Dude so much of it holds up. The screenplay is easy, simple and to the point. The characters all look like they’re supposed to and do their moves. The soundtrack is still full of bangers. The scorpion/ Cage fight scene is legit awesome. In fact most of the fight scenes are good to great. Goro is an amazing animatronic. The sets are all well done and interesting to look at. I really don’t know what you’re talking about.

Having just watched MK '95 again, it's amazing how that movie has about two games' worth of plot and still teases a sequel at a time when MK was barely a game series, while 2021 seems afraid to use even one whole plot despite having a kind of ridiculous amount of material for a videogame franchise to choose from.

People keep saying this, but how graphic is scorpion's revenge? If it's super gory I don't want it. The perk of live action is they have to hold back in some ways when animation doesn't have to. And we already have the game if we want animation. I love the lore but I had to tap out a couple games ago as graphics caught up.

But also, live action martial arts will always be superior to me for the weightiness. Plus the fun of seeing how they implement crazy moves into the real. It's not 1 to 1 but I'm always baffled when people link their favorite clone wars show fight, and it's just a weightless swinging and twirling dance.

I really couldn't get into the character design, or maybe it was the animation? Like the fighting was great but everything else felt static.7

Very graphic. Noggins get split, there are X-Ray moves, organs spill out, the whole deal.

My friends and I were all in our late teens/early twenties and we liked it just fine. It has a handful of memorable setpieces and a bangin' main theme and, most importantly, an extremely goofy good-natured vibe that sort of permutates the entire movie and makes even the uneven/less successful stuff tolerable.

If you think it's truly lovely, then to me all that it reveals is it pushes some button you have or you haven't seen a lot of genuinely lovely action movies.

Yeah, it's graphic. I think the first dead ninja gets his head split in half with a knife, just to give a quick indication. But at the same time, it's cartoony, so at least to me, it didn't seem as bad, despite the ridiculous ultra violence at times.

I think if you could handle the gore in MK 2021, you can handle the gore in Scorpion's Revenge, and while I wasn't super crazy about the animation/art style, Scorpion's Revenge definitely has the goods as a Mortal Kombat movie more than MK 2021 does.

As a kid Conquest was one of those shows where I kept waiting for it to get to the game characters and I think it got moved to a different channel before it did so I lost track of it. I'd love to see a retry at something like that. Exploring an older timeline of the MK series. One of the original tournaments. Do it Spartacus style.

Dudes get cut into multiple pieces horizontally like ten times and there’s at least a dozen people run through with the chain. Impalements, x-Ray broken bones and amputations feature heavily. It moves quickly so it doesn’t really linger on the shots but it’s still very gory.

I wasn’t joking about Scorpions kill count being near triple digits.

Let's get naked!
I really enjoyed the spit out of this movie. I don’t know quite what I expected going into it, but it ticked all the boxes for me for what I would want out of a new Mortal Kombat film.

Perhaps it was that I was with a group of good friends I hadn’t seen in awhile, or perhaps that that I saw it in a populated cinema, with a active audience that were laughing at the comedy bits and audibly disgusted at the gory bits, or the fact it was filmed in my home town so we could snigger and joke about the locales we recognised, but it definitely left me with a smile on my face.

I think most of the criticism in this thread is valid, but those moments didn’t particularly bother me personally, because as much as I adore Mortal Kombat, It’s always been a bizarre mix of immensely cheesy b movie with some self seriousness parts, and I felt the film did a half decent job of capturing that. Not being a big fan of remakes or adaptations, I’m glad it did something new with a new lead character / not focusing on the tournament, as otherwise it’s just be another retread of a plot we’ve seen before.

Perhaps we have been spoilt in the last decade or so with high budget Marvel films proving that adaptations can be both faithful to their source material and be well written, impressive films on movies in their own right. For me I’m still impressed by a video game movies that don’t suck.

They specifically said they wanted an Asian lead, which is pretty reasonable considering how much MK has copied from Asian culture.

I watched Scorpion's Revenge and it's about what I expected. 80ish minutes of fighting, some neat scenes and a lot of blood. It's honestly a bit much. Scorpion has a body count near the triple digits by the end of this thing, which is insane for the runtime. I'd recommend it to hear Joel McHale do Johnny Cage, and for a large serving of "Scorpion is so pissed off he busts out of hell".

I don't think it's fair to say it's better than the 2021 movie, but it is still worth checking out if you like the dumb pseudo-anime edgy vibe that Netflix Castlevania had. Why not, it's like 80 minutes and Johnny Cage's music is vaporwave for some reason.

I turned it off after like 30 mins.
Its a kids cartoon but with ultraviolence, I don't really get it.
Imo the animation wasnt good enough to make the fights interesting and it's almost all fights.

The new film is a lot better hands down

Mythologies honestly wouldn't be that awful a game if it didnt have instadeath pits (and a second level built around instadeath pits/moving platforms/wind fuckery). The transition between the platforming and the combat works pretty well (they're both bad mind, but its the badness of MK fighting + their first platformer, rather than from accomodating both).

Shaolin Monks slaps though.

I'm more interested in a move towards giving men the same sort of sexual expression as women receive in games (specifically, stop wearing pants at grandpa height to avoid The Devil's Belt), but its still pretty cool to see more variety in the MK women's roster than "floss bikinis" and "the MK ninjas, but sexy".

As far as Sheeva goes, there's some iterations of Goro that feel somewhat fair. I'm not mourning either of them putting on layers though.
