The only way you're going to get DC admitted as a state is if somehow five Democratic Senators not only shift and support DC statehood, but also vote to kill off the filibuster. That's not going to happen. The obvious compromise solution is to make both DC a state and make Puerto Rico a state at the same time. Puerto Rico tends to vote Republican, but they're also not white. PR is more complicated. There's actually two bills that are currently being considered right now—one that would fund a "this time for realsies" direct referendum on statehood that would result in automatic admission if successful, and a "Self-determination" bill that would fund a convention that would explore more options (Statehood, various changes in territorial status, independence, etc.) before sending out various recommendations out to be voted on. The argument for the Self-Determination Bill is straightforward—it allows PR to explore the widest variety of options available, not just statehood. On the other hand, it would be a longer, more deliberative process with an unclear timeline and muddied results, that may ultimately end as "mostly the same but slightly different" status for PR. The pure Statehood bill also has the argument backing it that PR just had a statehood referendum that passed with a clear majority back in November with relatively high turnout—so why bother wasting time when we already know what the majority of Puerto Ricans want? Anyway, these two bills are battling in committee, one will eventually be chosen, and will probably pass—unlike DC statehood, PR isn't a slam-dunk +2 D Senators, so the statehood bills already have some Republican support and might not be filibustered. So, that's where things are right now.

Passing along more information about that "missing" Indonesian submarine from the OSHA thread of all places: Safe working depth for that class of submarine is apparently 250m. Estimated ocean depth where it went down ranges from 600 to 700m. Yeah, they're almost certainly all dead and we just haven't found the debris yet. Best hope at this point is that someone's sonar picked up the implosion noises.

It's not impossible that Putin is going to try a limited direct invasion to step on Ukraine, restore water to Crimea, and undercut Biden at a time when he's under a lot of domestic pressure for how he handled Navalny and pissed off about Biden calling him out. It's not inevitable, but the folks I know in Ukraine are more freaked out and more prepared for a conflict escalation than they have been in years.

Russia doesn't normally make this much noise though about a coming attack, and there's been a lot of noise and threats from them lately. You can move a lot of equipment around if you have a lot in storage and don't have to move it very far. Doesn't mean the russians are actually mobilising anything expensive to deploy. I can't tell what they're doing yet but they want us to look at it.

It would be possible to be alive then yes. But I do not remember how deep our rescue craft can operate. Test depth is the the deepest a sub can go and be able to emergency blow and get to the surface without propulsion. Crush depth is always deeper than that but not by a huge amount. Wikipedia says test depth for the class is 500m. Wikipedia also says that Germany sets the test depth at half the design depth which would actually mean the crush depth should be greater than 1000m? Is there better info on all this?
