I was not able to get that salsa the other day, so for my first foray into Mountain biking I will be getting a Trek Marlin 6 because that is the only mountain bike in stock in my size that I have been able to find. It lacks a lot of the featurea everyone told me I need but hopefully its fun enough to tell me if I like mountain biking a lot or not, and then i can upgrade when the supply chain isnt wrecked from rona

you can actually inflate your scrote pretty safely with sterile saline, syringes, needles, and aseptic technique. its a niche kink iirc

the saline just slowly gets absorbed into your blood but in the meantime you got a big round smooth distended nutsack

that might be exactly what i'm looking for, if i don't just go for the ultimate cost savings and just ride an old bike and do without discs

especially because i don't particularly care for 1x. i kinda prefer either two derailleurs or none, but that may come from living most of my adult life in SF

I have a 2019 and love it as a do it all bike, been happy with it for everything from dirt jumps to shuttle days to long all day trail rides, a friend put xc tires on it and did a 100 mile race on his.

Bit of a master of none and I now have a dj and will probably buy a longer travel bike but still happy with it and love riding it.

Anyone interested in buying a Revelate Vole seatpack? I've only used it once and have since changed my setup and don't need it now. It was $150 new, looking for $100 + shipping.

It's also dropper compatible, which they no longer make.

I took my bike to the shop to get the seals and oil changed in the suspension parts, as well as a general tune-up. I talked myself into new tires, and after 10 days they were still waiting for the seals on order so I brought it home. I enjoyed yesterday's 2 hours on the trails so much, the new rubber was premature but I've got a baby due in August so I figured I might as well get it done while I can.

I can't see them speccing 26 when the normal range offers 650, which is 13mm bigger radius.

So I started with 0 fitness, found out I enjoy mountainbike riding and have been building up my fitness to hit some trails and not die.

I've been making a lot of good progress in most areas except out-of-saddle riding. Both of my kneecaps track poorly (and I'm an old man), which means that there is a certain range in my knees where I have very little strength and it causes pain to "push" through that.

I can stand on my pedals and coast, but when I go to pedal, there's a bit of pain\weakness pushing down from the top of the pedal. I figure I just need to ride more to strengthen those knees before that becomes more comfortable\feasible, HOWEVER:

Anybody got any advice for out-of-saddle riding for unfit people with bad knees?

Go see an orthopedic PT. My partner is one and I've heard her describe plenty of cases similar to yours where she's had good outcomes.

There's no easy fix for something like what you've got. Go let a doctor help you, it'll be the single best investment towards improving your riding. No doubt there are a few adjustments you could make to the bike, but the #1 improvement will come from fixing your body.

In terms of what you can do to help yourself immediately, I would say the first is that you should be pedaling faster in lower gears. You generally want to spin quickly with less effort per pedal stroke. Generally, it's best to avoid having to really crush through a pedal stroke unless necessary. Second, visit a bike shop and ask them to evaluate your fit if you haven't done that already. You can generally get a quick fit from a shop for a minimal fee and it could really help reduce your knee pain.

Take care of yourself and keep riding!

seconding both the "see ortho specialists" and "pedal faster in lower gears"

the theoretical ideal for where you put out power most efficiently is something like 90rpm. you don't have to strictly adhere to that because you're not riding in a peloton on a 100km race stage, just keep it in your mind that if you get noticeably below 60rpm (aka 1 complete revolution of the pedals per second) it's time to downshift a gear before you get stuck standing on the pedals

This good advice, except the theoretical ideal is a function of power output, up to around 120rpm.

Does anyone have any strong opinions on the REI Co-Op hardtails ala DRT2.1?

Or Giant Stance 29 2?

Wildly different price points, but I've read that sometimes its good to start on a hardtail and other times its good to just get a full suspension from the beginning???? I dont mind spending more money for a better quality product that can last me awhile as well.

If you live in Colorado, I would say there is value to being on a FS bike over a hardtail. There are others in thread who live in the area who might have different opinions. There are places around Boulder (Betasso, Marshall Mesa, etc.) where a hardtail would be fine, but there's lots of trails in the area that FS is just more comfortable to ride. On the other hand, in a place like Georgia (where I used to live), hardtails are great because there are lots of XC trails in the area. I moved to the area with a hardtail and bought a FS bike within a year.

Giant makes nice bikes, I've been very happy with mine. I can't see the price on the Stance, but it should be awesome in Colorado.

Jul 27, 2004

Imo the downside to a FS at that pricepoint compared to a hardtail at the same pricepoint is you are getting worse components on the FS to work the rear suspension into the budget. Whether that is worth it is really down to your preference and the type of trails you are dealing with. That Giant's price is pretty much as cheap as a FS bike gets. It looks like its level of drivetrain etc is pretty similar to that hard tail so the price really is for that rear shock.

You get tubeless ready rims on both which is nice.

The biggest oversight though imo is the hardtail has a dropper and the FS does not. I really really really wouldn't get any trail bike without a dropper unless you are immediately going to add one. Something like a a oneup etc is a great option without being crazy expensive. That Giant frame has internal routing by the look of it for the cable.

All things considered I'd recommend a hardtail with better components vs a FS with lesser components for a first MTB any day. Mechanicals suck, but also a hardtail will teach you to ride trails better and keep you from developing bad habits.

Apr 21, 2010

Getting a hardtail first will make you want to pony up for a better full-suspension too, so it's win-win for everything except your wallet

Something like the Trance X would be a great choice. It is a fair bit more however. Pandemic has messed up the used market in a lot of places but used bikes really can be a great way to go to get more for your money.

The Norco fluid are a solid entry level FS setup too https://www.norco.com/bikes/2021/mountain/trail/fluid-fs/fluid-fs-2/

The Marin Rift Zone 1 is weird in that it uses this QR to TA adapter. This means the frame itself is TA and if you decide to change wheelsets later on you can go with a normal boost rear. The Rift Zone 2 is better speced and if you can swing it is a good buy for the money.
