Because it never leaves its bedroom, no one has ever seen this poster's real face.
you might not have heard of him, but chance are you've heard some of his work

quote:

His most successful chart singles include Bonnie Tyler's "Total Eclipse of the Heart", Air Supply's "Making Love Out of Nothing at All", Meat Loaf's "I'd Do Anything for Love (But I Won't Do That)", the Sisters of Mercy's "This Corrosion" and "More", Barry Manilow's "Read 'Em and Weep", Celine Dion's "It's All Coming Back to Me Now"

if you've ever wondered why "Total Eclipse of the Heart" or "Paradise By the Dashboard Lights" were such unabashedly over-the-top bangers, you have this guy to thank

Steinman was known for his maximalist, operatic approach to music, once self-deprecatingly joking "If there was a market out there for 10-minute Wagnerian explosive anthems sung by a 350-pound guy with a huge voice, then we had that market cornered."

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9X_ViIPA-Gc

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lcOxhH8N3Bo

Steinman was also a playwright- he collaborated with andrew lloyd webber on the musical stage version of Whistle Down the Wind (a classic British film about children who discover a fugitive in their attic and mistake him for jesus christ), and, in 2017, he realized his "dream project," a musical based on Meat Loaf's debut album (which he originally produced and which remains one of the best-selling albums of all time); Bat Out of Hell: The Musical opened at no-bullshit the manchester opera house

here are some cool lyrics of his that I found:

quote:

The entire city is burning

You can see the flames, like the inside of a mad jukebox

Lost boys stalk the streets with those jungle markings on their chests

Barbarians prowl in shadows, their heads rocking with rodents

Motorcycles reproduce in nocturnal alleys groaning with greasy pleasure

And they've blown up the YWCA like a giant balloon

And sent it out to sea full of screaming, lovely, lonely girls
and a spotify playlist in case you want to listen to more of his work

overall, Steinman was a unique voice that over a 52 year career left an indelible mark on popular music
cheers to a real one

Jim Steinman was about 95%, if not more, of what made Meat Loaf successful, and to repay him Meat Loaf sued him in the 2000's. Bat Out of Hell, both the song and the album, remains a rock and roll classic, and he was also one of the musical producers behind Streets of Fire, one of my favorite films. He'll be missed.

Oh, and on Bat Out of Hell II he made a Doors parody song titled Wasted Youth that I'm sure some SA posters will get a kick out of.

We'll take our chances...
Jim Steinman was 100% the brains behind Meat Loaf. Anything he did without him was mediocre at best. Guy knew how to produce a song like no other. Was also incredible at being able to recycle songs into hits. Think he had a core 20 original songs that he'd just remake endlessly until one became a smash hit (It's All Coming Back to Me Now is a prime example of this).

He also did his own stuff including this amazing music video:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K0K_RY34z8U

Will never be another like him, for better or worse.

EDIT: Seriously, his solo stuff is a treasure stuff of camp, I mean. LOOK AT THIS:

"I couldn't stop saying aloud how miscast Jim Carrey was!"
Bat Out of Hell II was my first rock album that I discovered on my own (via happening to tune in to Entertainment Tonight when they were doing a profile on Meat and his comeback, and that's OK because that show was actually worth watching back then), and holy poo poo did it blow my 10 year-old mind which had been raised on a diet of 50s-60s oldies via my dad's mixtapes (which had no Beatles songs for some reason) and the Beach Boys, with my mom providing her vinyl copy of Michael Jackson's Thriller. (I wouldn't actually be familiar with the vast majority of "80s music" until I started my my late teens.) Yeah, the songs were extraordinarily long and lyrically more akin to musical numbers, but who gives a poo poo when the music is that good? Well, a year or two passes and adolescent me, without being able to put it into words, needed to find music that was a bit less campy and overwrought. But I never stopped revisiting that record. There's nothing else like it and the first, and it turned out that Meat and Jim had a bit of a Kirby/Lee relationship in that they brought out the best in each other and never hit their creative apexes again when they stopped working together. Steinman wasn't a singer (though he tried) and Meat was neither a songwriter nor able to find hired guns to fill Jim's shoes.

And yes, Streets of Fire is very underrated. As is Walter Hill as a filmmaker but this ain't CD. Just remember that after The Warriors he wanted to make "a rock n' roll fairy tale" action movie and Joel Silver, God bless him, made it happen. Steinman being involved was icing on that cake.

I think of Sisters Of Mercy first when I hear Jim Steinman's name, but obviously that is like the thing he is third-most famous for (at best), so for anyone who does not know what it sounds like when an English goth rock band at the peak of their brilliance joins forces with the world's campiest epic songcraftsmith, you should hear these:

It is also hilarious that Meat Loaf eventually covered "More," bringing some sort of Steinman circle to a close

I was probably the only Sisters fan that thought Floodland was absolutely terrible, and doubly so after the perfection of First and Last and Always. When I found out that "the Meatloaf guy" produced the album it all made sense (well, that and the "band" only being Eldritch and some new session musicians at that point).
