I’ve had RSI issues over the years, and for a long time could only use keyboards like the Microsoft sculpt. Finally, after way too much trying different key switches and maximizing the ergonomics of my desk monitor height I’ve discovered that the one keyboard that’s mechanical that actually does work for me is any with cherry MX browns. The key switch which most keyboard enthusiasts Scoff at. So yeah, The hobby attracts a lot of weirdos. Similar to watch people, who think there really is a huge difference between a $10,000 Rolex and they are basically identical to a knock off for $500. Truth of the matter is I’d say the best mass marketed keyboard that you can get for around $100 is the MX keys. They make a Mac version. The key travel is not gonna hurt your hands, it is more satisfying in my mind than a magic keyboard. It can work with a dongle, or with Bluetooth. Easy switching between three devices. I just wish they made a TKL version of it.

I went through school exclusively using Macs (up through graduating law school). As a consequence I feel their style of keyboards are the "standard" for me and I am most comfortable pushing scissor keys as a consequence. I really don't like big keys and I loving hate mechanical keyboards, and everyone recommends them but they look terrible/garish and are usually loud and the keystrokes just don't "feel" right because my brain broke. I tried to use it and I really just hated it. I have gone through so many keyboards trying to get a good one for my PC that does the following: looks/feels like a Mac keyboard, Windows key, backlit, wireless/wired, and has media control buttons. For the media keys I usually download sharpkeys to have the default behavior for the Fn keys that I'm hoping for (I don't want to hold Fn + F11 or whatever to increase volume, I just want to press F11). Out of the 8 keyboards I've purchased in the last 3 years, I bought 3 Matias brand keyboards, 2 of which 100% broke within a year of owning them and don't even power on or connect at all, or they drop connections constantly and need to be re-paired 1-3 times a week or so. I also bought a series of cheap keyboards of Amazon that are sort of okay, and definitely last longer than the Matias ones but they all are missing one of the features I want or they have goofy poo poo like HUGE PRINTING on the letters. I also bought slim Logitech keyboards that are very.... "mushy". Apple makes really good keyboards, man. Recently I bought 2 keyboards from Best Buy: A Compact Microsoft Designer Keyboard and a Microsoft Bluetooth Keyboard. The designer keyboard is perfect and is the best mac keyboard-like keyboard for PC I have ever owned and I have gone through a shitload of these motherfuckers. It's the only one with a stable BT connection and that actually feels like a mac keyboard for PC. I hope you enjoyed reading about me losing nearly $500 looking for a keyboard that reminds me of Mac keyboards because apparently only Apple and Microsoft make good keyboards for my stupid loving brain

I own and love the Microsoft Modern Keyboard. It is almost literally the Apple Keyboard for Windows. It even has discount knockoff Touch ID that works 50% of the time (Windows Hello is very very stupid). It's well made, restrained and utilitarian in design, lovely to type on, and has some well chosen shortcut keys.

I'm going to hopefully ask here because the ipad thread was murky- I'm going to try and upgrade my 2019 iPad Pro to the new M1 model next month. Does apple take trade-in units in the physical stores at all, or is it mail-in only? I want to go that route because I also have a pile of apple gift cards I want to put towards it at the same time, and handing over the ipad as I pick up the new one would make things a lot easier.

I think you’re getting mechanical switches, which feel different than scissor or dome keyboards. Not everyone needs a numpad all the time (example, most laptops). Thankfully if you need a numpad there’s plenty of options out there too! Also I would argue that among Mac users keyboards with number pads are probably less common than keyboards without them!

Every time my dad whinges to me about something windows 10 did or some flaw of his crappy windows laptop I try and convince him that all his problems would go away if he just bought a goddamn MacBook already; and every time it's like slamming into a brick wall because he refuses to use a computer that doesn't have a numpad.

I really like the old apple keyboards that had alps switches.  I even like the "chicklet" version of the Apple extended keyboard II. Honestly just looking at it now I kind of prefer it. I used to have a II GS laying around but I'm pretty sure my mom threw it away because it is not in her attic where I left it... Something like a decade ago I found a keyboard made by Ducky that had green alps switches that were very similar in feel to the Orange alps switches used in the apple keyboard. A quick search actually found the same model and it's still for sale! They also offer black alps switches but I have no idea what those are like... They are not bad (unlike the butterfly keys) but they aren't nearly as good as the older model. Weirdly enough, I think the magic keyboards on the new laptops are as good as the older laptops. But for an external board, the older ones I think feel just slightly better.

I have a Ducky One, a Magic Keyboard and the second-gen Apple Wireless Keyboard. The Ducky feels nice to type on, but the experience of using it in MacOS is bad. It requires a lot of config to get it working properly, and really, new keycaps to label things as to what they do. The Apple Wireless switches are OK, but it lacks a numpad ( i like them, just for work ) and has really bad arrows. The Magic Keyboard feels good, works flawlessly in MacOS, has a mega battery, proper arrow keys and a numpad. It. Just. Works.

One of each were for my HTPC at the time, with short keyboard + trackpad. The MS one was special, I forget exactly but I think keyboard input blocked the trackpad (and/or the other way around), with a noticeable timeout before it'd allow input again. One thing with the full length Apple ones is their numpad layout, instead of the usual double height plus key it's normal height, and have an equal key fit in the extra space. Not a huge deal but it's nice for doing simple formulas while doing number entry. There's some newer Bluetooth number pads that have the layout...but the one I tried was useless cause the range (2018 Mac mini Bluetooth ) and had no wired fallback.

iMac preorders are up. I guess it shouldn't be a surprise but I think it's outrageous that they are charging an extra $200 for 8 gigs of RAM. And $200 for another 256gig SSD space. $200 should get you a 2TB nvme drive.
