It's nearing the end of 2020 and the world feels a lot like Fallout 4 VR, only with a playable framerate. Those of us who are scrounging the wasteland for toilet paper while evading violent Q cultists can at least take solace that the deliverer of our world's current state is also our savior. The Oculus Facebook Reality Labs Quest 2 has provided us an escape from this living hell and all Zuckerberg asks in return is grainy, black and white video of the world's vast peoples furiously jacking it to VR porn, indexed by name and birth date. Don't lie by setting your name to I.P Freely and birth date to Sept 11 2001 or you'll get banned, depriving you of your weekly drone-delivered nutrition brick.

There's other headsets I guess. Microsoft are somehow still relevant in the VR space, despite their platform being a graveyard. Kudos to them for putting up some kind of fight, even if their inside-out controller tracking still really sucks. HTC managed to regress with the Cosmos series, none of which provided any tangible benefit over the now out of production Vive Pro. Valve's Index is high quality, ludicrously expensive and starting to show it's age, but at least they released a video game! Pimax is broken. PSVR is old. All are accessories, requiring either a powerful PC or console.

Quest 2 is the best headset*. Facebook won.

Yeah it’s a sad thing to always have to say but Quest 2 is the best headset for price/performance and Facebook are also the only ones throwing cash around to get games made. The next best is the HP Reverb G2 but the Windows Mixed Reality controllers suck and it’s effectively a $300 “No Zuck” tax. I’ve had a Facebook account for over a decade so it wasn’t a thing for me but I totally get why it gives people pause if they aren’t already signed up there.

Yeah the Quest 2 as stated is the best value (caveat emptor: you are the product)

The Quest 2 is also really good at streaming PC games to it wirelessly with Virtual Desktop. My friend got one and he has older wifi and he was floored at how low-latency Half-Life Alyx was. 20 or 30-series cards have lower latency streaming tech than 10-series, and the Quest 2 will warp the stream on the headset side when you move your head quickly, to make the perceived latency even lower.

If money is no object, the Index is very polished and comfortable, but you have wires and need to set up tracking cameras (the tracking cameras are mega-accurate though)

If money and jankiness are no object and you want the absolute best specs regardless of how hosed up the hardware/software is, you can go my route and pair the Steam trackers and controllers with the Pimax 5K or 8KX. If you do that, make absolutely sure you get the headset from Amazon so you can return it without hassle. I got the OLED 5K and I love the ultrawide FOV so much that I can't go back to other headsets, but when I tried the 8KX it was the highest resolution headset ever, yet the focal distance was super weird (felt like it was focused to one foot instead of one meter) and it was making me sick so back it went to Bezos.

Yeah Virtual Desktop is magic and even with my old 1060 driving things I've had no problem streaming Steam VR games to my Quest. In normal times I'd probably have spent money on a GPU upgrade rather than a headset, but the market shows no signs of becoming less stupid and what am I going to do, not blow a bunch of money on a frivolous and unnecessary purchase?

I need to upgrade my CPU, mobo and RAM, but gently caress me I have no idea what I am doing or looking at any more. Possibly a PSU too, I have a bronze rated 650W from ages ago.

I will be keeping my GPU (1070, not enough money to upgrade that just yet but the CPU needs to go stat), HDD and SSD. They will eventually be replaced though.

I am in the UK. I could probably throw about £1000 at this.

I have been told to look at a 5600. That would be my baseline needed part. What parts match, and where is best for them?

This is my case fwiw: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Fractal-Design-FD-CA-DEF-MINI-BL-Define-Micro/dp/B004ZH18VE

My current CPU is a i5-4570, hence the need to upgrade. It is so old now.

What is going wrong with that one (face is longer than it should be)
You want a B550 motherboard, whatever floats your particular boat there according to your own particular needs. If you're keeping the case it'll need to be a micro ATX board. You'll also want some DDR4 ram, I believe 3600 mhz works best with that processor. Other people will be able to tell you more there, I think.

Depending on how long ago "ages" is, you probably do want to replace the PSU.

That's all you need to get a basic working system - mobo, cpu, psu, ram, and whatever storage you have atm. If you got any more specific questions then shoot

EDIT - this stuff isn't going to run you a thousand quid and there's not much point buying a super fancy motherboard or whatever, so no need to go nuts. Whatever money you have left from that thousand would be best kept back for a GPU once prices and availability stop being completely insane

Go on pcpartpicker for mobos, check every feature box you care/understand about, and screenshot and come back with it. That stuff is all important when picking.

You want to replace that PSU cause it’s bronze (they’re generally poo poo) and it’s old. What PSU wattage you pick depends on your target GPU. Your monitor resolution and target frame rate should dictate your GPU.

Agree that this will not run you 1000 pounds. Save the rest for your GPU upgrade.

honestly you could probably get away with a 3600, the previous gen version of that part. if you're looking for RAM + CPU + motherboard and you'd like that preassembled with a warranty I recommend CCL's ebay page very highly, they do quite competitive bundles that they've already installed the stock cooler on. having a look, this

Unless they can get a great deal on a 3600, an intel 11400 is probably the better buy right now.

That being said, if it were me and it was in my budget I’d stick to the 5600x most likely. 5600x is pretty significantly better than the 3600 and will likely matter later down the line.

Thrown together a list for you with the 5600x, a good cooler for it, fast RAM and a compatible motherboard. I also included a few extras for consideration. You should definitely get the PSU, and there's a decent NVMe on there too for when you want to upgrade. There's other motherboard options depending on if you need wifi or not or if a USB C port matters to you.

