Hey Nordic Weasel guy. I was looking at an earlier edition of Five Parsecs from Home and there was mention of two other books: Five Parsecs Gang Warfare, and Five Parsecs Salvage Crew. The links for these two books both lead to Wargamer's Vault but there was no corresponding product.

Are the tables for Gang Warfare and Salvage Crew included in the third edition of Five Parsecs from Home? I love your tables and want more.

Edit: Also I picked up Rangers of Shadow Deep thanks to this thread. I'm pretty impressed so far with the engine and the details. I'm not really sure what mini I should pick for my Ranger though. Maybe I'll look through some Frostgrave stuff.

Hey man, the old stuff was taken down for a bit while I can sort through all of it and make some sort of retro bundle out of it.

The idea is that the cool bits will get updated versions.
If you are just after the tables, paypal me like 5 bucks at nordicweaselgames@icloud.com and I'll send the old versions over your way. Just drop me an email.

<REDACT> THIS!
Five Parsecs 3 pdf question - what is the deal with Soulless characters and upgrades? In their species entry, it says they can use both XP and Bot Upgrades, but that they pay 1.5 times the cost for Bot Upgrades.
Under the Bot Upgrades later in the book, it says that since Soulless can get XP upgrades they can't use Bot Upgrades.
Is this a balance thing to keep from juicing their stats too high? Which rule is the intended interpretation?

The species entry is the correct one. There's a few spots where the reference version later in the text contradicts the species entries and the species ones should be correct in each case.

Cheers. I really want to do more for HoD but finding the time is the trouble, if I am being honest.

Cold War would be very cool. Doing up sets of profiles (and assorted new rules) for say 5-10 year jumps might be an option. So do a 1945-55 booklet with tank stats and notes on relevant nationalities etc. and so forth.

I've had a lot of luck with Reaper minis & stuff is available in Bones as well if you wanna get cheap.

That being said, the system is designed with Frostgrave kits in mind, e.g. one box of Frostgrave Gnolls gets you ~80% of the enemy models and getting the Soldiers and Wizards kits will let you build out multiple crews. Worth noting that Reaper stuff is generally slightly larger than Frostgrave models.

My group just got through the main book campaign after playing very sporadically for about 6 months and we're having a lot of fun. Definitely recommend not reading ahead at the missions or event cards to hold the surprise.

The box of junk I cart to sessions is basically:
- Mix of good quality minis for Rangers and crew
- Generic "RPG minis" off Amazon for baddies
- Various Mantic scenery bits
- Some cheap building blocks for structures and larger scenery
- Dry erase "dungeon tiles" and markers
- Dice and tape measures

Frostgrave is heroic 25mm so will be shorter than Reaper's heroic 28-30mm. Not too noticeable from a distance but they are definitely on the smallest end of the spectrum of 28mm (and adjacent) figures.

I'm thinking of using the following books with tables to enhance Five Parsecs from Home's excellent offerings:

Kevin Crawford's Dead Names (Stars Without Number supplement)
https://www.drivethrurpg.com/product/130967/Dead-Names-Lost-Races-and-Forgotten-Ruins

Kevin Crawford's Stars Without Number (FREE version is below)
https://www.drivethrurpg.com/product/230009/Stars-Without-Number-Revised-Edition-Free-Version

Osprey's Rogue Stars
https://ospreypublishing.com/rogue-stars

Dead Names is a fantastic book for generating dead alien civilizations and alien ruins. If you want a really weird alien civilization you can generate unique Transhumans, Synthetics, Extraterrestrials and Metadimensionals. Each alien civilization type has 11 tables each to generate a narrative or mechanically interesting background. I also recommend the Houses Without Voices section for generating new and interesting alien sites/battlegrounds to die on.

Crawford's free Stars Without Number book has random tables for creating factions and I THINK a faction combat system to fill out your universe's backstory.

I will never get to play Osprey's Rogue Stars, but I can still use their tables. It has four pages of random missions with more tables for noxious atmospheres, weather, and terrain in space wrecks. Also there is a table for what can happen if you shoot a gun you shouldn't shoot in a space ship.

Yes, I love random tables. :neckbeard:

Hi dudes,

I played a series of different games with a friend of mine a few years ago - Pike and Shotte, Malifaux, Infinity, Kings of War, Chain of Command, SoBH, Warpath, etc. - but in the intervening years we've gotten rid of all our gaming boards, our terrain and our armies (apart from my 2nd Edition 40k Space Marines and Warpath squats/space dwarves) and forgotten everything we know about any of it.

We are mooting the idea of picking it back up again, but a little unsure of what the landscape looks like. We are definitely looking at relatively modest base counts rather than massive battles, and have considered tokens/etc. instead of models for Epic 40k-style as he lives on a narrow-boat and as such is very space constrained.

I've posted in the Specialist Games thread about Net Armageddon, but I figure that I may as well ask here too! Battletech? Dropzone Commander? Any thoughts?

There's a billion games you could start, but given that space is a concern, Battletech would be an obvious pick I think: Its kind of self-contained space wise since it's on a board and you only need a few figures each to get started.

Battletech is great. I would pick up "A Game of Armored Combat" as it has everything you need to get playing right away and is a modestly sized box. The key thing with Battletech is that it's way more about the record sheet for each mech on the board than about models. You could literally play with coins if you felt like it.

