Partaking of a Substack column can be like drinking cow’s milk straight from the teat instead of waiting for it to be pasteurized, homogenized and bottled by the dairyman. Like drinking raw milk, the reading experience comes with pluses and minuses. It’s a rare Substack—even when written by a writer I admire—that wouldn’t be twice as good half as long. Not that self-indulgence is always a sin. I’d rather read Greenwald in all his woolly, ragged glory than see him bottled up by an editor. If you like your copy groomed and pristine, copy-edited professionally and fact-checked, and locked down by logic, some Substacks will give you fits. Some Substackers do more meandering than writing (you know who you are, Yglesias), pursuing their argument as if taking the longest possible route to buy a jug of milk from a 7-Eleven that’s only a block away from their door.

i kind of get the impression he actually really likes raw milk and is just trying to avoid making it too obvious

I used to live next to a farmer who gave me gallon jugs of raw milk still warm from her one cow. It was delicious. Had like an inch and a half of cream on top. The cow was adorable too

also there are plenty of counters that blacks de facto can't sit at

He got absolutely wrecked in a recent TNR piece so maybe his racism is newsworthy again.

quote:

Though South Africa barely registered as a market for the drug companies, the appearance of cheap generics produced in violation of patents anywhere was a threat to monopoly pricing everywhere, according to the drug industry’s version of Cold War “domino theory.” Allowing poor nations to “free ride” on Western science and build parallel drug economies would eventually cause problems closer to home, where the industry spent billions of dollars on a propaganda operation to control the narrative around drug prices and keep the lid on public discontent. The companies suing Mandela had devised TRIPS as a long-term strategic response to the south-based generics industry that arose in the 1960s. They had come too far to be set back by the needs of a pandemic in sub-Saharan Africa. U.S. and industry officials paired old standby arguments about patents driving innovation with claims that Africans posed a public health menace because they couldn’t keep time: Since they could not be relied on to take their medicines on a schedule, giving Africans access to the drugs would allow for the emergence of drug-resistant HIV variants, according to industry and its government and media allies.*

[...]

*Among journalists echoing this argument was former New Republic editor Andrew Sullivan. When The New York Times reported Sullivan was defending the companies’ lawsuit while taking undisclosed funding from PhRma, the industry trade association, Sullivan remained defiant in the face of evidence-based accusations that he was an unethical journalist. “It behooves me to say I see absolutely no problems with [drug industry sponsorship],” he told Salon. “In fact, I am extremely proud to get some support from a great industry.” It later turned out that Africans adhered more closely to the twice-daily pill regimens than patient populations in rich countries.
