A couple years ago I went to a midnight screening of Streets of Fire at the Somerville Theater (greater Boston area). There was a really loud drunk dude who was very, very excited for the movie and as we were still settling down and getting seats he would do this high pitched scream: "STREETS OF FIIIIRRREEEE!!!" He kept doing this and even when the manager came out to introduce the film and promote the rest of the midnight series he kept interrupting, especially whenever the film's name was said.

So the lights go down and the Universal logo pops up and he yells "UNIVERSAAALLL!!" and it's like, oh no, he's not going to shut up. Through the first five minutes or so of the film he keeps yelling and it's getting to the point where I can hear his friends trying to tell him to shut up. I distinctly remember him yelling back at them "I'm just having an emotional reaction to the movie, man! Would you tell me not to cry at Titanic!?" So in short he doesn't stop. No more than 10 minutes into the movie I notice flashlights behind me (I'm in the front row, he's a few rows back on the aisle) and the cops are here. They tell him he needs to leave and like the genius he is he starts arguing with the cop.

And then it happened. "AM I BEING DETAINED!? AM I UNDER ARREST!? AM I UNDER ARREST AM I BEING DETAINED!?" The cops dragged him out and he got banned from the theater and oh my god did it make the loving night. I mean, gently caress cops and all but holy poo poo it was astounding to witness that.

The movie rules and some drunk rear end in a top hat was annoying for a bit but I treasure that loving memory. Like you said, you can't get that at home.

I have witnessed multiple incidents of drunk guys being tossed out of this specific theater. I wonder what it is, none of the bars around it are all that rowdy in my experience, people just like getting wasted and going to the movies in davis square i guess. Favorite theater, incidentally.

KC's in a weird position, when the Drafthouse closed (for many understandable reasons) apparently it left us without any first run theaters in the metropolitan area (I don't know when the Cinemark on the Plaza closed but apparently that's gone too). There's a lot of suburban sprawl mind you but for those of us without a car that sucks. I get my second dose in a couple weeks and I'll have nowhere to go.

Last I checked the story was that B&B were hoping to buy the space the Drafthouse was in but even if that goes through it'll be a while since they'd want to renovate to put in fancy reclining seats.

The Cinemark's been closed since 2019 I think. It sucks, I used to spend days off going to their $5 matinees. B&B will probably also have to deal with the basement that floods with poo poo whenever it rains.

Yeah the relative of expense of the theatres now compared to Nickelodeons and quarter shows and dollar theatres and all that in the past is a function of static wages for four decades plus all theatres being owned by 4 conglomerates buying movies from studios that are also owned by 4 conglomerates. Look at a country like India, where there are still a hundred studios and you can make a movie for nothing. It doesn’t cost poo poo and people go constantly

I went to see Snakes on a Plane with friends and one of them decided to take a bunch of robotussin and trip. He got so freaked out thinking the snakes were real and in the theater that me and another friend had to carry him out of the theater from the top section of seating.

It's just pregaming. When I lived in Oakland and Berkeley the easiest theaters to get to were the ones next to Cal and when I was still young enough to think going to a midnight release of a Marvel film would be fun I learned you don't do it on Cinco De Mayo (one of the first two Thors, don't remember which).

The Icelandic title for Jaws is "Ókindin" which means The Monster/Beast/Fiend/Ogre but the literal meaning is "The Unsheep" since "ó" means un and "kind" means sheep.

There should be theaters that only show micro budget indie movies. Tickets cost like three bucks, and you can go in and see the latest Len Kabasinski or Polonia Brothers film on the big screen.

Is Icelandic the right word for your language?

Hákarlinn (The Shark) sounds less scary is my guess and the literal translation Kjálkar (Jaws) or the less literal but more evocative Skolturinn (The Maw) are a bit unwieldy.

Icelandic translations of foreign movie titles are notoriously loose. For example Lethal Weapon is Tveir á toppnum (Two on Top) and From Dusk Till Dawn is Skitseiði jarðar (Scum* of the earth)

Oh yeah, most universities have screenings of films that are considered important for one reason or another but aren't popular enough that revival theaters would show them, and often they are open to the public and are either free or cost less than 10 bucks. Or at least they did before COVID.

That's a really good idea. There's no reason libraries couldn't build theaters and use them to screen movies so more people have access to art. Libraries are already getting involved in streaming services, why not expand it to a physical service.

Movie theatre chat reminded me of this article from December last year about how Japan's theatres stayed open. It's paywalled but the interesting part is this :

The Economist posted:

Researchers deployed Fugaku, the world’s fastest supercomputer, to model different situations. Crowded subways pose little risk, if windows are open and passengers wear masks, Mr Nishimura insists. Sitting diagonally, rather than directly across from each other can reduce the risk of infection by 75%. Movie theatres are safe, “even if viewers are eating popcorn and hot dogs”, Mr Nishimura says. While most cinemas in the West are closed, “Demon Slayer”, a new animeflick, has been playing to full houses in Japan, becoming the country’s second-highest grossing film ever.

The article mentions Japan's response to Covid-19 was to focus on clusters rather than implement lockdowns, which I guess is why they can make those recommendations (and probably also because of the country's strong mask-wearing culture).

Before Covid I went to the megaplex across the road from me maybe 10-15 times a year (always on Sunday mornings to avoid the teenagers because I'm an old now) and luckily for me since I live in Brisbane, Australia I have been able to go twice this year. First trip was for WW84 and the second was Godzilla vs Kong, so that's a 50% worth-it rate so far.

One limitation is being able to actually screen in good quality but 4K is helping out (some digital projections are only 2K anyway.) The other I imagine is the question of *permission* to screen things, see: Disney killing Fox rep screenings when they took over.
