Bors quitting is probably a good thing. Between the inability to move on from the Trump-era wasteland comics and the NFT fiasco, it was pretty clear he wasn't doing his best or most enlightened work. I can only respect the decision to move on from a project instead of just putting out vapid, dispassionate swill day after day or week after week like so so many other cartoonists political or otherwise do.

An insane mind posted:NFT Fiasco? I'm not sure I'd call it a "fiasco", but Bors decided to NFT his "Mr. Gotcha" comic, announced it, and was immediately inundated with "what the poo poo, I thought you cared about the environment", and it became clear he'd done no research into what actually goes into NFTs and Bitcoin in general. He withdrew it but not before getting dragged pretty hard on social media.

On the other hand, "build and maintain a merchandising empire" was, if not Garfield's original reason, that's certainly the reason now, and it certainly does that.

Can't say I'm surprised he's getting out.

There's way too many political cartoonists that description fits, tbh Good for Bors for actually getting out of it instead of continuing to wallow in it for 30 years like some/most in the industry have. Something like this: Bors posted:I’ve drawn political cartoons every week since I was 19 and feel like I have said everything I can say, often a few times over. is more self-awareness than most of the other people posted in this thread could ever hope to have. It really was Garfield's original reason. Prior to Garfield, Jim Davis had toiled away on strip about anthropomorphic insects for a few years without distribution going beyond low double digits at best. He was dispirited when, some editor gave him the advise, "your art is good and your jokes are funny, but no one likes bugs." Jim then resolved to create the most commercial strip he could, and every design decisions was made from that framework. Literally the only reason it's about a cat is he noted that there were a number of popular dogs in comics like Snoopy and Maramaduke, but no cats. I don't like Garfield, but I admire it's purity. The perfect commercial vehicle, it's market calculations matched only by its ubiquity.

The criticism for Biden coming from the right is entirely bad faith bullshit and slander. I think criticizing Biden is good, but the criticism coming from the right should be disregarded entirely until they show an actual intrest in governing and not just remaining in power through obstruction and racism. This isn't meant as a shot at you (and I'm not sure if it come off as one? I dunno, I've had a long day and sometimes it's hard to judge how my tone is coming across in text) it's just that I'm not sure it actually is possible to criticize Biden from the right simply because the American right doesn't actually have any concrete goals beyond voter suppression at this point.

Space Cadet Omoly posted:the American right doesn't actually have any concrete goals beyond voter suppression at this point. Oh they absolutely do. Kill all foreigners that American capitalism can't enslave, eradicate the minimum wage, break the unions, eliminate the nonwhite population. Their concrete goal is a totalitarian "Christian" ethnostate united under a single white man and all of their other moves are actively pushing toward that goal. That's why folks on the left who recognise what's happening are often upset with Democrats.
