The framing of a "news" thread rather than a politics one is really interesting and it's good the mods are trying new things to keep the forum orderly while retaining the quality of posting. I still can't believe the governor of OK used the Murrah Bombing pulpit to rail against cancel culture. We've been through a decade of horrific poo poo but man, that one really stunned me.

I think (and it's been said by others much better than me) that Biden's long term experience in the Senate really is helping them out here. He knows how to effectively frame things so they have half a chance of getting through the Senate/Congress, which is something that I think that presidents with no or little senate/congressional experience with often struggled with.

Vilsack is doing a thing, which is cancelling the Farmers to Families Food Box Program. https://gottobenc.com/usda-announces-continuation-of-the-farmers-to-families-food-box-program/ quote:The Farmers To Families Food Box Program – U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue announced the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) will purchase an additional $1.5 billion worth of food for nationwide distribution through the Farmers to Families Food Box Program. In total, USDA has distributed more than 132 million food boxes in support of American farmers and families affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. This was started in the 2nd quarter of 2020, and if you were assuming it was just full of corruption and grift, you'd be right. Fun reminder that Perdue responded to correct claims of him using his office for a corrupt land deal by denying he made as much money as was claimed. Basically "I didn't do that well so you're lying." Lots of links here https://xtalks.com/why-the-usda-can...%20last%20week. quote:Almost immediately, food banks began reporting that deliveries were not arriving, that the boxes were falling apart and that the produce was in poor condition. The program distributed food boxes to around 2,100 of the country’s 3,006 counties, leaving around 1,000 areas without service. Food banks were forced to pick up the slack and incurred thousands of dollars in extra delivery costs. The cutoff to apply for this? 75% of your farms AGI being under 900k. And you could also get relief funds if you grew tobacco or turf sod lmao The only reason I heard about it? https://twitter.com/RepCawthorn/status/1384545431967965187?s=20 So if it pisses off Madison it's a good move. If want to help hungry families, expand SNAP and WIC benefits. Don't send them boxes of brown lettuce.

Gatts posted:I would like to know when the Dems are putting in HR1 and Infrastructure Bill for vote. Don't know about HR1 but Biden has asked the Republicans for a serious infrastucture counterproposal by May. If they can deliver any kind of meaningful response, there may be some compromise and an actual bill sometime in June. There's no hard schedule for it, though. Lots of caucusing to see what the Democrats themselves can agree to support, apart from what the Republicans may want. I'm not holding my breath on any sort of meaningful response from the Republicans, anyway, so that may speed it up a bit. We'll probably see a fairly solid package coming together sometime this summer.

Kristi Noem ended up having to veto the very bill she pushed after the NCAA told her what time it is. The one that passed one house here got referred to a Dem-chaired Education Committee so that one is probably dead too. There's a second prong to this ("this" being some ALEC manufactured culture war wedge issue ), that's the banning of trans affirming health care for minors, which is getting blowback from businesses rather than the NCAA. That's the bill that the AR legislature overrode Asa Hutchinson's veto on. zoux fucked around with this message at 18:11 on Apr 20, 2021 |

Sounds very Christmas-tree, loaded with all sorts of individual rep pet projects and unintended consequences. For example, one issue I saw was the automatic voter registration provision could accidentally register non-citizens to vote, since non-citizens can receive government IDs, and open them up to a whole new world of federal elections violations. The goals are good but as far as the details go, it needs a lot of work. zoux fucked around with this message at 18:45 on Apr 20, 2021 |