Bushido Risen Sun is played on a 2x2 and both light on models and scenery. Dropzone and fleet are both 4x4, and zone does need plenty of of scenery, but the cardboard stuff is pretty good, so ymmv. If you want to go with cardboard scenery Carnevale might be an option too, as I've played plenty of games on a slightly smaller 3x3. The starter set can go a long way in that regard.

Is there any setting you're looking for?

We played Dropfleet Commander and enjoyed that but I just don't think the theming was strong enough. I've ordered 3mm, 6mm and 15mm 'Space Marine HQ' sections from Vanguard Miniatures and I'm going to base those up and see how they feel in my hands - and use that to determine which to push from a model size point of view. I know my buddy was really interested in Epic but we couldn't muster enough models together before.

I'll check out "A Game of Armored Combat" - is there a battle report that's well done enough for me to understand how the game works without dragging?

I'll have another look at Deadzone, but I remember dismissing it the first time around - and I'll check out Bushido also. Thank you!

(As a completely out of left field option I see that Mantic have a Man'O'War clone, is that any good?)

Agree with you on Dropfleet. The rules are good as far as ship movement and combat go, but I just can't get into the actual dropping of troops and then contesting dropzones. I know they wanted to make it distinct from BFG, but I just kind of wish I could have scenarios where ships slug it out.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R_bVx1pyHEw
This seems to be as good as any other video as far as walking you through A Game of Armored Combat. I haven't watched the whole thing, just skipped around, and it sounded like their explanations of various rules was decent and easy to follow/

Deadzone is probably my favorite game at this point in time. It's super fast, has enough options to make its complexity range from "beer and pretzels" to "fairly deep". There's enough factions at this point to find something to appeal to anyone. Definitely give it a second look.

The Man'O'War clone is actually a reskin of Black Seas, a Warlord Games system that was already pretty decent for ship combat. They've just tacked on things like magic. There's a fliers expansion coming out soon.

Checked out the beginners box video and seemed good, then I checked that slightly bigger version video and phew, it feels like a bit of a slog - tracking heat vs heatsinks, movement creating different shooting and being-shot modifiers, etc. I think we're all up for something with a low model count but I think we would just get lost in minutiae. I'll do some more digging, and continue to check out Deadzone. We went heavy on Warpath/Firefight, Kings of War and whatever their heroquest rip-off was and it all just deflated about the time the Lost Kingdoms stuff came about.

I really enjoyed the feel of Gates of Antares also, but it felt like it ended up a stillborne :(

Agreeing with Lord_Hambrose. You can play on Megamek and see if you like the mechanics, though it probably doesn't quite teach you how it will feel when you do it manually.

The only reason you'd need two boxes is so that you have two sets of those miniatures. To just play, one box is more than fine since you really are just buying the rules and a couple of hex maps plus all the fluff materials. The box also has standees so you can play with one set of minis and one set of tokens.

"Small scale" Kings of War sounds like a pretty good fit. Use 10 or 15mm minis and half or centimeter scale and you can fit a lot of game into a tight space. You're not likely to find much in the way of community for it, but for two people playing together regularly it's a good experience, and really fast to put armies together.

10-15 mm KoW gets a little tricky sliding bases around at that scale, but it is cheap and you can do a lot of creative modelling throwing 10 mm dudes onto reaper bones monsters and building weird stuff. Grab some Pendraken Warband figures and go nuts.

My favorite game at that scale right now is one page rules fantasy because individual basing saves a lot of the eye roll nonsense that large base wargames cause.

It's been around for ages, I've played the videogames and I'm going to try out the boardgame with 'A Game of Armoured Combat' but I have a couple of questions:

1) If every mech has a datasheet like Warmachine, where do I get those datasheets from?
2) Is Catalyst a new licensee for the franchise which is why we're getting the new miniatures? Should I expect them to in turn go under or lose the license? (and thus get a lance or two box at the point they're released while the going is good?)
3) What is Alpha Strike?
4) Why do I see some battle reports using hexes, and some without?
5) WTF am I hearing about submarines, stormy weather conditions, etc. ? Is this in the expanded rules? Is it something that's even compatible with normal gameplay or is it just a bit of fun on the side?

1) In the sourcebooks, if I remember correctly. Usually divided by eras, but you can also find some online if you look around.
2) I think Catalyst is doing a great job with the IP, if you're interested now is a good time to jump in as the boxed set is a good starter.
3) A quick play, simplified version of Battletech. Much more similarly to a traditional tabletop wargame: no box-ticking, but loses a lot of the granularity in the weapons and gear people expect from BT. Can be played hexless, and there are converters online that can give you the Alpha Strike stats of a lot of the units in the classic game. I don't think it's better or worse; just a different way to use your toys.
4) See no. 3, but there are also a few houserule and options that play hexless.
5) There are tons of additional material for this game over the 30+ years it been around. The good news is old stuff is 90% useful with the modern game, unlike GW or similar style 'kill it and start over every 8 years.' Bad news is it's a lot of back catalogue to sort through if you're new and starting out.

There's a Battletech thread here. I'd ask them for more help if you want to go deeper down the hole.
