Seems pretty meh for both sides. Wallmark did nothing for the Hawks. I think Carlsson can be a decent player as he gets more experienced, but they seemed to favor several other young defensemen over him. Borgstrom follows Bowman's recent predilection for first-round reclamation projects (Dylan Strome, Alex Nylander). I guess the Hawks view him as the "sweetener" instead of a higher draft pick?

He was really hyped when he came up at the end of 2018, but only put up 19 points in 58 games on the NHL level, and looked like he regressed his last year in the AHL before going back to Europe. This move is mainly to free up cap space for the Panthers. Funny how often the Cats have traded with the Blackhawks, even after Tallon has left.

Because, unless they sign Ullmark in the off-season, they would be looking for two good goalies this summer. They wouldn’t be able to go back into total rebuild mode while keeping Eichel. They should try to keep Eichel. Now that they have legitimate Center depth they can build on that, a d-core (McCabe/Jokiharju/Dahlin/Borgen/Bryson) that will be decent once healthy, and their one good goalie. Trading Ullmark would be a huge mistake.

So, we're looking at 2024 now for the bad contracts to be over. Assuming Benning isn't extended after 2022-2023 he probably won't be able to sign any more anchors past 2026 at the latest. In 2027 Petey, Hughes and Boeser will be 29-30, just past their primes. So that's our contention window. If we're lucky we can tank the '22 and '23 seasons and maybe draft a couple of core pieces too.
