I was trying to setup a quick and dirty gaming computer for my brother to play on for a few, but I couldn't get it to boot at all. Its a Pentium E2140 (dual core Conroe) on an ASUS p5vd2-mx se. It boots fine with the old Radeon HD 5450 I have in it, and with a brand new power supply. After plugging in any of my newer cards, it just doesn't boot. Including two different brands of Geforce 710s, or the 1080 I was trying to use. All cards are fully working.

My understanding was PCIe was fully compatible backward and forward, is that the case?

Make sure you're on the latest motherboard BIOS.

That machine is old enough that it might not like newer GPUs.
