I got this title for the dumbest fucking possible take on sea shanties. Specifically, I derailed the meme thread because sailors in the 18th century weren't woke enough for me, and you shouldn't sing sea shanties. In fact, don't have any fun ever.

The way this game's ai handles their "agendas" is dumb as hell most of the time. For example: make 1 gold per turn more than Mansa Musa: he love you. Make 1 gold per turn less than Mansa Musa: he angery! Meanwhile, whether or not you're resisting his attempts at victory, trading with him, settling in places he could've profitably settled, have a military that he could easily conquer or could easily conquer him, etc. doesn't seem to matter at all.

It's going to break a break a bunch of things, not balance anything, and the game will never be patched again.

Does anyone know the rules on establishing a trading post? I've been pounding trade routes into Japan for two games in a row to get the Portuguese achievement but I can never seem to establish a trading post there.

As far as I know and have experienced the rule is "every time a trade route times out". I've never had one not created

In my experience you simply complete a trade route to the destination, and you automatically get a trading post at the destination city. If you're not using any mods then I don't know what to suggest, I don't know of any limits on the number of trading posts or creation thereof. Either some crazy bug or I don't know all the rules of how trading posts work. 60 seconds of searching didn't suggest any easy answer either.

a_gelatinous_cube
Feb 13, 2005

Yeah, I'm thinking it must be a bug. I had trade routes running non-stop both games and never got a trading post. It happened with Japan both times, so I wonder if something in the patch screwed it up. I'm still in awe they haven't fixed the bug where if you decline a friendship request it goes through anyway.

It's extra painful in comparison to EU4's attitude/trust/rivalry system, which isn't amazing or anything but works to make a bunch of factors important at once and gives some variation to each game as different rivalries and trust ratings over time kick in.

Ok, I am literally terrible at this game.

I have never managed to finish a single game even on Prince. I either get my rear end kicked by barbarians or invaded early if I try to focus on building my civ. But if I start spamming out warriors, it seems barbarians just keep coming and they are much stronger. How the hell do you do anything in this game?

Skip warriors, build slingers, upgrade to archers after the first few techs.

Yeah the nice thing about slingers/archers is they don't take any damage when they attack, so if you have one in your city, it can keep attacking at full health for as long as the city exists.

Barbarian camps send out scouts to search for your cities, once they find them they return to their camp and cause it start producing more units - you can use scouts of your own to chase them off. Pair your warriors with slingers to add some offensive power and hunt down barbs that get close. Building up a small army early on that can defend your expansion is generally worthwhile - I usually start with a Scout, then make a Slinger or two, and then start work on some Settlers.

So what's the status of this prediction? I tried the free-play weekend and enjoyed it, but didn't get further than the medieval period in either game. The City Mangement portion was confusing coming from Civ5, but not tragically so. It felt like there may be more to the game, with the DLC stuff or scenarios. And now stuff's on Steam Sale ($40), so maybe?

You can typically find the platinum edition of the game for around £25-30.

For what it’s worth I was right there with you coming from Civ V. VI is more confusing and the civopedia isn’t as helpful as it should be, and for a while I wasn’t really into it. Now I kinda feel the opposite and that VI is honestly so much more interesting and fun I have a hard time going back to V despite putting hundreds of hours into it

I think V and VI are both fundamentally broken games in a lot of the same ways but I find VI's optimization puzzles to be more entertaining and engaging. I can't speak to the launch experience because I held off after seeing the word of mouth, but I got in ahead of the first expansion and even then I liked it better than V at any point of its lifespan.

I don't want to flood this thread with weird things I've been noticing since the last patch, but has anyone had a game where the AI doesn't want to build any wonders? I'm playing my first Diety game in a while and I noticed it is turn 282 and the Colosseum is still available and it doesn't look like the AI has built almost anything except the pyramids.

The colosseum is one of those wonders the AI rarely seems to build for me. Which is weird because of how heavily they prioritize entertainment districts. It's very unlike things like Machu Picchu which someone seems to beeline every game.

I have a theory that because the people who makes this game get to play this game with humans a lot more than the average player does. For that reason they design that is an amazing PVP game (that few players realize the potential of) and ship a passable Player vs AI game.

It's amazing. I just got my first Emporer win and I'm going for Immortal now. I've always enjoyed small continents/archipelago maps but there was always a city state on a vital strait blocking my galleys from exploring too far. Having open borders with all of them plus ALL THE GOLD really makes it much more feasible to pull off the giant catch-up after you survive the first couple of ages.

2) This game’s OST is really good and there are like,!over 100 pieces of music in it,!so idk man maybe learn to appreciate sick tunes like Waltzing Matilda

I played a few games with monopolies on, and then I randomly ate a sub-turn 200 culture win loss out of nowhere and have never tried it again. The only mode I play with all the time is secret societies, but I have stopped the last few games because having a neighbor with 50 voidsinger cultists randomly wandering around your empire is just about the most annoying thing ever.

AGAIN the drat barbarians. I see videos of people using their warriors to explore but every time I do that, some scout comes to my city and triggers the infinite spawn. What the hell am I supposed to DO? Just dedicate 30 turns to building an army and THEN spamming settlers?

Of course, pretty much most of my civ games prior to barbarians went along the lines of "Build cities as much as possible before Genghis comes and kicks my rear end since I never bothered making military units. I am this close to just playing all games as Canada in No Barbs mode.

I'm guessing another problem is the fact that I play 99% of games nowadays while listening to podcasts, including this and chess.

My starting build order in almost every game is scout->slinger->settler. There is going to be a barb camp somewhere around you, so send your warrior out in a tight circle in one direction of your city and you have a 50-50 shot of catching an incoming scout if you are unlucky and they beeline towards your city. Send your scout out in the opposite direction immediately when he pops out, and when you get your slinger you can work a tight circle outwards until you find the camp. If a scout sees your city and gets away just pump out another slinger and you should be good. 2 slingers and a warrior should be able to hold off almost any amount of barbarians on lower difficulties. A single archer and city walls will take care of the problem even on deity level.

It's really important to uncover a lot of the map around your cities so you get the notification when a new barbarian camp pops up so you can preemptively block scouts and clear out the camps ASAP. Barbarians are much more than nuisance in this Civ and it is vital to control them.

Slinger-slinger-settler here. It's good to get that tech boost for archery and once you have archers you can handle most barbs and most sneak attacks. I don't usually build melee or siege troops until I want to take some real estate or I'm playing with somebody who's got good early special units. Hit and run all day.

HOW? Even in normal I now have Barb Scouts that come out of nowhere and pillage my districts! And every time I chase them, regardless of unit, they are always one step ahead unless they hit a dead end. And if I get to the camp with the warrior or slinger, the Spearmen just kill me 30% of the time. Does the RNG just hate me?

I don't play Civ to make military units. It's Civilization, not Fighting. "Si vis pacem, para bellum?" gently caress that.

if the spearman is killing you, you need more ranged units to engage the endless flow of spawns without taking damage. keep in mind that attacking in melee with your warrior will always inflict damage on you, so if you've been fighting barbarians on the way to their encampment, of course the spearman is going to wipe your injured units out. but ranged damage is always free!

i'm usually slinger-slinger-settler because why settle for one city when you can settle one and capture five more... and you'll probably capture ANOTHER settler or two as well while you're at it
