Yeah the TCL interface is perfect for older folks. Samsungs (especially the cheaper ones) are terrible and laggy frustrating pieces of crap.

I just bought a new tv for the first time in 12 years and lemme tell ya, tilting/picking up this thin screen was absolutely nervewracking. I felt like it might break right in half and I would've cried. The LG TV stand installation needed the tv to lay face first on a table (off the ground) and tilting it back upright just kinda felt like there wasn't any way of doing it without putting pressure on it. Thankfully it's in place and intact.

I watched Fury Road when I got my B9. It is an awesome movie to watch on an OLED. My friend recently got the Sony A90J. We watched an episode of this wildlife documentary series on Apple TV +. It's narrated by Paul Rudd. That also looked amazing.

I bought an LG C1 today, it's really something else seeing it after using a TCL for 3 years. I'm not a big fan of the OS though, the home screen is cluttered and full of stuff I don't use. The pointy remote is also not great, but you can also use use the arrows so that's fine, wish it lit up in the dark though. Overall, well worth the money. I was going to ust get a CX, but I got the 55" C1 for $1500, so only $200 more than the CX they were selling. My first thing I am doing is streaming a baseball game on the xfninity app lol. I'm going to try some PC games when I get my HDMI 2.1 cable though.

I think it is time to move along my 2010 55” panny plasma. I’m thinking 65” C1 or some 75” TCL. The tv is used many hours a day. Housewife show on during the day. Family shows and movies evenings. I don’t know exactly how many hours but conservatively 8 maybe 12. Haters feel free to hate. Not a ton of gaming but some. No CNN with tickers but plenty of things with logos in the corner. Room is bright but doesn’t get direct sun. 8-10 feet depending on how far back we push the chairs. I think 75” like totally fills the space (weird diagonal wall, and yes it’s above the weird diagonal fireplace but it’s the only place where a modern TV could go (there was an alcove next to the fireplace meant for a TV back in the early 90s but it’s now shelves and a small AV rack). Am I crazy thinking that a 75” TCL is the right call even though I know the picture quality of the OLED is the only thing that gets close to my plasma experience? Edit: I’m also hoping to keep this TV and the likely accompanying receiver and other upgrades for a decade if possible

I would say Hisense, but I'm not a fan of Google Assistant (it's poo poo). If your parents use something else for smart content, then don't worry about it. The calibration menus are nicely straightforward though, and Chromecast is built in.

They currently use a 2014 fire stick with a 37" TV they got 9 years ago, so I think either TV will be a big upgrade. Biggest concerns are picture quality and reliability of the TV. They don't use Alexa, Google assistant, etc.

The backlights on my LG 43UK6300PLB has started failing - big blue splotches everywhere and it's out of warranty. It's fine for the time being, playing games you don't really notice it but I'm looking to upgrade. That said I'm looking for something that can both make good use of a PS5 (with HDMI arc for my speakers) and be less than 47" because otherwise it won't actually fit. OLED is 1) too expensive and 2) I'm afraid of burn-in so does anyone have a recommendation? I'm saying something up to maybe £700 but I'm in the UK so I don't know if that'll make things more difficult for a suggestion. Thanks y'all

The smallest OLED is the LG 48 inch CX/C1, so you can stick to LCD's. That being said size wise after 43 inch TV's most go to 48 inches. So that's something to consider.

