What are you looking at?
The graphics in the AKI games were cartoony as hell and nobody gave a poo poo because the games were great.

my 2nd favorite thing about the N64 AKI games is how some wrestlers are just permanently stuck in a state of euphoric facial rigor mortis

also my favorite part about AKI is that the company still exists and makes the style savvy games (definitely not the same devs, but same company)

Style Savvy is so loving good tbh but I think the series might be dead

I like how brutal everything looks in them. I'm playing 2k19 (its on psnow) and nothing looks impactful or good at all really. It also sucks at everything else and the pin kickout deal is a criminal game design offence.

I thought the pinfall mechanic was the worst gamecrime until I saw the submission mechanics in UFC 3.

They also made the PSP Yakuza/RGG spin-offs, which got positive reviews for the fighting system.

there was a really good tna game that came out like twelve years ago for iphone. the career mode was a turn-based rpg where you learned new moves by leveling up and chained them together for big combos and you could become a face or heel depending on how you treated people. they should just update that for new phones and give it an aew reskin

This could be the most one-sided fight since 1973 when Ali faced an eighty-foot tall mechanical Joe Frazier. My memory isn't what it used to be, but I think the entire Earth was destroyed.

Somebody should make the fake undertake that Kenny used in his last njpw entrance into a real game

It seems more functional than PWX and that's after nearly 2 decades of work on PWX :v:

Seriously I hope Ultraviolence does well and makes The Wrestling Code guys (who are my pick to be the next PWX-level-debacle) look like complete goobers

Cavauro
Jan 9, 2008

if they add a lot of animation outside of what is required to look functional it would add a shitload to the experience and make it seem way more chaotic. an example would be making the jobber character flail around while falling, and maybe having several bump animations, many of which are botched and horrific. please do not take this as criticism of the pre-alpha footage

Had one of my periodic "try to actually play FPW" spells and man, the 2K games got slow but they had the right idea about fudging the animations so that if you weren't in the exact right place to connect with a strike at exactly the right time, it would still work. It would be one thing if just the rhythm-game button prompts for grappling were demanding, but who played this and decided the success conditions for a simple clothesline were acceptable? Not even the AI gets it right, just bizarre whiff after bizarre whiff

I've been playing Fire Pro games since SNES so I'm admittedly speaking from a place of deep indoctrination to the gameplay, but to me that's just part of how the game is played. Expecting the striking to work like other wrestling games is expecting Fire Pro to be a different game IMO.

You just have to learn how to get the right distance to connect with strikes, and then you'll be better at it. Don't keep running into the same wall when you're not succeeding at playing the game. It's all part of the balance of the gameplay. For example, quick low/mid kicks aren't as strict with their hitboxes so you can hit way more of them, but they're light strikes that aren't going to change the course of the match. If you want to hit a big clothesline or head kick or something, you need to be able to create that opportunity and not be sloppy with when you're throwing them and how often.

I was actually surprised to see so many people talk about not actually playing the game in recent years. People talk about it as if it's the norm but no, these are video games that people have actually played and enjoyed playing for many years.

Jesus! Jesus Christ! Say his name! Jesus! Jesus! Come down now!

It’s hard enough to learn positioning in the tutorial where the enemy is more or less sedentary. I’m stuck and can’t progress in the tutorial because the rope rebound kitchen sink move doesn’t trigger even though my character’s knee is up and looks like it should hit the opponent.

I can’t tell if my character’s in the wrong position or the animation is outside a 1-2 frame qualifying window, but every time they just bonk together lamely. Learning an actual move set in actual play? Not happening. It’s like they saw the Yuke’s kick-spamming stunlock problem and decided the thing to would be making free striking mostly theoretical in their game.

I love Fire Pro but the core gameplay is basically in the exact same place as it was in the late SNES era. The main competing games of the time were those awful Yukes games and it pissed me off when I first emulated it as a kid that we had got such poo poo wrestling games in the states when stuff like this existed. The real shame is that X Premium is still a legit better wrestling game with more customizability than most in the last decade. World is so loving cool to have, but it really does still feel like that SNES game with updates.

i think it's actually a different game from TEW2020, they're just using that since the actual game isn't in the twitch game directory. i've only been able to watch bits and pieces due to reasons but i remember jawnny saying it was "pro wrestling sim" and it was early access and :20bux:

Ah, my mistake.

The interface looks good but it seems like the audience favored short matches and just lots of segments, to the point that they decided to make Dynamite not have wrestling on it and put all the matches on Dark. May be something to do with how the game interprets American audience preferences? (I recall TEW sorta does that with "Sports Entertainment" not being as concerned with match quality, etc.)
