They're "only" 40 Watts nominal load apiece, so leagues below proper HID/HPS setups, but 40 Watts in LEDs still generates quite a bit of heat, hence the giant gently caress-off copper radiators for something you can cram into an E27 socket.

I wish salaries were more openly discussed so I could gauge how good the raise I just got is. I’m happy with it simply because it’s the most money I’ve ever made in my life. But so was my last raise. And the one before that.

So many things have changed since I was in the corporate world before I joined the military in 2006, but when I was an accountant all my coworkers were constantly going from one company to the next, always getting a higher salary. The raises they’d get by staying at one company just wouldn’t compare to the amount by jumping ship.

From my MBA a few years ago and speaking with classmates, it seems it was the same around 2018-2019, but this was all before COVID, so I don’t know if the job market still allows that or if it’s best to sit with your current company for the time being.

I remember asking one of them how they answered the question of what salary they were expecting as they went into a new position with their MBA...say going from consult pre-MBA to finance post-MBA, and some of their answers were just “say competitive” so you didn’t lowball yourself. I agree though-especially as I look to retire in 5 years...how do I guesstimate what’s a good salary for a field? I’m guessing some networking and all that, but it seems like it’s still controversial to bring up the topic.

The Boeing 737-200QC is the undisputed workhorse of the skies.
An internal raise is 2-5%, if that; a moving around raise shouldn’t be less than 10%, but shoot for 20.

Internal promotions don’t exist anymore.

As someone who just retired and got my first big boy corporate job, I used LinkedIn and GlassDoor salary ranges in the area I was looking for the job title I was applying for. I started out telling recruiters a number at the top of that range. When I figured out I wasn’t getting call backs because I was too expensive, I backed down just a little and started experimenting using “competitive” in applications that would take non numeric entries.

During interviews I tried to push salary talk until I knew they wanted me. I only got the job I am in because they tried to go with the cheaper hire and it didn’t work out. The hiring manager argued for spending their budget and just doing it right and they called me back and made a competitive offer.

Same. I would add to investigate every possible permutation of your job title. It should get you pretty close in the ballpark. In my industry, it seems like companies mix up titles in anyway that they can to mix up people searching for salary ranges.

If I can offer some unsolicited advice as a former competitive rower (lol 2 short 4 college rowing though):

Technique is everything. When you’re coming forward, get the handles past your knees before you bring your knees up. A lot of people have to put the handle up and over their knees and not only is it super goofy looking, it’s bad technique and will hamper your row. This is the number one thing I see new rowers doing, but fortunately it’s pretty easy to break that habit with a little bit of mindfulness at first.

But congrats on getting that Concept 2! It is a great workout. I swore I would never get back on another one after spending way too much time on those infernal things in high school, but I actually liked doing it as part of my Orangetheory workouts (before COVID, at least.)

Yeah I treat rowing like death by a million deadlifts.

I don't have the knee strike problem that I did on the OTF water rowers, because I think the chain goes more directly ahead than being angled slightly downward.

But otherwise I try to keep my back flat and pull the last of the stroke with my shoulders pinched back. I been rowing while watching tv so I keep my head up more.

I'm sure there's a bunch of good technique videos on youtube (plus a few I've just watched from crossfit people that are a bit questionable) All I'll add is if you have the drag at 10 stick it right down to like 4, the computer can account for it and so all you're doing is making your stroke really short and choppy for no reason.

The thing with promotions and raises is a matter of being internally or externally billable. If you're internal only, you'll never be anything but a cost center. Paying you more money to do the same job beyond the stated inflation rate (which of course is under reality by a huge amount) is a short-term loss to them. Yes, you'll probably go elsewhere and cost them more money in the long term. But who cares? Just hire someone else, and lowball them too. What is knowledge translation? What is institutional knowledge? Sounds like a bunch of nonsense to me.

However, if you're externally billable then the math changes in your favor in exchange for being in the rat race. It allows you to invest in yourself in the form of credentials or experience breakpoints (0-2 years, 3-4 years, 5+ years for example) which increase your marketability. Increased marketability means they can bill you at a higher rate, and then kick a few crumbs down to you, because you're billed at anywhere from 1.5 to 3 times your salary. The downside, as mentioned, is that you're in the rat race. You have to constantly be improving your marketability or else you'll slam into a wall progression wise. This is also dependent on your negotiation ability.

