Brookside is my nearest big shopping centre and we moved into the area probably a month before MYER closed. The first time I went in there was a 16 year old pushing his girlfriend around and calling her a oval office so I think that set the tone pretty well. Also yes ironic at the demand for housing in an area where the local high school is pretty terrifying.

Nangaroo have been around for a while tbh. The one I see on FB ads periodically is 'carbon cutlery'. Their sales pitch is to throw away that dirty old note and upgrade your kick-ons with the boys. You apparently get a little carbon fibre plate, card and straw.

I usually get advertised whatever I have already researched and purchased recently. occasionally I see ads for those USB powered coke drying hot plate things and the credit card stash boxes that divide up into even bumps and conceal a straw in a neat little box. I dont know why, I mean i do know why but i dont search for those things at all, so it makes no sense how im being advertised those things. the other thing I get advertised a lot of is really dumb goth fashion, again, something I never search for or want but the algorithms decided I am into.

If you talk about coke the drink enough around an app with the mic on you wind up with ads for that stuff BC coke the drink doesn't pay to advertise on any apps that I can tell

iphones now have a little indicator appear any time your microphone is active when an app is running so its a lot less common to suddenly get ads for tae kwon do classes in The Shire after I talk to my mate from cronulla who's kid is doing BJJ while scrolling through instagram but yeah they denied that was happening and it absolutely was.

A co-worker said that she got targeted FB ads for dog food after visiting their friend's new puppy. Had never searched for, or read about, any dog-related content on any device. I'm not certain that they listen as much as people say, but they do, for sure, cross-reference ads across friends. So if it knows your friends are taking holidays, you'll probably get some holiday ads, because you're likely in the same demographic as your friends.

It also would not surprise me if they are geo locating friends via GPS and using recent search history to serve you thing that the person likely looked at recently and you discussed

I read an article by a woman who got pregnant and started getting ads for baby clothes and stuff and then miscarried but the ads for newborn stuff didnt stop coming and it drove her into a deep depression. like it can see you searching for new baby stuff so it pumps you those ads but then when you are searching for advice or support on miscarriage the algo isnt smart enough to stop pushing you baby ads pretty sad.

When Facebook first started I used to get ads in Norwegian for lingerie and that was probably the best advertising I’ve ever received.

well why not posted:i'm not so sure. no one has ever done anything in a PT Cruiser that I'd consider "suspect" All I now about those cars is from when I worked in law enforcement many years ago with the child abuse unit. One of the guys there was telling me they were trying to catch some guy who's online handle was "PT Cruiser", and the PT stood for "pre-teen". I can't read about those cars without thinking of that, and maybe now you won't either.

A couple of years ago partially out of frustration and curiosity I started really diligently blocking every ad and account on Facebook that attempted to advertise me something, followed by un-liking all the tv shows and bands and whatnot I had liked for whatever reason a decade ago. It got to a point after a few days where my timeline was just completely blank. No ads, no friends posts for some reason, almost always nothing. If anything popped up I'd block it. My timeline was perfect for a brief moment and I only have my weak will to blame.

I think it can work all this stuff out from your social networks alot quicker than it could work it out by listening to your voice. Like someone else said its more plausible and simple that the stats show that friends of people who just got a puppy and interacted with that friend recently are x% more likely to respond to a dog food ad.

I stopped getting ads about erectile dysfunction immediately after my dick stopped working due to med change and I'd made my entire twitter account into a gimmick about how I was a guy whose dick didn't work and that was ok which kind of makes sense if you think about it because why would a guy who was ok with his dick not working need boner injections (they're always loving ads for injections because why wouldn't I boot unregulated internet drugs into my penis)

I use a plugin to hide all the ads and suggested posts in facebook. Between that and unfollowing everyone's posts, facebook has actually become useful for following pages of stores and clubs that I like.
