I mean in principle GAAS games aren't that far removed from a Diablo-like, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. The 6 levels of difficulty for replaying the same levels though... makes it sound like a short campaign with a boring grind while waiting for new content that may or may not actually appear :smith:

Has anyone tried dualling from Swashbuckler to Fighter? It looks like going Swashbuckler 10 -> Fighter is a good way of getting a Fighter with more utility and some extra baked-in AC and offensive bonuses, but I'm not sure if it's actually worth the time and effort in the long run.

By level 12 or so your fighter should only be getting hit on 20's anyways. It's perfectly doable and better than several single class builds, but the main reason would be you don't want to bother with sneak attacks and don't want an extra character for traps/unlocking.

Thief->Fighter is not optimal by any means but I've done it, it certainly works fine so I'd say go ahead.

In terms of swashbuckler specifically, one of the main advantage of swashbucklers are their proficiency points, which is redundant if you plan to dual into fighter. So over a base thief you're looking at gaining a +3 to hit and damage in exchange for no backstab. Personally I think backstab is the main benefit of fighter/thief builds but it depends how you want to play it.

Also ten levels of thief is a lot to invest. If you're looking to add utility to your fighter I think you only need like 6 levels to get 100 in find traps and open locks. So again you're sacrificing quite a lot of XP in exchange for that third + to hit and damage.

You might've already thought of all this, but that's my rundown anyway. TL;dr +3 to hit and damage is nothing to scorn but you lose backstab which sucks.

You could make the argument that every reverse duel class is to get some useful bonuses/utility for a fighter, but the base fighter class is complete poo poo compared to the kits and unless you use Shadowkeeper to duel to a kit there's not really a point. Swashbuckler though doesn't get any inherent per day abilities which makes it less attractive then the others.

Maybe if you max lockpick/find traps right away so you don't need a main thief but then you're taking off armor every time you need to use thief skills (unless that's the G3 mod and not base game) so it becomes a chore to for your thief needs.

Other options
Cleric-fighter: needing 15 wisdom for a fighter, pretty lame but some level 1-3 buffs are always helpful
Druid-Fighter: needing 15 wisdom AND 15 charisma, literally useless unless for RP reasons
Mage-Fighter: armor would impede casting, no point

Otherwise, berserker, kensai, dwarven defender, all could be duel to a base thief/mage/cleric and probably be far superior to a single class equivalent.

Fair enough. The primary draw to me seems that Thief 10 only needs 160k, which means in the long run you're losing 1 level of post-9 Fighter for 4 extra proficiency slots, 100 Find Traps / Open Locks and >100 Pick Pockets on your PC, as well as +3 AC and +2 Hit/Damage.

The primary drawbacks to me seem to be needing 750k to reactivate your Thief levels, some slight weapon restrictions, and significantly worse HP.

I can see how it's not an optimal build in the sense it isn't a Fighter/Cleric or Fighter/Mage, though. I've never gotten the hang of backstabs, they require more micromanaging than I'm generally comfortable with.

For dual classing, most kits of Fighter have vanishingly small advantages after level 7 or 9. Which also means dualing into fighter is not optimal.

I missed that bit, probably because I install mods that let me dual class with any race and multiclass with any race and any race can be any class, but yeah, you generally have to be a dwarf to be a dwarven defender and dwarves can't dual class without mods.

I used to play Swashbuckler back in the day so I was considering doing something like this, but in the end I decided to to Berserker 9->Thief. I'll just use Imoen for my thieving skills, which is fine because it fits better into the canon anyway. The reason for this is access to Thief HLAs in BG2 which are supposedly a lot better than Fighter HLAs. Specifically I am building towards 2H Swords so that I can use Carsomyr with Use Any Item. I'm still at the beginning of BG1, but so far my Rage ability has already saved my butt a couple times. Its a super good ability.

Also by the time I get to BG2 I might decide I don't want to be a Thief at which point I could decide to be a mage or something, and still be just as optimal. I would just change my Weapon Specializations in some sort of editor.

Speaking of mods, I've really been enjoying the BG1NPC project. I played a bit without mods and ended up restarting with mods and the difference was immediately noticeable. It's fine depending on the author! Then you get to stuff like Xan's first sidequest with the gnome (just kill the drat gnome or ogres or you have to sit through a slow as hell magic trick that uncovers the whole fog of war for the map for no reason) and his annoyingly-difficult-for-a-low-level larger sidequest, and his interaction with Centeol where she's randomly like that because of an illusion he can just dispel with no trouble.

And Kivan, who only interrupts being the saddest sack in the universe to tell you the leaves are singing and invite you to ~dance with the leaves~

And ANYTHING with Faldorn, I couldn't even stand her long enough to clear the mines.

The mod has multiple authors and therein lies the problem. The authors are split up by character, so the quality varies.

Don't get me wrong, I always install it for the extra dialog, just be warned that the quality swerves.

Well, it is a mod to make them interject more! The sues are Xan and Kivan and maybe Coran. I don't get that impression from anyone else, but I don't attest to any romances.

The biggest DON'Ts are Xan and Faldorn. You can probably stomach Kivan for his actual quest content if you really want, it's mostly his random dialog that's just goddamn dire. The main five and Yeslick are good enough. Tiax, Garrick, Coran, and Eldoth/Skie are fine to take for their quests at least, though Coran's at the Firewine sucks and his baby extension is extremely hilarious in concept. You probably won't notice anything too wrong if you take Shar-Teel just long enough to talk to Angelo, just do not bang her, for the love of god, that one's infamous. Everyone else, I didn't notice anything egregious or I didn't take them along, but I also didn't bang anybody, and I hear that way lies madness. A lot of the characters are kinda one-note or boring anyway, like Ajantis, so more of them didn't really stick out.

I'd actually recommend Tiax for his extremely quick quest and Eldoth/Skie for the "fugitive in Baldur's Gate" portion of the plot. Makes SoD make a lot more sense, even though it didn't have either of those in mind. At least you'll remember who the hell they are that way. Skie gets a lot of dialog about her dad, obviously, and Skie/Eldoth can leave after you take out the assassins in the sewers so you can go back to whoever you want to end with. Quayle and Safana could have used something to make them a little more memorable when SoD/2 happens, but they didn't get it.

The party already chats between each other in original BG, it's just mostly canned audio so it doesn't leave an impact as much.
