"NPCs whose quest was broken by an update" is a great character concept. (Along with "the guy from the box art", "gold farming bot" and "guy implied to exist by a throwaway bit of flavor text" - it's a shame the source material came out as long ago as it did, or we'd probably have a very confused adventurer who used to be Twitch Plays Elder Tale)

Season's over! Overall, while my memories of the previous two are horrendously fuzzy, I do distinctively remember not enjoying S2 as much as I enjoyed S1, and I did enjoy S3 a lot, so I imagine it's an improvement. Having a proper focus on politics on the first arc was neat, and so was the heavy focus on teamwork and Midori's growth here.

Hopefully they won't wait years for the next season and I will be able to actually remember something when it happens. This season does end on a cliffhanger, so they seem pretty sure S4 is happening at least.

I had the same feeling but when i rewatched S1/S2 with a friend this past summer it wasnt as bad as i remembered. The WILLIAM MASSACHUSETTS rant that takes a whole episode is still awful but at least i could laugh at it a second time around. I think I also watched it week to week which made those slow eps feel even worse.

I haven’t watched S3 fully yet, nice to hear it’s good quality. I wanted to wait till it was all out cause binging anime just smooths out any pacing weirdness for me

That William Massachusetts speech episode is lowkey one of the stranger episodes of television I've seen in like a decade.

If you can say one thing about log horizon, its that it takes the concept and it *runs* with it

The most boring thing about S2 is how they told the stories in that season. Like I’d guess that’s how the LN did it, but for a show it would have been much better to weave the storylines together instead of doing all one, then the other. Both the NPC killer plot and the dungeon raid plot have their high and low moments and they could have offset each other. I think knowing where each story was going made the second watch better for me instead of blind sitting through an ep and just being like “that’s it??”

Before S3, i rewatched S1 and S2 entirely to refresh. S1 is still great, and at multiple points in S2 i was like "... what happened? How did they go from S1 to this? What is this pacing??"

Funnily enough, the William rant episode was actually one of the better ones in S2, one of the few episodes where i felt the spirit of S1 shine through again instead of struggling the urge to stand up mid-episode and go do the dishes instead or something. Somehow, despite being an entire episode about one dude talking to the camera, it didn't drag on, which isn't the case for many other episodes in S2.

I kind of felt this way about this season as well. The political stuff at the start was by far the most interesting plotline they had, and I think they could have afforded to have it going on in the background while all the other stuff happened,

i believe there's substantive evidence that enough material for 12 more episodes has been worked on, but that the author hasn't put it up on the web novel site for whatever reason

anyway i am so glad that minori got rejected lol, they finally put that subplot to bed after way too long

Log Horizon is by far my favorite adaption of the "MMO in an anime" genre due to the focus on the game mechanics and also much more realistic depictions of people's player characters (wearing silly glamours and having meme names etc)

It didn't need a bunch of characters all chasing after the main character in the first place, nevermind having one of them be a teenage girl.

I hope that this gets another season, but also that it's handled a little better than this one.

Speaking of Maoyu, is she supposed to be some sort of isekai'd character? Or was there some other explanation why she had modern knowledge and a crop that was unheard of in the setting?

it doesn't help that minori's feelings for shiroe was revealed to just be extremely unhealthy to boot, and how devastatingly effective the reverence genius' attacks were against her because of that

ultimately though after all this shiroe seems to know that it's akatsuki he loves, even if such words aren't going to pass between them for some time... or years given this franchise's release schedule

She's just a Demon who studied really super hard. There might be some implication that she brought the crop from the Demon World since the trade between the two relams was basically nothing so something like that was effectively the same as the introduction of a New World crop.

She hails from a magical library that contains knowledge from across time and alternate universes. And she studied really hard.

Started a rewatch of Seasons 1 and 2 only to realize Season 3 was finally out!

I didn't hate it, but god it feels like they dropped every single plotline so nothing actually got resolved :negative: HOW DID YOU NOT FOLLOW UP ON ROE2'S ROCKET?? :argh:

Will reading the manga satiate my need for continued deep lore and plotlines?

e: Also, this was the one where the writer was arrested for tax dodging, right?

No, you probably need to read the novels instead.
Yes, this is the author who was caught evading taxes, twice.

supposedly roe2 is supposed to actually meet shiroe and join log horizon formally in volume 16, as was showcased in an event in may 2018, the in-universe date of the catastrophe

...of course, they haven't even released light novel volume 12 (the first arc of season 3) yet in japan, and the fan wiki even has a section on how screwed up that volume's production history has been, so who knows when we'll get that (let alone all the other volumes mamare promised and for all we know will never actually be able to follow up on). the web novel drafts have also stopped being updated since four years ago, and who the gently caress knows if his publishers aren't letting him do it anymore, or if he's just not posting to syosetsu anymore, or other things that it's hard to tell because nobody involved is saying a word

e: in terms of volumes that are out though, i'd recommend volumes 9 and 11 (kanami's stories), since they really get squished in the anime; volume 9 is literally all of one episode in the middle of season 2, while volume 11 is two episodes in season 3 whereas the other arcs got 4-5 episodes each. and for the end of season 2, the anime caught up to the light novel, so the last four episodes were based off notes mamare handed to the studio; the first chapter of volume 10 was posted to syosetsu the same day episode 22 aired. imo more than other volumes, reading volume 10 gives a fuller picture for that arc

I have gradually come to the conclusion that light novel authors are horribly allergic to resolving plotlines and avoid it wherever possible.
