Holy poo poo, the murder scene in the second episode of Columbo is incredible. I love this style, no gore or annoying scream, but you still get the idea of the murder and then we're focused on the killer's face, separate scenes of the aftermath montage taking place entirely on his loving 70s rear end rectangle glasses

Oh yeah, that episode rocks. Every now and then Columbo gets borderline experimental and it’s great.

That killer’s actor, Robert Culp, is in two other episodes and they’re all great.

I'm convinced the CBC is just a state funded way of keeping actors employed in Canada and sitcoms are literally made and cancelled based on a roll of the dice.

Or you get Corner Gas, which everyone in Canada loses their loving minds over it, and not a single other country has the slightest interest in it.

The Emma Watson movie was immediately dated because the crazy future tech are small cameras that people put all over their homes and at work so that it tracks everything you do and you don't have privacy anymore and apparently that's bad. But people are actually doing that right now with Amazon Echo and Siri.

The writers and creators are black though aren't they? I saw her thread yesterday and personally I have some issues with it. I don't disagree with what she says about the show, and I understand that it seems as though the only shows with Black people at the front and centre are ones that are about 'trauma', so of course I get why people pull back from that. THEM in particular feels a bit - though I hate the phrase - torture porn-y and I think it hides that by being about a serious subject.

However, she then follows it up with...

https://twitter.com/angelicabastien/status/1382394574140813317?s=19

And to me that's straying a little too close to THEM as being an Absolute bad and furthermore if you dare praise any aspect of it then can you really call yourself an ally?

The point has been made before about how some rich black creators are using the plights of the lower classes as a form of exploitation media that appeals to white people more than anything, in order to market themselves as being hugely progressive. When Judas and the Black Messiah, also by black creators, came out there was a similar article (I think from the same author, actually), about how it’s using black history as essentially a series of aesthetic vignettes without getting at the root of the problem, and mainly being about black suffering without much point to it other than to downplay the real history in favour of turning it into a pop culture prop, essentially.

It calls to mind the reasons why Dave Chappelle originally ended Chappelle’s Show. I cannot speak to how big of an issue this is in general, but I certainly understand why you wouldn’t want high profile black stories to just be about suffering and endless racism, especially when real trauma and white supremacy is still happening in the real world right now and you’re using that imagery to puff up your story about how the devil is racist.

I don’t know that I agree that you should not tell these kinds of stories as part of a larger black oeuvre, but I can understand how frustrating it is when there’s essentially an entire genre that thrives in it. It’s a difficult issue to tackle because I’m positive that something like Them will resonate with many black people regardless, and I don’t think there is anything wrong with that. It certainly makes me more interested in actually checking the show out with a very critical mind going in.

Yeah Lena Waithe was also involved with QUEEN AND SLIM, which also had similar backlash. And like I said I totally get where those points of view come from. Though the creator and writer of all the episodes is a dude named Little Marvin who hasn't really done anything of note before. I just wanted to highlight the name Little Marvin.

Current criticism is starting to get way too comfortable with the idea that the Art should be a reflection of your personal beliefs, and that expressing an acceptance of that Art - even though you might personally disagree with it - is somehow a reflection of you.

It seems like it's the next step in the whole "pop culture as identity" thing, which itself was just the next step in the franchising of pop culture.

I think there's definitely something here with portraying the whites of the era as cartoonish monsters with an edge of 'look how bad things used to be' which absolves the racism of today. The show portrays the in-your-face racism that everyone is comfortable with criticizing and dis-associating with. It's a strictly apolitical approach to the issue. Plus, you have the constant almost fetishistic portrayal of race-hatred and race-violence that brings it all way over the top. Just off the top of my head, what is going on with the ghost origin story and what was going on with the cat in the bag sequence. Extremely gratuitous.

It honestly feels ten years out of date in today's political climate. Like what is the whole weird cop sideline? They sideline having a white savior (by the main cop just being nice on account of being bribed) but they then still drift into this weird territory where the police are actually better than the suburbanites. Like imagine the same story but in contemporary America, the main cast would be dead by police before the end of the second episode.

I enjoyed Them, but it's a very dumb show with in my opinion very little to say.

Well now that I've officially watched every episode of Kim's Convenience I can say that the biggest mistake the show ever made was focusing on Jung's workplace and coworkers as regular characters instead of just a background thing, because it cursed the show to have between 5% to 45% of every episode taken up with extremely stale generic "workplace humor" gags and plotlines that feel like they were lifted right out of 1992.

I love this cultured hell that tests my youth.

I can't blame that lady for being so annoyed about the situation. It feels like a large portion of the media about black people nowadays is about either slavery, injustices, racism and other societal wrongs and it is honestly loving exhausting. We could have all manner of various programs written and created by black authors and showrunners but what largely gets greenlit are things about the aforementioned topics.

It might seem silly to dismiss that woman's response but I'm starting to feel the same kind of frustration she seems to be experiencing. At some point there has to be diminishing returns on yet another piece of media "exploring" black people suffering.

zoux
Apr 28, 2006

Interestingly this is similar to the "bury your gays" trope that arose in the 70s and 80s. It's been coopted by people who want to make their fanfic ships moral questions, but it originally referred to media in which the suffering of gay and lesbian main characters culminated in their death or otherwise bad end at the end of the film. I don't think those movies were made for gay people, and I worry that a lot of the shows centering black pain aren't for black people, but rather for a way for white viewers to expiate their guilt over the plight of marginalized communities, and in that sense I get it. OTOH I'm not going to tell Lena Waithe or any POC creator what topics around race and racism they should avoid, and how they should portray them, but I think we're seeing more of this stuff because there's a white audience that wants it. Again, not out of sadism, out of a genuine desire to try and empathize or share the pain of these communities, but overly eager white people trying to help do cause problems, even if they don't mean any harm.

I;ll add as a qualifier that I haven't seen Them, and I checked out of Lovecraft Country for kind of the same reason - I feel like I'm being explotative watching stuff like that sometimes. But I did enjoy Watchmen and Get Out. I saw a tweet from a black person saying "What people don't understand about Get Out is the scary part isn't the Armitages, it's the sunken place" and that made me realize that white and black audiences are interpreting these shows and movies very differently.
