We could either record a presentation or do it live, but somehow they just can't be hosed recording it by the deadline tonight so we're going to do a much shittier job live and have to spend time practicing it sheerly because they are too lazy to record literally two minutes and send it to me tonight. I'd do the whole presentation myself if I could but they have to read their slides on webcam. Its easy and the presentation is easy and short, but its just going to end up much shittier than it could have been. One member of the group has already left and one is completely incommunicado. Cursed group.

The major problem with group work at uni is that there are no consequences for the lazy, and heaping amounts of stress for the people who care.
The people who care either carry the lazy ones (because the markers never actually adjust marks or monitor how much is done by each member), or end up getting dragged down by them.

The reality is that the markers don't want to mark as many projects - and they dress it up as teaching you collaboration like in the workplace. But in the workplace, you're getting paid to put up with lazy coworker bullshit, and there is also the possibility of them getting fired. Also, you can leave and go to another job without so many lazy coworkers if it's really bad.
It's not like the workplace, at all.

I have/do use the stuff learned in my job though, but I think it depends on the job and the course. Unfortunately a lot of jobs that don't actually need degrees are demanding them or you won't even get an interview, and then people never use what they learned.

Please bitches. If nothing else I am a gentleman
I use what I learned in uni every day I reckon, in the sense that I am not a dumb oval office who reacts instantly to any kind of information. It had zero impact on my job prospects or jobs, if anything it made me suffer more by awakening me to the true possibilities of human life and creation.

I think university is important, but in reality it should be much harder to get into and much more difficult while you're there. Alongside this, there needs to be greater investment in vocational training colleges alongside the complete abolition of apprenticeships.

Group work totally sucks, it's impossible to mark correctly. Taking credit for others toil is a big part of working, though. It's like the whole strategy of middle management.

Unis have absolutely coined onto the grift that is foreign education, it's a v profitable market for them.

We were actually lucky at USQ, they basically incorporated a team marking thing so if some oval office didn't pull their weight your team weighting on their performance actually did gently caress them. We had two foreign students who failed a first year course more than once because they did gently caress all beyond plagiarism and we marked them the lowest possible mark. Blessed as hell when we had to pick up the slack of 25% of the group between the rest of us, and smashed them for it and they failed

Do you often sing or whistle just for fun?
I did a postgrad that was entirely online and every single loving course had a group project in it. Oh, and this particular degree was open to international enrolments as well so not only did you have to contend with interstate time differences you also had to plan around group members being in international time zones. Super fun!

I mean it's not quite a grift but more that the federal government doesn't want to put money into tertiary education so those institutions are forced to seek out other ways to fund themselves. If we went back to when uni was free (i.e. the government pays for your degree) both students and unis would be better off.

I am glad I didn't have to pay for my degree upfront but HECS is an awful compromise because not everyone immediately falls into a high pay job right off the bat, which screws over the unis because that loan is either paid back slowly or not at all.

Lol, high paying job. Have you seen the thresholds for compulsory repayments lately? It's like 45K
I don't think the unis carry the loans - they get paid in full by the commonwealth immediately I'm pretty sure, and then the debt is repaid through your wages/tax return.

I also notice they re-introduced the 10% discount for upfront payments this semester under the guise of covid relief. Which, great for me, but it's just another example of the higher expenses of being poor.

How many Astartes do you know that roll like this?
The repayment threshold for HELP debt is now $46,620. The loans sit with the commonwealth and are collected through the ATO. It was $51,957 before 2020.

Also previously only FEE-HELP debt (broadly speaking post grad and vocational) had a limit but now all HELP debt (Inc HECS-HELP which is broadly speaking undergrad) has a limit of $106,319. Only HECS-HELP debt accrued from 2020 onwards counts towards this limit but only rich kids have pathways through certsin courses now without copping upfront fee payments by default, such as doing an undergrad degree then a Juris Doctor + Professional Practice to become a lawyer. (Some unis don't offer Bachelor of Laws and you can often become a Lawyer faster by doing an undergrad + JD)

And there was a fee hike for Commonwealth Supported Arts degrees which brings them in line with Law which is stupid because Law costs way more to deliver.

Source: I worked fees at a uni.

gently caress I don't know why I made that assumption, disregard that point in my post. The threshold being lowered is hosed but I think they can only take so much from your tax return based on my past couple of years (I make gently caress all). I am sure they will find a way to bludgeon the poor rather than taxing large corporations in due time.

Yeah, it's a percentage of your income, increasing as you go up into higher thresholds.
They're lowering the threshold rather than considering that maybe a system that requires paid tertiary education to get a job with below average wages is completely hosed up.

Also, there's also the "only a little percentage" medicare levy for people earning below-average wages which was slapped on and then increased not that long ago. Not the surcharge for people making above average income, I don't think that's ever increased. But they tried to increase the levy again a couple of years ago so that people earning below average wages pay. Oh, and no increase to the tax-free threshold.

With the above-inflation increases for just about every bill out there, it's death by a thousand cuts so that those at the top can call people whingers for "small" increases in every cost or new "small" levy or percentages you need to pay.

I provided proof, was told that them not doing the work wasn't adequate (as in, I needed to fix the issue), so I dropped the class, but had a friend still in it keeping me updated. Come end of year they had produced nothing, he gave them an extension, they produced nothing, and he literally had them coming in to hand-hold them through the project and then pass them.

A friend of mine has done this multiple times. The properties have been vacant because there are plans for future development but he's been able to live in them long term. His current residence is a former post office with a large house attached. It's on a large block of land and the intention was for it to be pulled down and greenhouses built on the property but that was years ago and there's been no progress on that plan.

Just really basic bitch bar work and tbh I need to keep looking because I know I can't keep doing that much longer but it feels good after getting frustrated with the byzantine labyrinthe of jobseeker poo poo to just get offered 20+ from the first place I reached out to. I too am brushing up my resume as the It manager here has gone rampant and is now taking away WFH fridays and any cool toys we had because he told my manager to hurry up and delete 50+ distribution lists instead of letting me check each one for activity, specifically customer-facing use, and it has so far cost the company about 500k but its our fault for not checking each of the email addresses fast enough.

its also undone about 2 years worth of goodwill that we earned and were using to say 'hey, we arent doing sprawling distribution lists for you idiots any more, because its impossible to maintain every single list for a user who wants to email 3 people at once because they hunt-and-peck type like loving children and dont understand what a distribution list is for or that theres better means of communication for the type of communication they need to do and refuse to learn'