If you wanted to upgrade your case, here's a couple of MATX options you could consider that would be easier to build in and have better airflow:

https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/product/vBTrxr/fractal-design-define-mini-c-microatx-mid-tower-case-fd-ca-def-mini-c-bk
https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/product/kPjJ7P/cooler-master-masterbox-nr400-wo-odd-microatx-mid-tower-case-mcb-nr400-kgnn-s00

As others have said, you don't need to spend anywhere near £1k for just the CPU, RAM and mobo. You can do it for less than £500 even, if you use the stock cooler that comes with the 5600x (adequate but loud). You're probably not buying a GPU anytime soon though, so if you're willing to spend on a few extras you can have a really good system ready to slot a new GPU in whenever they're available at reasonable prices.

I know next to nothing, but everyone here keeps saying "go 5600" when asked. I think it's because the GPU is the bottleneck in your system 99 times out of 100. Your CPU is relatively untouched in both gaming and mining.

Also, the 5600 has fantastic benchmarks.

No.

Do not upgrade a 3800x. The only place you’ll see any difference is productivity/render workloads or playing games at 1080p (and the gains wouldn’t be large enough to justify the cost anyway).

Save that cash towards next gen or later, or put it into a GPU or a better monitor.

If you go a page or two back you can see everyone yelling about it.

1. If you're asking, then you probably don't need the 2 extra cores for 50% more cost.

2. You probably don't need to upgrade your CPU anyway and depending on your setup would not see any tangible benefit right now from doing so. If you're gaming at 1440p or above it's fairly pointless and you're better off saving the money for either a new GPU (lol) or waiting for Zen 3+ or 4 or whatever.

Motherboard: Trickiest part. General rule is don't get a higher model board (like a X570) if it means you're getting the shittiest one of that type. Spreadsheets comparison here: (1) and (2). Make sure it has all the features you want (like number of USB slots, Wifi, PCI slots if you got a bunch of harddrives, etc.) You don't need anything higher than 1GB Lan unless you're running a local minecraft server maybe? IDK. You may have to update your motherboard to support the Zen 3 CPU.
  1. b450 - older budget board that work, but you're limited to PCIe 3.0. However, benchmarks (1) (2) seem to indicate it won't bottle neck your video card or SSD much if at all (for now).
  2. b550 - generally what every one gets. Recommended models to research are:
    • ASRock B550M Steel Legend
    • MSI B550-A Pro
    • ASRock B550 Pro4
    • MSI B550M PRO-VDH WIFI
    • MSI MAG B550M BAZOOKA
  3. x570 - mostly for future proofing or if you can get a good deal. I didn't look at this much. See corrections below.

Motherboard: There's really no point to X570 over B550 unless you have much greater I/O requirements than a B550 board will support. If you're not sure about this, you don't need an X570 board. It's not future proofing in any way to buy an X570 and most of them have chipset fans, which annoy people. Get a B550 board.

x570 is older than B550, so it is most certainly not future proofing.

Not sure if this is the right place for it, but I've been using my bluetooth headphones (Bose QC35s) recently and the sound cuts out sometimes, especially when also using a DualShock controller (over bluetooth obviously). I'm just using a cheapo bluetooth dongle plugged into my front USB 3.0 slots.

Should I just get a higher quality bluetooth dongle? Which one? In retrospect, I probably should have just got a motherboard with wifi/bluetooth.

Can I use two bluetooth dongles at once?

Related, is there a thread/recommendation for 5.1 speakers? I don't think I'm after incredible sound quality, just something serviceable with 5.1. Bluetooth is poo poo is the problem you're experiencing, and having it onboard wouldn't make a difference and in actual fact many motherboard bluetooth chipsets are even buggier. In the instructions for connecting my Xbox controller to the PC they specifically said try to only use one bluetooth device at a time and while you may be able to connect more, expect problems.

The issue is not the single dongle (probably). A single Bluetooth chip is capable of handling a gently caress ton of devices.

What’s likely happening is signal interference between the controller and the headset. Or you’re too far away.

Does it happen when you’re very close to the dongle? If not, get a long USB extender and just get the dongle closer to where you’re sitting. Or get a 20Ft USB cable for your controller.

Fair enough, good points. And thank you both for tipping me off to all-in-ones being generally junk.

I am an attorney so work generally only requires using the Office suite, internet browsing, watching video files, and listening to audio files (I don't need to do any editing or anything like that). Some modicum of game-playing ability would be nice but not necessary given that I don't have any time for them anyways and haven't played a PC game in years.

Regarding pricepoint, I don't really have one. Around $1k would be best but I could justify a bit higher if needed.

As long as you don't want to play modern intensive games at decent resolution and quality, a modern APU should be fine to run at lest some games which means you can go really, really small. NUCs or thin clients. These will be very inexpensive and will do everything you need.

If you want a real GPU you might be best off rolling your own in a small form factor case - except there's a GPU shortage. There seem to be prebuilts available in smaller form factors for around $1,000 but I don't know if they're actually any good. The surface level specs seem OK but usually they cheap out on PSU, motherboard, etc.

I would recommend troubleshooting by plugging the Bluetooth dongle into a USB2.0 port instead of 3, since 3.0 emits em radiation that interferes with Bluetooth.

If that doesn’t work, plug a USB 2.0 extension cord into a port and arrange it so the dongle mostly maintains line of sight with the peripheral. Onboard wireless stuff may help if it has one of those antennae you can place away from your case and close to your peripherals.

Bluetooth is awesome but it’s not magic and you have to account for and mitigate sources of interference to get the most out of it. Some people find that infuriating but it’s really not that bad once you understand how it works.
