My older son got it for his birthday. It's called a "kickflipper" and it's like a carpet skateboard to help them learn pushing and kick turns. E: after watching my son use it all morning, he's really into those super deep Jay Adams carves and I just hope that's where the similarities stop. I bought a cheap Retrospec mini board on a whim. 33 years old and I’ve never touched a skateboard in my life- I probably look a bit silly but this poo poo is so much fun. After a few hours of riding, I feel pretty comfortable balancing on the board while moving, turning, and can do the tiniest manual. If I to turn too abruptly, the wheels touch the bottom of the board and I fall on my rear end (I think this is called wheel bite?) I tightened my trucks a but and it still happens if I push it too hard. Does avoiding wheel bite just come down to knowing the limits of your board?

You can put on riser pads to lift the deck. Or you can get a cruiser that’s set up a little better. I’m also learning for the first time at 36, been at it for a few months. I’ve tried to ride my neighbor kids little boards and they are terrifyingly unstable. I wholeheartedly endorse a wide cruiser like the Santa Cruz street cruiser - it’s nearly 9” wide, got a little bit longer wheelbase, and is very stable. I got mine complete from a local shop for $135 or so. I think it was UFOTacoMan in this thread who pushed me in that direction and it was the best advice. FWIW, I’ve never gotten wheelbite on that board, it’s got flared wheelwells and 1/8” risers. HenryJLittlefinger fucked around with this message at 01:10 on Apr 1, 2021 |

A little wheel bite is okay. Typically my decks get a groove where each wheel hits the deck for a deep turn. You can also use it to help with power slides since it will lock in more friction but there's a point where it fucks you.

Ideally you don't want to get wheel bite too easily but it's normal for it to happen if you lean way too far into something. as henry mentioned the only way to combat wheel bite without otherwise altering the setup is to add riser pads. then the board is further off the ground and slightly more work to push. skateboarding!

I got a wide deck with riser pads just because I'm old and my ankles suck but it's bizarre and I can't actually use it. I think if I just take the risers off it'll be okay but if you suddenly have an extra 1/4" added to the fulcrum of your pop it is gonna majorly gently caress with your ollie.

UFOTacoMan posted:"I love feelin' the trees" He's quite a character for sure. I saw Rodney Mullen in a video a few years ago and was also taken aback at his wonderfully weird kooky personality I'm the same age as him, so have watched him skate for maybe 35 years but have never heard him speak so it was quite a surprise. Anderson has some of the same skate style now that I think about it. Both are amazingly original tho. -e- Just remembered, it's Mullen's Ted talk. Rewatched it, he's great man. drat Mullen, haha I'd never noticed but now I can't un-see it. As for Barbee, he is so casual, even when at regular speed he looks so relaxed it's mesmerising. I wish I'd had some of that slick style when I skated. I was self taught during the first boom in the 70s and I taught myself to push mongo. When I picked it up again in the 80s I couldn't be arsed relearning. It looked pretty bad. It often confused people into thinking I was doing stuff switch/fakie or something, but nope, I was just a freak -edit- Here's a guy explaining it in case anyone doesn't know what it is. He looks way worse than I did though as he's not used to doing it. Also, what he's saying about foot poitioning isn't quite right. When you're done pushing, you can basically do a little jump into position as you stop pushing which is a fraction of a second at worse. That foot shuffling thing he's showing looks like a nightmare. Coincidentally, when I'm fighting I'm southpaw too. (I fight about as often as I skate nowadays though) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lqiXheenjD8 YerDa Zabam fucked around with this message at 13:22 on Apr 3, 2021 |

I’ve been having a lingering pain in the ball of my pushing foot, right where it takes the most pressure at the final thrust in each push. I’m working on smoothing out the push so it’s a nice heel to toe roll rather than slapping the ground with a flat foot, but is it possibly a shoe problem as wel? I’m wearing older New Balance 515s, so there’s a bit of drop and not a ton of cushion left. I.e., probably not great skate shoes.

I’m wearing older New Balance 515s, so there’s a bit of drop and not a ton of cushion left. I.e., probably not great skate shoes. I would probably get some legit skate shoes to replace the new balance. but pushing pain can come and go, sometimes you have to let your body take a breather and use the opportunity to start pushing switch with the other foot. I'm partial to the Vans Kyle Walker Pro shoes (not the new Kyle Walker Pro 2 with velcro). https://www.vans.com/shop/kyle-walker-pro also since I'm old and my feet hurt sometimes I like to take out the stock insoles and put in Footprint Insoles "Game Changers" that you heat up to fit your feet. These insoles are not as heavily padded as stock insoles. Sometimes I think having padding in the wrong places on the bottom of your shoes is worse than too little padding.

FP insoles are great and their shoes are good too.

I tossed an older pair of Dr Scholl’s insoles from my motorcycle boots in today just to see what more cushion does. They’ve got more in the heel plus the forefoot is kind of flattened, so I think these will just make it worse if anything. I do need some new insoles for my hiking boots anyway, so maybe I’ll get a couple pairs of FP. Thanks for the advice.
