Nah, it was never all that respected, because all the graphical whizbangs never made up for the fact that the dev suite / editor was a pile of garbage compared to unreal or other non-licensed engines. The cost of being hard to work with is generally not worth the graphical power. For the most part the people who used cryengine, even back then, were picking it because it was cheaper than unreal. There were exceptions, but the track record of high-profile games made with cryengine is so 50/50, I'd bet that "how many ex-crytek people do you have on staff" was a big predictor of success. The reason unity was able to compete so strongly with unreal that Epic started giving it away for free isn't because unity is equal in engine power (it's not). It's because unity has a really good & usable editor, great integration with VS, and is just generally easy to make a game with. If you have to spend all your effort on just the "make a game" part, you have little time left to make your game good.

It is doubtful that ships as small as the average Star Citizen ship would be involved in interstellar transport. Why would you build a cargo ship that is the size of a delivery truck? You would see a ton of mega freighters moving huge amounts of goods. Probably with detachable cargo pods. You show up at the planet and drop a pod or two and pick a pod or two and keep going so you don’t waste time (and money). The planet would have infrastructure to move cargo to and from orbit and load the pods. The only stuff you would see in those tiny ships would be high-value luxury goods being shipped for the ultra-wealthy. It is the equivalent of chartering a private plane to fly yourself a Tesla. Everything else is being moved in bulk. Star Citizen is not good at imagining the future of cargo. The entire economy is somehow run by fedex delivery trucks.

Thing is that realism doesn't really enter into it, the whole space trucker idea is basically a fancy version of the Age of Sail where you take your sloop to distant shores to trade for exotic spices, though a lot of authors tend to forget that.

They probably lack imagination, which might also explain why they refuse to accept any game that isn't wasting millions of polygons on a random coffee cup. While most people would let their imagination paper over minor shortcuts and enjoy the central aspects of a game even if it was 16-bit 2D art, some of the more extreme commandos seem unable to do this.

Star citizen feels about as developed as when I was like 11 and modified quake files so the shotgun shot 1000 pellets. Since all the money is donations they cannot be sued, correct? I'd guess a lot of those donations are going to some serious lawyers.

You can be sued for failing to deliver on a Kickstarter or similar (well, technically you can be sued for anything) but for a suit to go anywhere you really have to have taken the money and run. CIG are making something, even if it is half-baked, so I strongly doubt there'll be any real threat of legal action even if the backers do start to turn on the company.

Apparently you can earn credits, it's still fairly unstable so there's a good chance you'll lose them. I think you are supposed to be able to mine, deliver/recover boxes from place to place and fight other ships. Last free play I spent 4 hours trying to find and actual game but couldn't.
