I’ve arrived at the two best episodes of Korra season 2, a little past the season midpoint. But the previous episodes really weren’t so bad. Korra is too impulsive which undoes a bit of her growth from season 1 but everything else seems pretty natural. Either I judged this season too harshly the first time around or it’s gonna really disappoint me in the back half.

I have been subjecting myself to some really bad animated animal movies the last few days First, Ice Age (competent but bland) Then, Open Season (has some enjoyably goofy sensibility but is mostly bad) Tonight I’m watching Alpha and Omega I’m thinking Norm of the North tomorrow

It’s loving bad The animation is just terrible, look up a trailer to see what I mean. It looks like a direct to DVD/streaming reject, not a theatrical movie The wolves howling is represented by singing (wordlessly) and it leads to some unintentionally hilarious moments https://youtu.be/k6eXuHmQoiM

At least in the before times there seems to be a steady market for mediocre crap for kids, especially if you look enough like Disney/Pixar/Dreamworks stuff that tuned-out parents don't care about the difference.

Either they're located where they get a tax write off for underperforming movies (Uwe Boll abused this until Germany closed their loophole), it's so cheaply made that even a modest showing is enough, or it's essentially money laundering - which would combine with the second point, make just enough money to make their dirty money look legit.

(although most of the rest of the cast is the writer/director's family)

What's hilarious about the Kid Lovecraft movies is they have a huge message of tolerance and anti-bigotry, which given what we know of the real H.P Lovecraft...

Y'all are overthinking it with the kids movies. There's only so many Disney, Pixar and Dreamworks movies to go around, especially in cinemas, and the target market are parents who don't care about the movie quality and don't expect to pay attention to it as long as it keeps the kids quiet for a while. Same as those weird creepy YouTube videos and tie-in video games.Robindaybird posted:What's hilarious about the Kid Lovecraft movies is they have a huge message of tolerance and anti-bigotry, which given what we know of the real H.P Lovecraft... Yes, Lovecraft was very racist along with being a very sad, messed up person who had a horrible upbringing and early death.

Yeah I have no idea how this stuff gets financed. The studio behind these films are in BC, Canada, which has really high tax credits to help with productions. From what I can find on their website, the studio actually does exist there with images of Canadians working on these films, but it's insanely bad quality compared to any of the other tv studios in town. I have a feeling they're outsourcing a lot of this to India and possibly only have an animation director and a few fix animators in their Vancouver branch. Aside from the tax credits there probably is money laundering involved.
