Its a noir slice of life anime about a middle aged man who is a cab driver. Also highly likely to be mentally ill and possibly a kidnapper Characters: Odokawa: The cab driver mc Shirakawa: I knew this dame was trouble the second i walked into her office. An alpaca like that, in a neighbourhood like this? Gouriki & Kakihana: Finally some representation in anime, the mc's middle aged loser friends Nikaidou, Rui & Ichimura, Shiho & Miya, Yuki (or is it??) & Imai: Three idols, a fan, and a possible kidnapping. are they really who they say they are? Dobu: A wanted criminal, but is that all? Daimon & Daimon: Good, bad, no matter what when they stop your taxi its trouble Shibagaki & Baba: Always on the radio, but who they are I don't know. For these Homo Sapiens I hope their popularity will grow Davincie fucked around with this message at 11:13 on Apr 16, 2021 |

the character chart is a bit ahead of the show, we haven't learned a few of those yet this is really good so far. reminds me a bit of durarara structurally but using the taxi for the 'baton passes' so everything stays centered on our unreliable MC.

i get sort of a Yakuza vibe from it too but that might be because my reference pool is fairly limited the web of intrigue and long, melancholy conversations do call Yakuza's story scenes to mind, though, minus the constant punch-ups and exploding helicopters

This show turned out to be exactly what I hoped for at first glance, so I'm pretty pleased with it I don't know what it is about cute talking animals and gritty urban drama. But it's a winning formula.

furries and noir do seem to go together often. this, blacksad, beastars (when it's not being totally loopy), and who could forget chicken police? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xGo3312N28A

This promises to be interesting. I like that it doesn't seem like it will rely on plot twists all that much, despite the intrigue-laden backstory; and the artstyle is great. Request for OP, could you add the names of the characters? I keep forgetting those, probably because it's so easy to think of them as "the alpaca", "the boar" and so on

I really hope Kakihana isn't about to get mugged. I didn't expect this show to be this good. Also do we have two concurrent "high schooler runaway living with a grown-rear end man who doesn't want her" animes this season? The Islamic Shock fucked around with this message at 02:44 on Apr 20, 2021 |

LostRook posted:I suspect he's about to be scammed since I'm pretty sure half a dozen Yakuza substories start like this. Totally some sort of honey trap going on. The Shiba Inu faced guy is Shiyo's manager, who apparently has mob ties? I'm guessing they either want his (fake) money, or to use him for his connection to Odokawa. Judging by the narrative's direction my guess would be the latter. Or maybe manager just thinks Kakihana is a huge creep for trying to get with a teenager and he brought his yakuza friend to have a 'talk' with him. He wouldn't be wrong! I'm also leaning towards all the animal people being in Odokawa's head. The conversation with the doctor that went: "What do I look like to you?" "A gorilla," "Well you aren't wrong," seems a huge clue. It's just not a conversation they would have if the doctor was actually a gorilla. That and a nurse laughing at being called an Alpaca. Maybe the car crash the policeman flashed back to was the cause of his mental break?

What's neat about the flashbacks is the latest one happened with the cop brothers and everything is normal, there's a lot of details you can pick up on and it's kinda clear what happened. Compare it to the two that happened with Odokawa the artstyle is completely different, it's very chaotic looking, barely any detail beyond vague shapes, gonna be honest it's very unnerving. I love perspective tricks like this.

I love that this is a series made up mostly of people having conversations, and yet there is this undercurrent of dread that I can't shake off. Also Kakihana is 1000% being scammed.

I'm glad that Odokawa isn't too much of a stoic hardass. He can have a laugh and worry over his potential love interest being taken hostage by a baboon with a gun.

I've heard multiple people and several content creators straight up call this Tarantino-esk. Goon opinion: Yes or No?

There's a sizable, interrelated cast following several plot threads that will presumably all be related in the end and a lot of quirky conversations so it's a fairly apt description.

i don't get that from it, sounds more like a case of people grabbing the easiest reference point for live action crime drama, since the dialogue is so un-anime-like
