It’s still baffling that they didn’t directly adapt The Lost World. The original book had a chameleon T-Rex for gods sake.

Probably wouldn’t have been a massive failure.

i think crispin glover also wanted more money for the sequels, and when they refused, he bailed, which is totally fair. although it is funny given that his apparent complaint with the politics of the first movie was that marty is rewarded at the end by a bunch of materialistic crap; according to glover, true happiness shouldn't come from money, lol

anyways, the ending of back to the future 1 is obviously a little crass and consumerist, but i feel like it's not really that bad. marty's dad is loaded, sure, but he also gets to achieve his dream of being a scifi author and embrace his creative side. and the rest of the movie isn't (obviously) full of pro-capitalist messaging.

i honestly couldn't tell you what the politics of back to the future 2 are. ummm, it's at least a little bit racist towards japanese people? it has a very naive view of the sports betting world?

back to the future 3 is about as apolitical as a wild west movie can get. there's a pretty stereotypical scene of plains indians charging across the desert in the beginning. mainly the movie is about why you shouldn't get too worked up about people calling you chicken

It's not just the truck, the whole family are now sleazy yuppies, whereas before they were poor schmucks. Before they were shameful losers, but hooray now they are happy and successful! McFly's dream is a terrible looking fan fiction mash up. Of course this is all just Marty's dream, so it's not impossible to read it from a satirical angle.

Glover's hapless pervy nerd is a highlight of the first film and a big part of its massive success - he was totally reasonable to demand a raise for his work, as well as free to criticize the logic of the franchise.

It's been a long time since I saw the 3rd, but there's no way a fantastic Western setting is apolitical lol

to be clear, i certainly don't begrudge crispin glover for asking for more money. as best i can tell from wikipedia, he initially asked for more money, then when they turned him down, he started saying in interviews that he was morally opposed to the ending of the first movie and that's why he refused to act in the sequels. both of those things can be true, but there's also perhaps a little motivated reasoning there

when they recast him for back to the future 2, they still had the molds of crispin glover's face from bttf1 that they used to make the old man makeup. so they simply used those molds to make young man makeup and stuck them onto the new actor

yikes

For the record I'm not saying ppl can't enjoy the bttf franchise or even other stories with rightist messaging (I'm a huge Tolkien nerd for example) I only pointed out bttf as problematic as a reason why someone might drop it from that list

Harry Potter and MCU are way worse imo, not just politically but just from a pure craft perspective; just awful stuff

just watched hellraiser 2 and liked it a lot are any of the other eight (lol) movies in the hellraiser franchise worth watching ive heard theyre all really bad

I have extremely strong opinions on the Hellraisers due to a binge at the start of quarantine

3: There's some fun cenobite stuff going on, especially in the third act, but the moving parts of the film are all boring - the greatest crime of any movie
4: Cool historical vignette early on in the movie and some laughable Hellraiser In Space but 2/3rds of the movie is really low budget and constrained and dull
5: A procedural serial killer film with some supernatural elements, better than expected but the effects are bleh and there's barely any actual cenobit econtent
6: This one's hard to get through, no redeeming qualities, lovely protagonist, lovely story, no good meathooking, just nothing
7: Interesting take on a Flatliners kind of story in the Hellraiser universe, the ending is anticlimatic and cheesy but there's a few scenes that really stuck with me
8: Holy poo poo bad, remarkably bad, talk about it years later bad, bottom shelf direct to video bad, kind of made me angry while watching it
9: They dug a hole beneath the bottom shelf, you would not believe this hole - ironically, 9 is the closest in story to the first 2 Hellraisers, but the acting and dialogue physically hurt in a unique way
10: Third favorite Hellraiser film - opens with a cool vignette about cenobite bureaucracy which then transitions into a 70ish minute supernatural Se7en knockoff

In conclusion, Hellraiser is a land of contrasts, thank you
