So 80s and some of the 90s predates VHS intended to sell to consumers, so to buy you had to get the Video Rental store price which was usually $90ish for common popular things.

I'd totally see anything not super popular that's also an import going for more.

Being a kid and an anime fan in the 90s sucked. You were stuck watching what few shows made it to TV and every once in a while Sci-Fi Channel would air some anime movies. Your best bet was having a weird uncle who would import laserdiscs and/or would buy the R rated tapes so you could watch stuff like Akira or the original Ghost in the Shell movie.

Bio Booster Armor: Guyver was another one and it ruled. That was for some reason fairly accessible for suburban 12-year-old me in the 90's; they sold VHS dubs of that at Suncoast and similar. I didn't even know they made the live-action American movies until way after the fact, and wow did they suck. Then, several years ago, they made a new anime adaptation of Guyver...which also sucked.

Definitely still expensive as gently caress, though. Like $30+ for 2 episodes on a VHS.

Here in the UK it was one episode per tape I still have my entire set of them (The Celtic frost song in the MANGA VIDEO trailer is forever etched into my brain) as for the live movies I disagree, it’s gory power rangers with Luke sky walker and solid snake they’re goofy but still fun, there was actually a 45 minute OVA based on the Guyver that came before the 12 part series I think I have a VCD of it somewhere that I made complete with a photoshopped dvd case (it was in this case that I also used to hide my VCD of short porn clips because I knew my parents wouldn’t ever borrow it .....that may also still be in there )

What I’m saying is The Guyver ruled

In the early 80's Paramount started with Star Trek. They then had a 25 for 25 sale with 25 films available on VHS for 25 bucks. It did well enough that they partnered with another company in 1986 to create Paramount Pictures which would become Suncoast Video. But Top Gun was the watershed moment. At $29.95 it sold so many god drat copies that even movie studios realized there was a gently caress ton of money in consumer sales and by 1990 there were some holdouts but not a lot. It would have been weird to not find mainstream newish releases for sale.

That is a thing in the comics, there is an old New York tailor who makes and repairs costumes for heroes and villains, no questions asked.

A Disney+ series about the tailor would be great in the same way a Night Nurse series would be. If you can get the major actors to all show up for an episode or two.
