Got my vax! Volunteered at the local superstation, which is on a college campus that was specifically sited to be in a wealthy suburb far from the population centers and inaccessible by public transport. Had been a downtown location where pretty much every transit and busline converged, and close to lots of population including low income neighborhoods. But they were using a ballfield's parking lot and the 4th most popular US sport needs it more. Sigh, </rant>. Anyway, to the whole don't screen-fry your brain kiddo, discussion, I'll add that I was an observer, where you watch a room full of people silently stare at their phones and count down 15 minutes before they can bug out, NONE of whom want to be bothered by a volunteer 'just checking in'. So it's 4 hours of standing in a room, watching people sit, making perfunctory "hi how are ya? Want some water? Crackers? Nope well change your mind, just ask! Heard about the tracking app?" To people varying from awkwardly polite to restrainedly hostile until you give up out of embarrassment and a sense of your own uselessness. Except, of course, you can't look at your phone cause the whole point is to be an observer. I feel like I used to know how to be bored, I really did, but holy Christ, I haven't watched a clock so hard, that moved so slow, since maybe 5th Grade. So here's my moral dilemma: 1. Basically it's common knowledge that in my area the vax given out isn't tracking with appointments, which means there's always vax for volunteers which means there's huge demand for volunteer slots. I personally applied for like 6 shifts three weeks in advance and got 2. 2. I feel like having got something so valuable for so little, I owe it to them to kick in a little more volunteer time 3. I can't stress how completely useless the volunteering I actually did felt. 4. I don't think that having done it once, I will bring any valuable experience to my shift of standing around in a room full of folks in folding chairs, all trying not to make eye contact with anyone, and immediately calling an adult if anyone actually does require aid, that a new boot wouldn't get the hang of in ten minutes time. 5. If I dip on my remaining shift, that will open up a slot for someone who desperately wants it, will not appreciably affect the vax program, and put a shot in the arm of someone else who otherwise wouldn't get it. I've heard takes on both sides and my brain leans towards bail on the 2nd shift but my catholic guilt and protestant work ethic say show up and pay for what you were given. Work or bail, WHO YA GOT.

One of the benefits of living in red/MAGA territory is that they are all too stupid/paranoid to want to get vaxxed, so many of the time slots end up not being filled. My demographic just opened last week, signed up this morning and there are a good 200+ slots for this Thursday and Friday that are not filled, will not be filled. I get my first phizer this Thursday. Hurray!

It's such a frigging load off, even though I'm not going to be doing much differently besides single masking (I got a stack of N95s and N100s from McMaster Carr back when everyone was buying out Amazon. Folks forget it's not just doctors who work in places with bad bad air. Giving them away to the local mutual aid once dose 1 kicks in). But I can finally, like, shop at the grocery store and not worry about the idiot standing directly behind me is going to kill me and my family, so that's a benefit I'd never thought I'd be counting as a blessing! Yea, I live in a Red area in a blue state, so between the ex-military chuds and the antivaxxer libs, there's tons of slack. There's also a 50% under-representation among hispanic people in terms of percentage vaxxed. I think it's like 20% of the vaxxed, 40% of the population. They're going to open to everyone soon and it's going to be an absolute clusterfuck because the demographics mean that anyone 60 and older came up in what used to be a hard-red outpost and anyone young is at least a liberal. So instead of being available to 20% of the population, of which, easily 60%+ is conservative (and the other 40% is probably too poor to easily get the 30 miles to the site) they're going to open it to 80% of the population, 100% of whom want it *yesterday*.

crossposting from the pinball thread, since i get dose two next week and things finally look like they may end some day: i've almost finished my quarantine project F-14. just need to touch up the black paint. in total, I ended up: rebuilding all 4 flippers replacing the switch on the Yakov kicker replacing the left center pocket coil bracket- it took about a month to hunt the part down when i could have just replaced the whole coil for $14 replacing the left center pocket retaining gate wire replacing all the incandescent bulbs with LEDs sending the boards to Missouri for a $300 repair/bulletproofing including installing NVRAM replacing all the plastics and star posts with NOS replacing all the rubbers replacing the Yagov, light lock and spinner stickers fixing a damaged piece of playfield wood on the right outlane replacing the rollthrough sensor on the left side lock habitrail soldering a standup target and an LED back in to place repairing the pulley system that drives the gumballs on the topper generally unfucking lots of "field repairs" including stripped screw holes that'd been patched with toothpicks tightening/locking down all the posts on what has been a very hard routed machine- now it gets to relax as a HUO dipped the legs in CLR and scrubbed them to new and if some of you recall, when i brought the machine home, it looked like this on the left side (i think the best comment posted here was 'did that thing fall off a truck and slide a hundred yards on its side?': and now, eleven months and a corona-timed landlord ending our lease later, i'll be bringing it inside probably Friday, depends on how fast the black gets touched up (wife volunteered, i'm trying not to be pushy): it was fun, and a good reason to get off my computer during corona, but i don't want to buy a machine that needs this much work again. i feel like i learned a lot and could diagnose nearly anything now. the worst, most tedious and nerve-wracking part was by far doing the paint. just pay someone the $900 to redo your cab for you, trust me oh, and drilling out the rivets on the old plastics to get access to the parts that needed to be re used. that also was an utter bitch getting my second shot a week from saturday. gonna go ref a bunch of soccer games boar guy fucked around with this message at 17:54 on Apr 7, 2021 |

^^^ Looks good. I've been tuggin' Got a pork shoulder yesterday that I'm going to make maybe tomorrow. First time ever. I'm excited! I'm just going to do the classic slow cooker, shred, add BBQ sauce, place on bun, shove into mouth hole. I wanna take it easy at first. Just got my second shot! So far not even pain at the site. I think I had a little pain after maybe an hour or so for the first one. That was my only symptom. Minor pain for maybe 12 hours. The nurse of course said most people get sick after the second shot but I'm not too worried about it. It's worth it.

Maybe fully this time. I got a 6.57lb pork shoulder for $8.42 so I'm pleased with this purchase. edit: there's a huge fat cap on it. Do I cut that off or will it melt into it, which I'm guessing? Hmm... never had them before. I've had pork rinds before from a bag once. Is that the same? They weren't bad at all. I should get some more sometime. Also probably too lazy to cook that. I cut part of the fat cap off because I don't want to dig around in there when it's all cooked. But there is a ton of fat on this thing.

I will not share anything because I like anonymity here, but I am building a recording studio on my kitchen because of an EU project. I was going to record a number of lectures with my women colleagues in Polimi (Milan U of Tech), but because of COVID-19 nothing can be done on actual recording studios on any campuses. However, the EU admistration told that COVID-19 is no reason to postpone the production so I am currently making my kitchen (which has lime-green wall) into a studio, so that I can get things rolling.
