On the topic of Taiwanese agriculture. The current drought has hit Taiwan's farmers with $14 million in losses. The water supply has been halted to 20% of Taiwan's farmland. The Deji Reservoir has perhaps 23 days of water left. It is at 4.6% capacity:  Things aren't looking good. quote:The big question is whether the plum rain season, in May and June, will arrive on schedule and whether there will be the usual amount of rain. Edit: Wow Taiwan never upgraded the irrigation systems the Japanese built and lose somewhere around 25% of rain water that enters the system. Yeah things are pretty bad, and partially its because in Miaoli/Taichung/Changhua they basically didn't start doing poo poo until Feb to try and get people to use less water when they should have seen the signs by Nov It has been very strange because for weeks now, it is looked and felt like it was going to rain. Overcast days again and again. Like you know how you get that feeling that its going to rain soon, and then it just...doesn't. Not really that big a problem in the North yet though, just because it rains alot more there quote:“The reservoirs in Taiwan are old and terribly silted up. We still have irrigation ditches from the Japanese colonial era and the leakage rate from pipelines is high,” he said. which is a different thing than "all the irrigation is from the japanese era"

When Chennai had a drought in 2019 water was carried in by train and trucks from other regions in India, not that easy to do with Taiwan I guess. With global warming making extreme weather events more likely you can only hope that there won't be such a severe El Nino drought like in the late 19th century again.

I would imagine the pan anti-Duterte fractions are banding together behind this SCS reef campaign. It's kinda like the Sino-India border conflict, but instead push by the opposition party.
