Old Town Road to EGOT

I enjoyed the live podcast format and was glad to give them some money for it :shobon: It sucks that it goes away forever after a week, but I liked the Terminator Dark Fate one and I liked this one too. It gave me something to look forward to. I rewatched Rambo Last Blood yesterday before the show and that's a truly batshit movie.

Bought and watched the Last Blood live show. First time for one of these, and I didn't really care for it. I'm so used to being able to move around and do stuff while a podcast is on, and it was weird to just sit there and watch them just.....talk. The visual element really added nothing. Won't be doing this again.

It's a little weird and they don't really take advantage of the visual element. I do it to support the show. I also get a little drunk beforehand and grab some snacks, so it feels more like a hangout. The chat for me was ten minutes behind, so that was useless. I think if they were able to interact with the chat it might be better.

That bit killed me because 20 years ago me and a friend were riding with two other people to a concert and my friend had dropped acid an hour or so earlier. When we stopped at a gas station one of the people we were riding with asked the driver "can you get me some Muncho?". Cut to my tripping friend suddenly screaming laughter until tears run down his cheeks because until that moment he thought Muncho was something I had made up.

So I decided to finally watch Zardoz today in honor of them gushing over it so much. Yea, I can see why people would like it. Definitely needed a bigger budget.

I'm watching it now, and 43 minutes in, they're showing Sean Connery different kinds of porn, trying to see what will maybe get him hard. So far, none of it is working, and Connery is super smug about it.

This movie goes places, I tell you what.

fake edit: Well, something finally worked. And it wasn't porn.

Like, a whole section of a movie dedicated to Sean Connery's erection. Wild.

I was listening to the episode, and, after less than 20 minutes, decided I just had to actually watch the movie. It sounded too crazy to not watch first.

I have to say, so far, it has not disappointed.

Like, of course, I've heard of it. My dad always said it was awful. He took my mom to see it on their 3rd date, I think, and was worried she'd never speak to him again. (To be fair, it's a terrible early date movie. It's a miracle I exist.) But drat, this movie is loving nuts.

If anybody (else) bought tickets to any actual live shows in 2020, and had them rescheduled a couple times... Double check with your venue again, since they may be moved yet again.

For example, after being pushed back a few times last year, the Cleveland show was pushed back to April 2022. Apparently today it got moved up to October 2021.

I got emails from my venue a few weeks ago and WHM updated their website around the same time. I think this weeks' episode is the first one to actually mention it. I'm glad they're still doing the tour. I think most of the cities they're going to are firsts, so it's cool they're trying to stick with it.

So after finding Zardoz absolutely fascinating, I decided to check out Excalibur for the first time. (I know, I know, it's always been on my list, just hadn't gotten around to it.) And am I crazy, or is it...kind of boring?

Like, the first half feels like a speed run through major King Arthur events just to make sure they're covered. "Urthur Pendragon! Merlin! Urthur puts the Sword in the Stone out of nowhere! Arthur pulls the Sword! Lancelot! Let's just put the Lady in the Lake in the Lancelot scene! Uh...poo poo, we don't have a round table yet? Uh, here, have Arthur mention he just won a war! Hooray, time to make a round table!"

It gets better once Morgana shows up, they get to Camelot, and an actual plot settles in, but that's over an hour in, and that first half feels like a clip show. Was it heavily edited down? I should note that it sticks the landing. And the costume design loving rules. But also, was the entire movie ADR'd? It sure feels like it.

Sorry, don't know where else to talk about this. And it's not like there are better King Arthur movies to compare it, too. That's certainly a character in need of a good adaption.

edit: I should add that I think expectations probably add to both. I've been told my whole life that Zardoz is the worst movie in the history of cinema, and that Excalibur is one of the greatest epics of all time. And turns out that neither is true.

drat, WHM and Chapo and Episode 1 together in a lineup is amazing. I know some people are mixed on the On Location Live shows the gang has done, but they posted that apparently for this one they're all going to be physically together in Brooklyn on the stage so that should do a little to capture the feel of a real live show (even without an IRL audience).

So I know they’re just a comedy podcast, but in the Goldfinger episode, breezing past the scene where Bond straight up rapes Pussy Galore in the barn with, “So then they gently caress in the barn, anyway...” was kind of surprising. She fights against him, he forcibly kisses her while she fights against him, and she gives up and lets it happen. But whatever, I guess.

I don't think I'm reading too much into this. Again, just a comedy podcast, but they’ve talked about problematic things before. So it was weird they just ignored it here and said, “So then they gently caress,” as if it was any normal thing, I guess because I was a WLM.

They’ve addressed the scene in a few other episodes and talked about the disgusting nature of it. I would assume the “anyway” remark is their way of just going through it without giving it any undeserved attention.

Thought this episode was great, Eric cracking as he said "Moon Over My Hammie" made me laaaaugh. They explicitly say that the way women are treated in the movie and that time period is abhorrent. I'd rather them gloss over it than start talking about Bond raping women but that's just me.

And his excuse was that "In a movie about U.S.-Japan relations, if you cast someone who’s black, you introduce another aspect because of tension between blacks and Japanese.", which sounds like barely a step above just outright saying "This movie is about showing how they are racist towards WHITE PEOPLE, which is the biggest crime of all! Who cares if they are racist against black people?"

I love the TV show. The end went off the rails, but for a long time it was a lot of fun, and solves the minors complains they say they have about the movie. (Spoilering comments from the podcast.)

"I wish there were more immortals wandering around the streets looking for fights."
Watch the TV show.
"Are there no new immortals? Like from the 1950's or anything? Or was there a cutoff?"
Watch the TV show.
"I could use some female immortals running around.”
Oh jesus, watch the TV show.

I also love the show introducing The Watchers in season 2. I nice way to build on the Highlander myth. Yeah, it was dumb, in that 90's sci-fi/fantasy way, but I loved it.

Also, yeah, great episode so far.

I'm not sure why I like it so much and I can't think if another movie to really compare it to. Maybe it's how some people like Dune, Heavy Metal, Labyrinth, The Hunger or Bakshi's Lord of the Rings. Those are the best comparisons I can come up with and I sort of put them in the same category. Hope that somehow makes sense.
