Actually reminds me that the opening premise of Extreme Ghostbusters (a show way better than it sounds, it's by the Men In Black cartoon people) was that they'd disbanded because they'd simply run out of malevolent ghosts to bust, until some tunnel project opens some ancient evil full of ghost stuff.

That is quite likely the premise of the movie, or at least part of the backstory.

Ghostbusters Afterlife has a rating now: https://www.cbr.com/ghostbusters-afterlife-rating-pg-13/

This means the movie is real and exists, unless I am hallucinating all this. Which, hey, maybe?

It’s Bill Murray so take it with a grain of salt since it’s very possible he’s just loving with everyone, but this interview sure makes it sound like Venkman does some honest to goodness ghostbusting in the new movie:

When in doubt, err on the side of Awesome!

In the last one it looked like 100% of his screen time was him sitting on a chair in front of a green screen so that would be one hell of a turn around.

It’s clearly Walmart, and there’s lots of Baskin Robbins on show, which I feel is also an Ant-Man reference.

Gozer is forever tied to Stay Puft Marshmallows in our dimension due to the choice Ray made on the roof of Dana's apartment.

It's natural that released spirit energy harnessed by Gozer worshipers would seek out a vessel in the image of their master.

I have mixed feelings, and will reserve judgement until I actually see the movie. I'm ok with scenes of tiny menacing creatures going around, I just want it to have an in-universe reason for it to make sense. If its just "hey remember staypuff" I'll be upset, but if its like "hey, some part of Gozer is still around looking for trouble and this was the chosen form so thats what it has to be" I'm more ok with it.

I noticed that too. Seems wrong when it’s not matched with that super grainy film look of the first movie.

Merci, chaton!
Weird editing; the guy walks away without looking back as something quietly happens behind him, then pop - he darts back into frame in a different shot as if he was right there. Feels like they cut a reaction shot of him looking back (or just forgot to film one).

And while animated marshmallows acting like gremlins is amusing in a sensible chuckle kind of way, going straight for "Hey, you remember this thing from the first movie? Here it is again!" doesn't fill me with confidence.

As far as the music goes, keep in mind its probably not the music that will actually be in the scene. Trailer cuts, especially for sequels, usually just grab something thematically appropriate to the IP and paste it over whatever is on screen.

I think the fact that a scene like that is in the movie is less worrying than the fact that they chose it as one of the first snippets to release to the public. It means that either it's the best they've got, which is a problem, or they think they have to sell the movie with nostalgia, which is also a red flag.

If they had a great movie in the can and they were confident of it, I don't think they release that clip.

I read a spoiler that actually involves these tiny little marshmallow guys, which was written well before this came out.

Also, wait.... IS this actually from the movie?? Or is it kind of like some weird faux commercial? I guess there's no product announcement or normal commercial ending, but it doesn't seem like a movie clip. Or am I alone in thinking that?

Edit: ok, I rewatched it and yeah, definitely not a weird commercial, very obviously not.

That's kind of where I'm sitting on this. Beyond some strange writing decisions right off the bat (what kind of a name is Mr. Grooberson? That sounds like it comes out of a porn parody), I've never been particularly excited by the concept of Afterlife in the first place--how many good comedy sequels are there, and how many good comedy sequels come out 37 years after the original?--and for this to be the first official footage released in about a year and a half is just ... woof.

Apparently that specific scene was supposed to be more elaborate, but was cut down to the montage.

Also, the old guy right next to that woman is the same old guy who played Santa Claus in Ernest Saves Christmas :eng101:

Is there anywhere where I can read or learn about the original story of GB2 and what Bill Murray had originally signed on for? It wasn't the faeries story, was it?

I'd heard about this years ago, and it's apparently not too easy to find it, since all the nerd sites just found out about it, too, thanks to the recent interview with him.

There was plenty to like about GB2016 (although the cringe-worthy cameos from the original cast, Ernie Hudson aside, were not among them).

I'd be stunned, however, if Coke didn't jump all over that nostalgia wagon again for Ecto Cooler. poo poo, they brought back the Hi-C orange drink at McDonald's a few months ago.

Rupert Buttermilk posted:

There's an early draft floating around that's pretty terrible; it has elements of what became GB2, but Dana has been replaced by someone named Lane (this was when Sigourney Weaver was refusing to take part in the movie), and there's some weird poo poo about eastern European immigrants and whatnot. It's been years since I've read it, but it was really, really lovely.

Murray signed on because A) they gave him all the money in the world and B) Michael Ovitz negotiated the "Columbia can never make a Ghostbusters 3 unless Reitman, Ramis, Murray and Aykroyd all give their OK" clause into his contract.

It does seem like the editing pace is massively sped up for that short clip with the different moments/gags all arriving and collapsing together with no time to breathe. That probably contributes to the feeling of it being an advertisement alongside the cuteness etc, the finished film will probably be paced better. Overall it doesn't dent my excitement too much because there's an inevitability to them leaning on the stuff people recognize in the marketing.
