Sorry to come in here and lay down some harsh truth but this was actually the best set ever. Small enough to sneak into church, lots of small pieces for cool details like rockets and "guns", had a conversion feature so it could walk around like a mech and switch into a flying mode for MAXIMUM SWOOSH.

For the 911 I built the Targa. It's the classic version and I felt it just looked a little smoother. The turbo has the plain white top and looks a bit more janky, to me.

For the 911, I kind of want to make the Turbo because I have the speed champions one, and that'd be fun to display next to each other, and I also think I like the look of the back wheel arches more - but the Targa seems neat too, and I didn't realize it came with the black convertible top. I was tempted to build one, then covert it to the other so I can at least see how both builds go, but it looks like there might be some less-then-obvious bits that would make it a touch harder to revert back to the base? (I could probably just go through the instructions in reverse.)

Favourite set? Tough question. I think it’s gotta be the Black Seas Barracuda. I had the shuttle transporter set and both the 747 and the shuttle are only four studs wide even though they’re both enormous irl

I get the nostalgia angle, but I'm surprised there isn't more love for more modern sets. As much as I loved my Indy Transport as a kid, it doesn't come close to overtaking something like Ninjago City or Old Fishing Store for me, personally!

All the sets from the past 15 years are objectively better than anything that happened before, but you can't compete with nostalgia. Feel bad for the kids of today who get into their 30's and their nostalgia sets are millenium falcons or green grocers.

I must've taken this thing apart and put it back together fifty times when I was little. All the other sets I had were castles or spaceships or whatever so somewhat ironically the mundane real world setting of this one was an incredibly exciting novelty. It's kind of funny looking at this set for the first time since I was seven years old and comparing what I remember it looking like (absolutely gigantic set with a piece count and complexity easily rivaling any modern modular set) to what it actually was, but even little-kid goggles aside the set still kinda rules. Multi story building with a jail and a little bridge over the parking gate, a car AND a bike AND a truck AND a freakin HELICOPTER, just so much stuff to play with. mentholmoose posted:I think I still have that Black Seas Barracuda mostly assembled at my parents house. I never had any of the big police stations, fire departments, airports, seaports, etc. But it's fine. Even the smaller sets had a lot of play value. I wouldn't go back to the format and level of detail those sets had because I'm so spoiled by modern parts and techniques, but there's a lot to be said for getting a $30 set that has, like, a building and 3 vehicles. I have a photo of me at my 4th birthday party holding a little Futuron set, and I think it may be this, but I'm not entirely sure. To join the conversation, the Alienator was my favourite overall. The colour scheme and the swivel movement was awesome. This is a sentimental favourite though. This is the last set my grandfather bought me, a week or two before he passed away suddenly. The memory of shopping for it at the department store (Myer) is something I'll always cherish. My dad and I took him shopping for a new suit for a wedding, and I got a chance to look in the toy department. He surprised me by telling me to pick whatever I wanted. The irony was he ended up wearing that suit at his funeral. I kept the set intact for almost a decade afterwards, until I was an adult and needed room. I got a bit misty eyed typing this but that's life. fappenmeister fucked around with this message at 23:03 on Apr 8, 2021 |

This will out me as an old, but the Shell Service Station was my favorite set. https://brickset.com/sets/6378-1/Shell-Service-Station Not only was it the biggest single set I was ever given, but I had asked for it because my dad was a mechanic at a Shell Service station. That set came with a minifig dad (the one in overalls, even though my dad never wore them) that i still have to this day.

Those are both better sets, but for me in particular the BSB relates to me being 3 years old, and the ship itself seeming huge. Plus, in the pre bricklink days working minimum wage i would bid for it on ebay and lose every time. It’s a twin hydra of nostalgia and catharsis.

There's an odd way in which the vague simplicity of older sets encouraged a different sort of creative play than hyper detailed modern sets Maybe Or it's just nostalgia. But I don't think I would have given much of a poo poo about the extra detail in the fishing shack vs sets I had when I was ten

Same. I also remember getting this as a present, too. My dad's friend was visiting and I had just gone to sleep. They gently woke me up, the friend had a wrapped box in his hand and said it was a "magic present" and then they left it in my room for the morning as I was too tired to engage.

Funny you should say that since it was around for ten years (1979-1989) and over 100 sets. I'd say that's a pretty good run. If we're posting favourite childhood sets, for me it's this: As an adult, I have to admit that 6285 Black Seas Barracuda (and of course 21322 Pirates of Barracuda Bay) are the better ships, but I actually had 6286. I was a little young to have had 6285 while it was in shops. It was my largest set for a very long time and it got heaps and heaps of play. Not just as the original set, but also lots of extensive modifications and as a base for MOCs.