hey all, I'm considering replacing 2 of the TVs in my house. TV in my bedroom is a 8 year old 50" Vizio M Series that has got some dead pixels on it and is starting to have some screen flickering when it starts up. I sit far enough away from it that I don't notice the dead spots on it and after the first couple of minutes its on the flickering isn't really an issue. I primarily use this to watch some TV on before bed, sometimes a late football or basketball game. I'm thinking about replacing it with a TCL Series 4 or Vizio V-Series. The other is my primary TV. I currently have a 65" Vizio P Series from 2015 (P652ui-B2). This TV is generally used for regular TV watching, larger get togethers/parties, the occasional sports event. The room its in is fairly long and somewhat narrow so I sit a good distance away from the TV. The space where the TV is now is kind of a natural nook between the fireplace and the front wall of the house. Its set back from the windows so it doesn't get a lot of glare, but can get a little on sunny days in the afternoon. Ideally I'd like to put a 75" TV in this space. I'm looking at the TCL 5 series or 6 series, local dimming and the price point tends to sell me on these. No gaming or anything like that is being done on this TV. I have a set up with an OLED TV that I use primarily for gaming/movie watching and regular football watching/mental breakdown having. I've looked at the Hisense models which are in the same price realm as the TCL and the Sony's which are more expensive, and the Vizio which I've had great luck with in the past but I don't know about their current quality but I'm open to suggestions.

I've not had great experiences with Hisense in the past. Nothing wrong with the panels, but lots of firmware bugs, crashing, settings not saving.

I’ve had my C6 for almost five years now and it sees all sorts of usage including a lot of video game time and sports and doesn’t have any issues. These things don’t need to be babied. Just use it like any other TV and don’t leave it on CNN 12 hours a day for years and you’ll be fine.

Moved in to my new place, the projector definitely doesn't fit here, so it's time to get a new TV now. Here's my old 52LG60 "Scarlet" for a size reference, the main chassis is 50.4" wide and 35.3" tall .  The wall space I have to work with is more or less exactly the width of an 85" screen, but I can't justify the price of good TVs at that size so right now my debate is to get one of the nicest LCDs in the 75" range or a 65" LG CX. The 52" just doesn't cut it. The LG of course is an OLED and the smaller size would allow me to mount the front speakers beside the screen instead of under it, but the extra 10 inches of diagonal is hard to argue against when standing in front of them. Also if I get the OLED is the Best Buy warranty worth it? Supposedly it covers burn-in, so the 5 year option seems like it might not be a bad idea if it means I can just use the hell out of it without worry and get the panel replaced a few years down the road. I could splurge and make the LG 77 work too, but it'd have to be without the addon warranty because that'd take it to almost $4000. edit: I bought the 65" CX. gently caress this is a beautiful TV. wolrah fucked around with this message at 04:24 on Apr 22, 2021 |

Is this where I can whine that our perfectly nice Philips Android TV just updated its UI to be more Googly and now Demi Lovato is living rent free on the top third of the home screen? Still need to dive into the settings but assuming I can't edit it out, any suggestions? Pihole?

For my Android TV, I turned off auto-updates and just update everything manually except for the Android TV Home app. In app options there should be a setting to uninstall recent updates to roll back to a previous version. That's something I had to do a few weeks after getting my TV and it auto-updated to a home screen filled with ads. Umm, crap. I haven't updated anything about my system since around 2014 and now I have this gorgeous OLED paired with a 1080P blu-ray player. What're the normal suggestions for an up-to-date player and sound system? Edit: reading up on it more (I'm a noob in these parts) and it seems like most people can't tell the difference unless you're really close to the TV. For the BluRay player the general best value as far as reviews and influencers go is the Panasonic UB-820 if you plan on buying UHD discs or taking advantage of HDR. As for sound, it depends on how much you want Dolby Atmos. You can still get by with 5.1/7.1 though.

I was under the impression the UB-820 is only necessary if you want Dolby vision, as otherwise the UB-420  is nearly identical for playback and upscaling. Also, seems like it might be refresh time for UHD players, as they all seem to be going out of stock.

What does everyone do for surge protection for your wall mounted TVs? I know that surge receptacles exist but the best rated one I can find is for 720 joules vs a cheapo power strip I found that is rated at 250. Since they're all MOV style and need to be replaced regularly anyway, seems like the $11 power strip is the way to go. However, I dunno how I'm going to stick it behind my TV since the mounts I'm looking at all seem to only have about an inch clearance from wall to TV.

Main thing I have is a box on the wall next to my outdoor panel, then regular surge protectors in the house. Lots of lightning here, I don’t think the indoor ones would offer any protection against those really.
