaper packages.

3 episodes in and I'm liking this way more than I figured I would.

It being animated, it seems they're even more willing to depict random civilians being brutally killed than "adult" superhero takes like Watchmen or Boys. People go splat a LOT but I like the tone.

Overall I get major One Punch Man vibes from this, like a western OPM with some Boys thrown in.

And I knew this had big production values and some big names but the cast still keeps impressing me. Clancy Brown as Demon Detective is amazing.

I'll point out that the first 10 trades (~60 issues) are on Comixology Unlimited, and I think they do a seven day free trial, so if you wanna know if the comic is any good, you can check out a lot of it for free. Also the whole line is 50% off, Comixology always does massive sales for an IP whenever a big movie/show comes out.

One thing that you're gonna get in the comic that you can't really reproduce on the screen are Ryan Ottley's incredibly dynamic and minutely detailed splash pages. He gets poo poo for reusing assets panel to panel (not nearly as much as Cory Walker did tho) but since it's in service of giving him time to create these spectacular two-page tableaus it's totally worth it. Obviously the show is going to have access to other tools for spectacular visuals - I thought the 'Omni-man kills the entire Flaxian planet' sequence was the best example of that so far - but there's just something special about a great splash page.

Ccs

Ryan Ottley's art was a major reason I read Invincible for as long as I did. It's also great to have an american comic where the same artist stays on for nearly the whole run. I hate when I'm reading something good and then, whoops, that artist's time on the book is over, they go on to their next gig and their replacement can't do the characters half as well. It's especially jarring when the faces and eyes don't look consistent from issue to issue.

EXISTENCE IS PAIN😬
It's really growing on me. I enjoyed The Boys and this is a slightly different take on that genre.

My initial thought on Omniman- I thought this was some biological thing Vitruvians go through, some sort of "survival of the fittest" in that when one has offspring the parent turns into some rear end in a top hat to ensure the next generation is strong enough to survive and continue the species by having the younger one defeat the older one. Or maybe they're so hyper competitive as a species that the second there's two of them on one planet they'll start to get hostile to one another.

Poor aquarius, little guy seemed so excited when he got the call only to get murked like it was nothing. I'm guessing judging by the contraption Immortal is not gone for good and the CIA has plans for him.

I liked the interdimensional aliens repeatedly coming back over and over. I'm just imagining that alien warlord spending another ten years thinking "THIS TIME we'll win it! No way will they beat us after ten alien years of preparation!". The way Omniman just bodied their entire civilization really showed they wouldn't have gotten ONE try off had he not been in a coma.

I swear one of the guys in the tryouts looked like Saitama, I assume this was deliberate given all the other superhero jokes.

I'm enjoying Demon Detective gathering clues to solve the mystery. And the G men that have to deal with this superhero stuff all the time are fun to watch in action. It's interesting to see all the logistics that go into supporting super heroes. Super Jails also provide great material, I mean can you imagine some cosmic horror getting all excited realizing Thursday is Chicken Pot Pie night?

So which one was the real clone? Some real "I'm Sparticus" energy there.

It's a tiny bit more "teen" than I'd prefer, but yeah, this has been a lot of fun so far and the voice cast is unreal. I like the sense of humor it has too. One of the things that sold me was in the second episode, when this demon guy mysteriously shows up, and he's got the trenchcoat and hat and has red skin and talks very forebodingly in his gravelly voice -- and then Cecil is just like "gently caress you rear end in a top hat, you say one word to anyone else and I'll put a goddamn bullet in your brain", just no respect whatsoever. Considering who the voice actor is that HAS to be deliberate and a funny take. "Goddamit another dimensional invasion? It's only Tuesday. <sigh> Call Omniman and get Jenkins on the ready for cleanup level 5. Senator who has been an alien the whole time? Do we know from what planet and do they have a consulate? Btw Savage Dragon is a... weird comic. It's like if they took a typical superhero story and unlike in Invincible, where they went the violence route, they went the porn route instead.

Oh, the violence route is still very much covered in Savage Dragon too.

To keep this on topic, Invincible's first official appearance was in this issue of Savage Dragon, which is pretty hilarious.

Yeah, I'm doing a re-read and it's very easy to hear Cecil's dialogue in Goggin's voice. Much more so than say Eve in Gillian Jacob's voice, but they're definitely going for a different vibe with Eve in the show. Yeun matches up pretty well with Mark, it didn't occur to me until he and Sandra Oh were cast, but are Mark and his mom supposed to be Asian in the book too? Not that I care if it's different (especially since they used it as an opportunity to cast Yeun and Oh - who is especially delightful and even through four episode I can already tell this is a superior characterization) I'm just curious.
