Welcome ghosts and ghouls to the most spiritual thread on SA, the Shaman King thread! After jesus what is it more than 15 years we're back! In Brotherhood form! That's right, this series is going to get the Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood treatment by Bridge. Original Shaman King had an anime only ending (and a surprisingly quality 4Kids dub), and this one will have the real ending from the manga.

PLOT
Shaman King takes place in a world where ghosts are 100% real, and only shaman can communicate with them. What is a shaman? Well, it's anyone that can connect with and/or manipulate a particular spirit or sets of spirits. This can be anything from being possessed by a ghost and letting them control your actions to controlling a reanimated corpse to do your bidding. In this world all spiritual traditions are 100% real. Shaman? Real. Necromancy? Real. Talking to ghosts via spirit box and having them scratch your back in groups of 3? Not in the series, but probably still exists

The plot is centered around the Shaman King, a mythical person who connects with the Great Spirit and is a major force for change in the world. It's been 500 years since the last Shaman King was crowned. Who will be the new one?

Characters
Yoh Asakura

Your average 13 year old kid. Destined to be the next Shaman King. Likes to chill. Really good at cheating on tests.

Amidamaru-

Legendary samurai, and Yoh's #1 ghost bro. Has an strong sense of honor. Does not understand the youth of today.

Morty "Manta" Oyamada

Small, scared brain boy. Can see ghosts. Yoh's best friend. His dad is an rear end in a top hat. Hates skeletons.

Anna Kyouyama

Yoh's fiance. Trained to be the greatest spirit medium in the world. Tired of your bullshit. Once crushed a tanooki's balls with her bare hands.

Conclusion
I'm super hype for this show. I never thought Shaman King got the respect it deserved for how great it was, even from the manga's editors. To me, this and One Piece are the premier shonen battle manga of the 2000s. I truly hope that this show inspires more love for the series and Hiroyuki Takei in general, considering how the editors hosed with him.

The show premiers April 1st in Japan and has been licensed by Netflix for international distribution.

Is the manga sequel still going on/any good?

Also considering this is going to be on Netflix/pretty long given the manga, I’m curious how this is going to be released (maybe in batches of like 12-13 episodes at a time or something).

As for the remake, the new Yoh sounds ok now that I’ve heard a bit more of her. I can’t tell though, does Horohoro have a new VA as well?

Kind of curious if we’re going to get a new dub for this as well (and if so, if any of the 4Kids actors would be able to reprise their roles)

Though if it’s going up on Netflix like has been said, we probably won’t see it until a little while after release (unless someone fansubs it that is)

On another note, is the manga sequel still going/any good?

While we wait, we have the opening and it's full of references to the original openings, that's very cute. It's also hyper spoilery, which is not an issue for most in this thread I imagine but will definitely be for anyone who hasn't seen the original series or read the manga. I don't think we should have the full team shown in the first episode!

Plus given the length of the manga this show is going to last a good while. As such, I’m not sure why they decided to shove nearly everything into the first OP.

Chicolove’s design looks far less racist at least.

It's just like the first op to fullmetal alchemist brotherhood. It shows you all the characters you know and love, even ones that won't show up for a while but nothing past the point where the manga divurges.

It's a pretty decent speedsub though. Some weirdly written/gramatically incorrect lines and one pretty obvious mistranslation (Amidamaru says he will run away, then says he can't run away - because the first line was him telling Mosuke he should run away) but overall quite readable. I'd still wait for official subs though.

The episode itself was fine. Animation was nothing special, though I imagine they're waiting for Ren's fight to properly show some cool cuts. Art was consistently pretty, and hopefully will remain on that level. The adaptation itself seems fine, I feared it may be rushed but honestly it may just be that the original anime was paced much slower and my brain's confusing anime and manga.

Though since apparently the show is going to be on Netflix and as far as I know they usually don’t put shows up one episode at a time (or without a dub option) it’ll probably be a while before we get anything official so this is better than nothing at least.

Also, how’s Yoh’s new VA? I assume Manta and Amidamaru are still played by the same people as the original?

I also hope they don’t rush through the beginning few arcs like FMA: Brotherhood did.

Out of curiosity, were Manta, Amidamaru, and Ryuu still played by the same actors from the first anime (I know Megumi Hayashibara will eventually be returning as Anna at least)?

Most of the cast uses their OG VA's, it's just like... maybe 2 or 3? of the main ensemble cast had changes. Just like how most of the Fate/Stay Night cast has not changed much in almost 15 years either aside from, like, 2 retired/dead voice actors.

And yeah, Yoko Hikasa (Yoh's new VA) is awesome. I think this is also like the first big role she has where she plays a boy?

It's from the manga, but it happened significantly later there. The anime's first episode shuffled a few things around, just as putting that at the beginning so the Hao plot is instantly set up, and moving Mosuke earlier to speed up Amidamaru joining Yoh.

From what I've seen, of the confirmed VAs, literally only Yoh's has changed. Everyone else is the original. There's clearly a lot of effort to keep the feel of the original anime here, which I appreciate.

Tossing a few elements from later chapters into the premiere was a neat choice as well. I just hope the first half of the series doesn’t wind up as rushed as FMA:Brotherhood was (which sometimes crammed a few of the early manga arcs into just an episode or two)

Definitely. There's a few chapters about Yoh's random life with ghosts before the Shaman King tournament proper starts and defines the series from there on. I imagine those will get dropped or heavily condensed in favour of getting to the main plot quickly.

In Brotherhood it was a weird decision but also I feel it worked because people wanted to move from what the 2003 anime had already covered from the manga ASAP. Also FMA had the advantage that it was never really gone gone for long. A little less than a year after the anime finished, Conqueror of Shamballa came out and then we got about 6 OVA's or something in 2006 and then Brotherhood got announced like a year and a half later to start airing in early 2009. For a lot of peeps that might feel like too long of a period of time, but that's a fairly fast timeline for a reboot/remake as far as anime is concerned. Also people (re)discovered the series with the dub that came about a year after the OG broadcast ended which was decent-to-good and, like, people still consistently recommend the shows/movies to this day.

True, Shaman King has had spin-off/sequel manga up the wazoo. but as far as anime-only watchers? Even if you only followed the dub, it's been over 15 years. So I don't think anybody is in a rush with Shaman King, least of all the studio.

Gonna keep it vague because this is dealing with post-main series content and we just got through Episode 1, but if you liked the main series, you'll like most of the spin-off/sequels Takei has put out.

There's like two or three chapters dealing with one-off ghost stuff before that guy at the end of the episode pops in, so I could see that being a montage or something.

Huh? What?

I've seen on other sites people complaining that rearranging the events of the first episode 'removes vital character development' (lol) but its literally ep 1, it wouldnt surprise me if we still get some of the early stuff as background gags or short bits while they set up the cast, its not like any of it really matters that much timeline wise either. I feel like having the first episode be this way is good for people not familiar with the source material, because it gives a really solid initial grasp on what the meat of the series is like.

As I recall, Shaman King doesn’t have much in the way of a major plot until the tournament starts (and maybe some stuff prior to that involving Ren’s family) so them switching some things around makes sense to me honestly.
