Go caught up on the latest season of The Expanse and that show continues to be amazing. I don’t think any show does their big set piece moments better than it. Also it was probably the best acted season so far with Naomi, Marco and Drummer’s actors putting in some great work.

I largely enjoyed the new season, but the pacing of some characters' stories, particularly Naomi, Bobby and Alex, had the effect of slamming on the brake pedal each episode. I'm totally behind on the books so I have no idea if it had anything to do with how the story is written, but I assumed that part of that was dealing with Cas Anvar getting written off the show for being a sexpest.

I'd be absolutely on board with an entire season of Amos and Peaches just traversing a post-apocalyptic wasteland.

My only beef with dark side of the ring is that imo there's only like 4-5 eps truly compelling to a casual fan of wrestling like me. In that i pretty much stopped watching wrestling as a kid, so im not deep enough into it to be fascinated by "Yet Another Story About a Guy Who Does Too Much Drugs and/or was Really hosed Up Guy". There's a good handful of compelling stories to someone like me (but those are all quite good) and then the rest of them kinda feel samey or just not that interesting for something 44 MINUTES long

Lemme see if i can remember....

I feel like the ones i found interesting were the Benoit Two Parter, Brawl For All, Montreal Screwjob, The Match Made in Heaven, Cocaine and Cowboy Boots...a lot of them blend together for me though.
Like it feels like there's 4-5 stories of the wrestling life involving drug abuse, domestic violence, all leading to an argued about early death and I can only take so many of those. Like i think the Bruiser Brody and Gino Hernandez eps all fall into that territory, and I think I liked them okay but I cant really remember much. I prefer the ones that are like, weird interesting wrestling stories rather than the tragic bio ep which (understandably) happens a lot.

To actual wrestling fans im sure it's all pretty good.

I watched Thunder Force. It's about what you'd expect. Just a goofy movie with functionally zero stakes in every scene but some amusing bits / characters. If you like Melissa McCarthy you'll like it, but nothing I'd go out of my way to recommend. I think the IMDB rating is overly harsh but that site never takes well to comedies that aren't absolutely stellar.

The unfortunate part is just that WWE owns so much of the recorded history of American wrestling. The archive kept me subbed for a while even as the current product lost my interest.

I may yet try Peacock and go back to revisiting the 90s but AEW scratches most of my wrestling itch nowadays.

It is good because that history will be preserved for pretty much ever. It is bad because what makes it out of the archive will probably be sanitized to hell and back.

Also, the only interesting angle for a Monday Night Wars documentary is the WCW one. It is loving hilarious.

Of course the docs are basically worthless, they do an absurd amount of brand protection. What’s interesting is all the actual old shows, being able to watch the very first Nitro, old WCCW and Mid South and AWA, etc. I was watching the Monday Night Raw run starting with its debut in 1993 and all the PPVs they would build to.

(I don’t really recommend this, it was not a good period for WWF/E and Raw was pretty staid and full of squash matches until they did the whole Attitude rebranding.)

I recently watched Limelight, a 1952 movie made by and starring Charlie Chaplin. Chaplin plays an aging entertainer trying to find meaning after losing his popularity. He helps a suicidal ballerina to find her way. The movie is a little overlong, but it's fairly moving in places. It feels like the movie is somewhat about Charlie Chaplin himself and his thoughts on getting older. If you're okay with slow movies, I'd recommend it. I'm only passingly familiar with Charlie Chaplin (mostly through his silent movie comedy), so it was interesting to see him in a "talkie," and he does a good job. I didn't realize he had such a long career. The movie is on HBO Max.

Thanks for all the feedback. We finished up the Witcher and agree that it gets more cohesive once you realize it’s non linear and you know all the main characters. Being based on short stories also makes complete sense since it felt very episodic for a Netflix show. Enjoyable in all, would watch the next season.

Well they are now on Peacock, yes. They weren't when it was just the Network.

I'm still not clear on how extensive it all is, or to what extent the shows are compromised as a result. Like I know the weird bits of Piper wearing half-blackface are gone but did they, like, get rid of all of Mr. Fuji's promos? Or the whole Farrakhan-baiting Nation of Domination stuff (which would be hard to cut because it's where the Rock's character comes from?) It seems to me it'd really be a challenge for the people cleaning it up, just where to draw the line.

Pretty much anything involving Asian or Middle Eastern wrestlers would have to be cut if they're worried about racism. Plus anything involving women during the attitude era due to sexism.

Scare Me is a fun watch. it's pretty hard to describe and not what it looks like, but Aya Cash and the lead guy who I haven't seen before put in some pretty great performances. I liked how the outro hinted at how loving difficult it is to pull off something like Bad Trip. Just take after take that wasn't good enough to make it into the movie, each with their own un-aware unwilling participant. It was definitely an interesting take on the hidden camera genre. They showed a lot of people who were very good sports about the whole thing, but I wonder how many people still weren't happy after the reveal.

I laughed quite a lot though.
