I watched the last two subbed eps of Fafner now and god was this what the series needed. I've felt The Beyond was not great so far - Heaven and Earth was essentially the perfect ending, a conflict where everyone survived and hope was on the horizon. The Beyond upturned that and made the situation worse than ever, and things did not improve in the least ep by ep. It felt a bit too despair porn-like for a series that, while dark from the get-go, was always optimistic. It clearly was all meant to lead here - Soushi doing the impossible to completely stop a million death flags and save the people he cares about (in a coma as they may be), and that leading to a way to actually undo said comas and recover the people that were in the final stages of assimilation. Added to Soushi and Miwa growing closer together and the latter being more willing to show her emotions, it's absolutely the right direction to take and I'm glad Part 4 will likely keep this and not be as depressing as The Beyond in general has been.

Also Ruby completely owning Maris was great.

Episode 26 of Tekkaman Blade was completely loving crazy, wow

I actually went and looked at the dub version and it's remarkably intact. They cut out the middle finger obviously and some of the more gratuitous and shocking violent scenes but it kept the same plotline and everything! It must have been mind blowing to see something so action packed and downer in a cartoon as a 90s kid

I also learned that in the dub Tekkaman Evil was voiced by Bulk from Power Rangers. Crazy stuff!

Some 90s cartoons were actually allowed to be pretty edgy if they wanted to be. Exo-Squad, which got mentioned upthread, had on-screen deaths and plotlines where the protagonists outright lost and barely got away.

And then there's Gargoyles.

But yes, Tekkaman Blade is loving Radical, and we don't talk about the OVA interquels or the Sequel OVA.

Tekkaman Blade II is honestly totally fine. It's got a very different vibe from Blade, but it should, because it's telling a different story and the progress of time means the backdrop is very different.

It's not as good as Blade, but it's not an awful watch, and it's short enough that it doesn't outstay its welcome completely.

I'll believe it when I see it. Harmony Gold has not exactly been in good financial straits for quite a while now, license or no license. Moreover, Harmony Gold has made it extremely clear their interest with Macross has only ever been to make more Robotech (this is how they got into legal trouble in the first place!), and since there almost certainly isn't going to be any more Robotech (remember all those failed crowdfunding projects?) if they are actually going to be releasing more Macross it's going to probably have to be as Macross. Again, these people are dinosaurs, their one successful franchise could only have existed as it did due to a mix of Zeitgeist related things in the 80s and having to do with 80s broadcasting standards. The needle for licensing and dubbing anime has moved tremendously since Robotech was a big deal.

As for the live-action movie they've been trying to make that since 2007 at least. I will believe it when I see it, because until it actually comes out it has as much reality as that live-action Akira movie people up and trying to make forever, or that live-action Cowboy Bebop movie (remember that thing?) I believe the most recent news on that Robotech movie was from a couple years back where director number six or whatever said flat out that they didn't have a budget to make the drat movie.

At least the Bebop production is still rolling. Faye's actress just wrapped up her shooting in the last week or two. No idea about John Cho and his leg surgery.

The wording of the agreement (and the fact that the new English language Macross account is atttributed entirely to Big West) makes it sound like this is less of a partnership and more of a non-aggression treaty where neither side blocks the other from releasing the properties in other countries. So no, I imagine Harmony Gold won't be distributing or dubbing any Macross. They're just not going to stop Big West from finding partners to do that with.

If Harmony Gold is claiming dibsies on the characters in Robotech, that seems to rule out 7 but not any of the others. And they let ADV do that release of Macross back in the day, too...

They specifically mention there's some exclusions in the agreement. 7 is certainly the most obvious one due to that.

Really hoping we get some nice Frontier blurays.

I devoured the original EU version when I was younger and watched the Japanese version (via terrible subs) not too long ago. And yeah, him being Emo is pretty justified if you ask me. And drat I love the supporting cast. Ringo (Noal) and Balzac always getting their poo poo thoroughly wrecked in but still coming back for more.
I wish Starr (Aki) was a little less weepy, because whenever she's not she's pretty badass as well.
It's amazing how much of it is not only intact, but how much works well in different ways despite a slight different approach. The English version goes for a more heroic Blade, where the Japanese version is more Emo.
I also found the English finale to be better in one area, because spoilered just in case the English version gives Pegas more character. He remain a mostly emotionless SoSo bot in Japanese. But the English version gives him just a few extra lines which I feel make his sacrifice more impactful.
But you can't beat the Japanese screaming champion for epicness.

Tekkaman appears to be impossible to get though, I'd love to own a proper version at some point. Where did you get yours?

They're so similar that Super Robot Wars W basically treats them as the same series. They're very closely connected in the game's plot.

I haven't watched Orgun to compare them though, my entire knowledge of it comes from SRWW. I did watch and really like Tekkaman Blade though.

Well let's go through them:

Original 1 episode OVA: not great, made when there was literally one volume of manga available and takes huge liberties with what little story there is, also added tentacle rape to something that had none

Early 90's 6 episode OVA's (X2): First six episodes are pretty decent though it still takes a bunch of liberties (for example the Hyper Zoanoid Team Five all like die in two episodes when they're major antagonists in the manga and are mostly still alive), second set of six has major budget issues and starts turning into admire show pretty rapidly

2000's TV series: most faithful, biggest issue is toning down the gore for TV but that's it. Well other than it ending in the exact same place the old OVA's did! :argh:

Live action movies: eh, the first has some good practical effects but basically turns everything into a comedy, the second all I remember is it starring Solid Snake.

It's pretty boring. Very little action, nothing much good to replace it, and some of the character designs are staggeringly ugly.
