Horizon Zero Dawn's merchant system has a weird design decision: when selling off resources you can click on an item and use a slider to select anywhere from 1 to however many of that item an inventory slot holds. But you can't do that when you're buying resources - if you have so much money that you want to stock up enough of something to never scavenge again, you have to just sit there holding the "buy" button while the counter increases.

I feel like the end of the fourth mission in Hitman 3 after you destroy the server drags it down. Until then, it's a huge sprawling map with a few really cool points of interest and lots to do, then suddenly you get boxed in by a heavily-armed security force that's hostile to (afaik) every disguise. Plot-wise, it makes perfect sense, but in-game it resulted in me hiding like a rat and scoping the situation out for longer than I would care to admit before slowwwwwwwwwwwly, cautiously, and most importantly tediously closing the level out.

Again, it's thematically fine and makes sense in context, and it's a really nice contrast to the end of mission 3 where after you kill five agents out of several who have infiltrated a nightclub to assassinate you, they realize how outclassed they are, turn tail and run. But that ending is fun and funny, and mission 4's is....just the absolute antithesis of fun. I feel like if I would have gone the other way and absolutely hauled rear end it would have been a lot less painful, but even then it's iffy. Mission 3 is probably the best in the entire series (that I've seen so far, at least) which makes 4 stand out more in contrast.

Fortunately it's something you can skip on future playthroughs by choosing a different starting location. Same goes for some of the other cinematic story stuff in 3 like the intro to Dubai and Berlin.

All that most maddens and torments; all that stirs up the lees of things; all truth with malice in it; all that cracks the sinews and cakes the brain; all the subtle demonisms of life and thought; all evil were visibly personified, and made practically assailable in Fry.
Disco Elysium has such good, thoughtful writing. I'm so curious about how the reveal of the terrible sad thing that broke the main character's brain will subvert the awful old cliche of it being something like that his wife left him.

It doesn't. It's that his wife left him, and it is played completely straight.

If it was a bad game it wouldn't have been such a bitter disappointment, but everything else is so good that I let myself get my hopes up. I'm surprised it's not more commonly brought up as the game's low point (unless it has been and I just haven't been keeping up with the thread, in which case disregard this message).

I also got the last day with Cuuno as my partner, so I didn't even get the dream sequence, so it was such an anticlimax I just laughed my rear end off at that reveal.

Also the reveal that Harry's actually a really good detective, law enforcement in Revachol is just poo poo.

They weren't married and she left years ago. It wasn't some instant brain-breaking event that immediately led to the game's events, it was a slow burn-out that IIRC is also implied to have contributed to her leaving.

Just finished playing the PS2 Stealth game Stolen. It was overall a fun game with some amusing challenges, but one room right near the end is just unfun. You have to do this really slow mechanic cutting holes in metal three times, and each time you have to keep breaking away from it to duck into the shadows to avoid guards who have complex patrol routes all over the room. Also sometimes guards can hear the cutting tool so just because they aren't looking is no guarantee. There are a few rooms that I just had to brute force and flee through until I got to a checkpoint and was able to lay down a save (when you load the save the alarms all stop and the guards are placed in specific parts of their route to allow you to continue without a problem, so there's not load the game and immediately get spotted)

Outriders is overall a decently competent looter shooter, but it does tend to really fall apart whenever it puts you up against nonhuman enemies. At the beginning of the game I picked the "Trickster" class, which is built around giving you extra mobility and making you extra deadly at short range. And against regular human enemies, that works just fine. You can use your mobility and the terrain to your advantage to split up enemy groups and then quickly pick them apart at short range. It's fun and effective.

However, it's very much not effective when you're up against a boss that's just a stationary blob of HP that you physically cannot get close to. Doubly so when the skilltree encourages you to use short-to-medium ranged weapons like shotguns and assault rifles so you're stuck plinking away for minimum damage because the boss is outside their effective damage range. Othernon-human enemies have a similar problem, in that you can't/shouldn't close in on them because they have poorly telegraphed wide-ranging melee attacks that will constantly interrupt or even stunlock you. And since you often fight those in areas with minimal cover you can't really outmaneuver them either, so in practice my class simply isn't really working in those situations.

Now, to the game's credit it's quite easy to quickly dial the difficulty up and down on the fly, so if nothing else you can just put it down to minimum and breeze through those areas killing everything in one shot. But it's still pretty annoying and really messes with the overall flow of the game.

I've seen a lot of bad crafting mechanics in games, but overall D:OS might actually be the worst.

Theres some funny stuff in the D:OS crafting system (the recipe for mashed potatoes is a potato and a hammer) but it's absolutely awful and not worth engaging with beyond elemental arrows if you're a ranger.

I would have preferred it if (Disco Elysium spoilers) Harry got into his current state all by himself. Maybe the depression he saw about him or whatever else, but any kind of specific person trigger feels like it's a bad idea for this kind of game. If he had been beaten by his father or betrayed by his best friend or suffered during the war or whatever then it would be the same to me. The only things I really know, that I really interact deeply with as a player are Harry, his job, and the setting (and Kim but he can't be responsible). So it would feel best to me if his crazy behavior was derived from one of these 2 things. If I decide Harry is lost to depression then I have to do it based on a relationship I never experienced with a woman I never met, and that's just not satisfying to me. Make it about life, the setting, or his job, something I can interact with in the game and come to feel something about myself.

I'm pretty sure the connotation throughout the game is that Harry is the way he is precisely because he got there all by himself, or almost by himself. His girlfriend leaving him is the consequence of that, not the sole reason. Substance abuse has started before she left, iirc. I'd say the material conditions imposed on him by the setting were much more of a factor, tbh

Yeah that's true about all the other stuff having an effect. And I think it made the whole thing better than it would have been if it wasn't the case. I guess the thing I mostly object to was the section at the end where you dream about her. It felt like it put a bit too much emphasis on her and I wasn't really feeling it during that whole bit. Looking back through the rest of the game though you guys are right that the game shows there's more to it than the relationship. Just had that one section looming in my mind when I was thinking about it.
