I watched the original Meet the Parents last night and it's so much darker and more mean spirited than the Robert DeNiro/Ben Stiller movie. For those unaware, the original film was a tiny budget movie from 1992 which barely played in any theaters but it was seen by Steven Soderbergh who liked it and thought there should be a bigger budgeted version so Universal bought the rights and it bounced around before it became what everyone knows as Meet the Parents. Soderbergh himself was going to be making the movie at one point. Also it was financed by Emo Philips of all people.

Ever got excited for a movie soundtrack based on an artist's previous work, only to find out that it was a fairly generic film score? Because when I think of Jónsi (solo stuff, formerly Sigur Rós) his most popular movie contribution is: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HHOwYqxBbWU Which is far from: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=duFcf6lp8Tc I guess Junkie XL/Tom Holkenborg went through a similar phase, yet he had done a lot of video game stuff between his studio work and his current scores. So that transition was a lot smoother.

It's always difficult to separate what makes the artists's iconic discography work or not work vs. any experimentation they might take in their foray into film sound-tracking while transitioning to a different medium. For example: Oblivion, the Tom Cruise Sci-Fi flick, sold its music as being the work of the band M83. So to us, we get this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DYqu7ejXaZg Instead of this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dX3k_QDnzHE In this case, Anthony Gonzalez, the front-man for M83 said in an interview: quote:And now with his score to the new Tom Cruise sci-fi epic Oblivion, Gonzalez can finally add "Hollywood movie composer" to his resume. Sounds like a classic happy ending, right? Well, not so much. Looking back on his experience making the score, Gonzalez might be even more disillusioned by the film industry than before. "I started to work on this project with a lot of hope, saying, 'Oh, I'm going to do something super special and original,'" he says. "But you can't really, because there are so many people involved and so much money in the game that it's hard to change things. Hollywood kind of sucks the life out of you very quickly." And to contrast, the Dust Brothers soundtrack for Fight Club is just as revelatory and vital as the box office disaster known as the film itself. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NZ3RIV4MxDE KVeezy3 fucked around with this message at 03:46 on May 2, 2021 |

I wouldn't call Fight Club a box office disaster, it wasn't a huge hit on initial release, but it's a definite cult classic that made over $100 million internationally and probably made a poo poo ton more on home video release. It's not like it harmed the director or any of the main actor's careers. And it created an entire generation of douchebags able to read a film's text but not subtext.

Although the difference there is that the movie was made in France and the director is the brother one one of the M83 guys. The music rules. And the movie rules. Go watch it. It's SO loving GAY.

I'm not talking about its legacy, but its immediate reception. quote:Nevertheless, Fight Club, having had its release delayed until the autumn of 1999, faced an uphill struggle to win over audiences as well as critics. The latter seemed to be willing it to fail, and with Fox divided as to how it should be advertised, the studio was soon to be disappointed by its box-office take in America. By the time its tour of US cinemas was over, Fight Club had grossed just $37 million – considerably less than the $60 million it cost to make. And it's been speculated that this was logically a significant factor in the firing of executives who believed in and pushed for Fincher's vision.

Watched the 2014 Godzilla on a whim today, really enjoyed it, very unfamiliar with the series so was really thrown by the whole Muto sub plot but the visual spectacle was exactly what i wanted and there was just enough of a human touch to compliment the huge city destroying lizard. Will have to to seek out skull island next, feel like I've not many new monster movies since i dunno cloverfield or maybe even the 2005 Kong

Wow! I watched Color Out of Space last night and knew the director’s name sounded familiar. I didn’t realize it was Richard Stanley’s first picture since Island of Dr. Moreau! Shame that it apparently bombed at the box office, as it was a great movie.

Shin Godzilla is one of the best kaiju films in recent years, but it's a very different animal. Rampage is a perfect middle-ground between Godzilla and Skull Island.
