Criterion tends to offer mono tracks on movies that were shot that way.

Most of the boutique labels do this I've noticed. It's probably a side effect of nerds being the only people who buy physical media anymore, especially the kind of esoteric poo poo Criterion/Arrow/Vinegar Syndrome etc. put out.

One thing I think is weird is that the Evil Dead blu-ray included the film in its original 1.33:1 aspect ratio which was the first time that was available since it was on very early DVD release but the only sound mix on there is 5.1. But that said if you've never seen it on blu-ray it looks fantastic.

Speaking of, I'm surprised the original Evil Dead never got a big release from one of the boutique labels. The blu-ray release is really barebones with just a commentary. I think early prints of it had a DVD with some bonus stuff, but who wants a DVD?

It’s still very easily available on all formats. The UHD is a nice looking disc despite the age and quality.

I'm kind of surprised there hasn't been an even newer release including the all-new score and sound design that was in theaters in 2019.

I had/have the Book of the Dead edition of the DVD, and I"m pretty sure it was 1.33:1, although It may have been 4:3, it's been forever since I watched that version.

It's one of those movies I always forget wasn't 16:9 until I start watching it and have a moment of temporary confusion.

I would guess it's a rights issue. While the Evil Dead movies were cult movies when we were growing up, and probably still count as them, they're some of the first movies for people who are just getting into cult movies, and the rights holders would definitely know that.

When the Evil Dead blu-ray first came out it had a DVD with it that has a whole ton of poo poo on it. Lots of stuff with the cast talking about the movie and Bruce Campbell being Bruce Campbell. Last I checked the copies with that disc were selling for high prices. I have that one and I've considered making a copy of the DVD and then just selling it.

1 looks good in 4K and it's also on sale a lot of the time (I think i snagged it for like $7 last year) and same with 2, but the improvements are a lot more noticeable (likewise, I remember getting that one sale for $10 and some point last year). They're both fairly cheap and are a good bump in quality. It's not a 2001/The Shining jump in visual fidelity, but its there and its good.

I have a feeling that ED1/2 always being in some form of print and being decent releases every time is probably why there's never any lamenting that they don't have a super deluxe boutique label edition. Not like it wouldn't be welcome on physical media's final form, but we're also not over here watching something that got a single non-anamorphic DVD release in 1998. I swear there was a new version of each of those movies every other week back in 2002.

Of course, it's not like I wouldn't dip again if Shout/Arrow/VinSyn/Severin released a deluxe 4K UHD set

oh yea if there were a trilogy pack done by a boutique label all being held in a box about the size of the tremors boxset that had the same textured feeling of the book of the dead. i'd buy it in a heart beat. i've owned at least 2-3 copies of each of those movies on various formats. I'll dip in again.

I think this was the last one where they went all-out with the whole Special Edition thing, including both the 4x3 and 16x9 versions. But it's still 90% bonus features from the 10,000 other editions that had already been released up to that point.

Yea because of how readily available the series has been over the years, I've never really had to spend a lot of money so I'd have no problem upgrading to a nice box set especially if they included the Showtime series.

You can get Evil Dead 1 and 2 UHDs for $15 or less these days, and the regular blu rays(which are still good quality) are even cheaper than that. It's hard for me to worry too much about double-dipping when I bought the original blu ray for like $8 almost a decade ago.

Really by now what's even left to say about the movie? If you're a person that's bought Evil Dead on multiple formats there's nothing they're going to put on any further releases that comes as some big revelation.

The one thing they could put on there that would be worth buying another copy is Within the Woods from some source that isn't a 95th generation VHS tape. I'm pretty sure Raimi has tried to do this at least once but there was a rights issue though I can't imagine why that would be the case with a 30+ year old student film the director himself made.

The sort of pop cultural legend around Ed Wood is probably more interesting than his actual work. The Tim Burton movie is probably the best option.

I can never remember, but I think last year it was ~$600 for the Horror/Exploitation only, and ~$800 to include the porn.

If you're interested, I'd say try out the half-way package in the upcoming sale, it'll be about half the cost, plus you get to use the discount code for preorders of the other stuff.

I honestly wish they would offer a first half of the year package on Black Friday, because that is an expensive time of year as is to spend that much money.

The 2021 subscription package was something like almost a grand for the completionist package and around $800 for the horror only.
