Wasn't PL rumored to have a heroin/opiate problem at one point?

Yeah, not even in the same league as grooming underage girls.

Hell, sometimes opiate addictions make people into better artists.

well why not

Yeah I have heard rumors that PL has a pretty solid opium addiction. As in, a photographer posting that as soon as Derek walked on the tour bus the first thing he'd say was "Where is the H?". Grim stuff.

I'm pretty sure Illenium had a heroin problem at one point and overcame it. Awake was one of my favorite albums the year it came out. So many goddamn earworms on that thing.

Well this turned dark in a hurry. Let's pull it out by posting about women in EDM. I'll start with Jen Scaturro, who mainly does additional music for TV but has done a bunch of remixing and production down the years.

Saw her play Coda as basically the last set I caught before I moved out of Philly. Just amazing music, and these mixtapes are my favorite thing to toss on when I’m getting hosed up at my house with friends.

More people going on record about terrible poo poo Bassnectar did, the grooming of course, stealing productions, outright ripping songs directly off, stiffing collaborators on contracts, etc. Some of this I knew about, some of it I didn't. Long read.

I saw ill.gates play a very small wook dive bar, probably acoustically the single worst sounding venue in Philly, but he played for like 50 people and it was dope as hell. I’ve also seen him at Burning Man like 15 times, awesome guy good vibes.

Chief McHeath

A bunch of my friends back home worked really hard to establish a thriving EDM scene in our city of ~500K. They got ill to play a show, took him during the day to check out some local spots, hung out after the show, and multiple times he's messaged them like "hey I'm playing Saturday two hours away, you got anywhere I can throw down Thursday or Friday?" Not to promoters or clubs directly, but to the people building grassroots, who then go to the people they know at the venues.

Super cool guy.

I think Squarepusher's stuff is generally considered 'breakcore', or possibly where the confusion comes in, 'IDM' - 'Intelligent Dance Music', a term I personally find so offensively arrogant that I just say 'breakcore' instead. Similar artists include Aphex Twin and Venetian Snares, although Squarepusher's tunes were always on the more musical and less downright-abrasive side, compared to those two. I think he's a legit jazz bassist (he had another experimental project with a band called Shobaleader One, and I think it was him playing bass), which certainly explains how his sound retains a decidedly organic and funky element while still being based around heavily-syncopated breakbeat samples.

Haha what a buffoon, everyone knows Shpongle is Goa/psybient.

I used to listen to a LOT of Shpongle. They were like, my answer to Tool. I felt so enlightened, but having gone back to listen to their stuff again recently, I find most of it to be REALLY embarrassing. Even some Aphex Twin tunes (any of the breakcore numbers on Drukqs) have that quality, but Squarepusher's music seems to have held its character against the test of time.

It is him playing the Bass for certain, he's redic talented at the Bass as well as other stuff, and his brother is an amazing (i dunno Braindance? Acid?) DJ too. I get confused which thread would care about this, would techno be better?

And Porter's first album in 7 years comes out at midnight tonight

Porter Robinson's new album is as if the Wolf Children OST had become EDM. Beautiful album through and through, but I was personally hoping for a few more dance tracks because the singles so far have been great. But I've no complaints about the album whatsoever - Beautiful sound and beautiful production.

I listened to the new Porter last night and wasn't crazy about it, though I'll have to give it another listen soon. Maybe I just wasn't in the right headspace for it last night, but it certainly didn't grab me like Worlds did.

Here's that new Rezz x deadmau5 collab which is pretty dope:

Yvette Young's set, though not EDM at all, was my favorite of the day so far. Porter sure knows how to put together an eclectic festival!

This Boys Noize set is making me want to dance.

e: I had no idea who Swardy was but this set is really creative, what the hell
