Also though there are plenty of visual novels with gameplay. 428 Shibuya Scramble uses multiple characters that you switch between and to progress the story, you need to have each character doing the right thing at the right time, sometimes intentionally making a character fail at what they want to do because another character needs to get away from them. It's effectively a puzzle game in that way, but it's still absolutely a visual novel. Some games have you go through a story, only really making decisions, but those decisions have impacts on later stuff, and it's fun to see how those decisions play out. Tokyo Dark has that. It's not all just progressing through dialogue, either. In Tokyo Dark you at least have to manually move your character from area to area. If you keep layering stuff on that model, you'll eventually get to Disco Elysium, which many people think is great, or even groundbreaking, but it's really just a visual novel with dice rolls and inventory management, and with an aesthetic drawn from impressionist paintings instead of anime. 428 Shibuya Scramble also is not anime. World End Economica was good for me because each game in the trilogy went hard on explaining a certain facet of the stock market that had relevance to the main plot. It basically tied into the entire episode's story so it didn't just dump the info on how shorting works, it then follows the story progression of someone trying to short stock, looking for hints, either succeeding or getting hosed by the market, and the end result for their financial and personal life. All super anime of course. Then you get the VN's that are basically cyoa games where the fun is replaying a short game multiple times to see the different outcomes.