I'll use myself as an example, and break that loving taboo of talking about white collar salaries. Keep in mind that I'm a consultant for a MIC company.

  • In September 2014 I was hired for 55,000 annually, which was over five times what I was making at the homeless shelter. It was under the market, but I didn't know that. The industry was still reeling from the sequester and the remnants of the GFC so I figured it was good enough. It was not, because they were shorting me by about 10k.
  • In December 2014 for my comp discussion I was told new hires don't get to request anything but CoL + Merit. I said I was hired under market and wanted an MSA - Market Salary Adjustment. I was fortunate in that I had leadership (that isn't involved in my comp) that pushed me. I got my annual changed to 64,000, or +16%.
  • In December 2015 I pushed hard on merit, and argued that with my degree and experience I was still under market. I didn't ask for an MSA (you literally have to say the words, in writing) but I got the maximum raise without getting more senior leadership involved, for a 10% raise to 70,400.
  • In December 2016 I did the same as the year before, and argued that I am now considered mid-level by labor category. I also didn't ask for an MSA, but again was given the maximum raise of 10% capable of being approved at this level, bumping me to 77k and some change.
  • In July 2017, I had pushed hard for a promotion to the next level and was granted it. This is a mid-cycle promotion where the rules are different. My payband changed, and with it my salary went up to approximately 92k - a roughly 19% jump.
  • In December 2017, I requested an MSA. Why did I do that, since I had just gotten a promotion? Because I got my PMP. I could be billed out as a project manager now. I also regained having a clearance. I used that for justification and was granted a ~14% bump to 105k. Officially a six figgie fucktard now and making nearly double what I started a few years ago.
  • In December 2018, I got (notice a trend) my maximum 10% raise. I was going to fight a lot harder for another MSA but I was on the bench for 3 months from September to December and had just started a new client. But I was being billed as a project manager now, like I had predicted the year before. Now making approximately 115k.
  • In July 2019, I pushed for another MSA. I had gotten my LSSBB certification and could now be billed as a "process improvement specialist" as a secondary and pointed out that getting paid 115k as a project manager was under market. It was granted, and I was bumped up to ~126k, or another 10% boost for the off-cycle.
  • In December 2019, I pushed again for maximum merit, arguing that I had generated new business (approximately 200k for a special project) and I deserved to be rewarded for it. Maximum merit granted, 10% boost to ~139k.
  • December 2020 comes around and I go for the jugular again. I demanded an MSA, saying that I was a senior project manager and process improvement specialist that had generated an additional 700k in revenue with more coming down the pipe in the near future. MSA granted, bumped to 162k - or another 16% boost.

I'm greatly summarizing this for the sake of space and time, but getting these bumps in salary is a phenomenal amount of effort. I'm working my rear end off, networking internally and externally, attending all sorts of "community" events and trainings, mentoring people, etc. On top of that I'm generating new business with my clients by pitching special projects or additional staff that requires funding. It's loving exhausting and even with my returns I'm still getting the shaft. I posted this to show folks how my industry handles it.

It gets especially lovely if you're not in an environment where this kind of knives-out comp cycle negotiation is expected. If you misjudge the situation or your own bargaining power, you'll get told to pound sand. If you're at the high end of your industry and there's no room for growth, you stall out. You have to basically be in a state of permanent momentum with room to grow.

This year I'm going for promotion, which I may or may not get. If I don't get it, then I'll push for a 10% boost again. I'm getting my Scrum Master certification this year, just to keep moving forward.

edit: I might have hosed my math up with rounding and poo poo, bite me. Point is I was making 55k to start and 162k now.

As a civvy I was always under the impression that tier 1 stuff was solved with “get some Motrin, get back to work”. But the specialists / clinical care was pretty good once you accept the fact that you’re unlikely to have the same doctor from visit to visit for continuity of care which sucks.

I figured that obviously could be the case, but the trailer made it seem like they were actually gonna go...somewhere with it, and then the first half is just...nothing really? Jesse looks fir money and exposition flashbacks on how he's planning to find the money, interlaced with callbacks and fanservice (which, honestly, is perfectly fine).

And now the second half is more of the same, but they're just entirely dropping the mask and going straight-up non sequitur fan service.

Did fans of the show do a massively successful change.org campaign entitled "TELL US JESSE IS GONNA BE FINE ALREADY"?
