it was even better

they were a team of stunt motorcycle daredevils who were also all mutants and could merge into a gestalt being that was, I guess, like... a super motorcycle daredevil

one time the Thing joined them but only for like an issue before he left and became a professional wrestler instead

Don't trust the skull.
What was weird was that it felt like your typical "Popular guest star shows up in a new comic to boost sales" story... except it was Team America showing up in New Mutants, and it came out, like, six months after their own comic had been canceled.

New Mutants had a rough start.

Is it true the Morales state sued Marvel for the use of Isaiah’s family in YA/The Crew and that’s why Eli got shelved for a while (and remains a minor character, FATWS notwithstanding)??

That was the rumor at one time but I've never seen evidence that it's true. If it was it isn't now obviously. He's in a TV show and they've both shown up in comics after those rumors were started.

Disney stopped paying royalties to Star Wars EU book authors on books they are still publishing. It's possible they just don't give a poo poo and assume they can out lawyer anyone who makes a stink about it.

The author basically said "You decide". Was there one killer and the rest is delusion? More than one? One working for another? There's no established answer, just a Rorschach blot.

Jeph Loeb has written some terrible poo poo and he destroyed more than one good TV show, but the ending of Long Halloween not making a ton of sense isn't something I'm gonna hold against him. One of my favorite Bogart films (The Big Sleep) is based on a Raymond Chandler novel and the script follows the book pretty close. In the middle of it a chauffer is murdered and the people making the movie realized they had no idea who killed the chauffer so the called up Raymond Chandler to ask him and he didn't know either.

I read Long Halloween years ago, but what stuck into my mind was when Calendar Man and the Falcone kid are together in Arkham they told eachother their names (-"Calendar Man" -"Holiday") and gave eachother bitchy side-eyes.

I've been watching Invincible on Amazon but have never read the comics. Does Invincible spend most of his time in the early comics (It's only 6 eps in on Amazon) getting his rear end kicked? Because so far he's lost more or less 100% of the time and nearly died a couple of times. Atom Eve is pretty good though.

Yeah, he spends a lot of time getting the poo poo kicked out of him. And Atom Eve was the way more interesting character.

Long Live The King!

The whole tonal whiplash a lot of people have regarding the book and probably the cartoon, which I haven't seen yet, is not only due to the blood and guts. It's also because we're set up with the archetypal story of a young superhero like we've seen dozens of times before and instead of rising to the challenge all the time like the norm in this story it shows that sometimes he's way out of his depth to the point where really bad things happen.

bessantj

He seems always out of his depth, like he thinks he should be able to do it because he's "Invincible" but he can't even land properly. he doesn't even seem that interested in taking much instruction from his father. I am interested to see how it plays out though.

Atom Eve keeps me interested as well. her idea of just going out into the world to help people who maybe experiencing famine or drought because she can alter objects at a molecular level is pretty good. It did make me think of Storm a bit. She has said in past X-Men comics that she lived in Kenya and helped stop droughts and so on, now there she is fighting for her life in Westchester and back in Kenya they probably have another drought that she could stop. I suppose that gets into the more philosophical thing about people with abilities. If you have the power to heal people should you spend most of your time in hospitals healing everyone. If you have the powers of someone like Franklin Richards should you solve all the world's problems? Would make for a pretty boring comic series though.

Again I haven't seen the cartoon but he's not always out of his depth in the comic. He has standard comic style adventures. Perhaps for expediency they're skipping over that part in the show and focusing just on him being young and outclassed all the time.

Also in the comic Eve has some limits on her powers that maybe the show doesn't have? I believe she has a block in her brain that keeps her from doing anything too ridiculous including not being able to mess with the living things at all.

It's been a long time snice I read the comic so the details are fuzzy and the show has changed somethings to give the first season a bit more going on. That said, I'd expect this week's episode of the show to be a turning point for Mark so that the end of the season will fit better. If all he does is get beaten up, then getting beaten nearly to death by his father won't carry as much weight. Mark needs to show some successful superheroics so that the audience can think that he might be able to do something.

It's very much a 'teen starting out' story with powers so instead of blowing the Winter Prom date because of Events he gets his kneecaps broken and an old woman dies because he was overconfident.

Later on he's more mature and trained so the outcomes are more classic hero stuff.

The eternal status quo prevents anyone in the Marvel or DC universe from permanently making things better, basically. Gotham will always be plagued by crime (including by the Joker, specifically, murdering people), mutants will always be hated and feared, Wakanda will never stop holding back the cure for cancer, etc.

I'd argue that people were fine with the latter and felt that was a good enough hook that the gore was an unnecessary attempt to be edgy.

On a related, but slightly different note: Is there a story as to why Invincible's costume is literally just the Image logo? Like, I feel like there's gotta be some kind of rights thing there? I know Skybound does a lot of business with Image, so there's probably no ill-will, but it's very weird that a creator owned title would appropriate a publisher's logo that way.

Yeah that's a point in the comics. She had no idea when she was near death the control removed and she could heal herself, it just happened when she almost died. And then it hosed up her powers for a while. That was not too long before I just lost track of the book.

her powers got hosed up because she was pregnant, not because of near death

There's also something that I believe her powers are essentially metabolic related. She's got a limit on what she can do before her body wears out and I'm not sure it's globe-shaping in scope.

Whatever happened to Valiant Comics? I followed them a bit after the relaunch, then I heard there was a corporate takeover around 2016 and the story quality went down the drain?

The man who spear headed their return was forced out. Most of the relaunch talent has long since left. I became friends with one of their marketing guys some years ago and last I heard from him (he's at a different publisher now) everything at Valiant is on the brink of collapse.

To be fair Dinesh started to fall into the same trap as the previous owners of Valiant did by doing a bunch of really dumb gimmicks. After the poo poo they pulled with the Legend of the Geomancer mini I was hopeful it was a one time thing. That one still bugs me to this day though.
