It's literally been the case since before t.v. or even radio was a thing. Some people just can't conceive of the fact that actors are not the role they play.

My favorite relatively recent example of this was when a bunch of right-wingers got upset that Bradley Cooper didn't hold the exact same conservative political views as Chris Kyle, who he portrayed in "American Sniper". Like they just assumed that he took the role because he believed in the same things Chris Kyle did, and not for the main reason any actor takes a role: to get a paycheck and make a living.

Or how the Heritage Foundation invited the cast of 24, a bunch of pretty liberal actors who know nothing about counter-terrorism and are led by arch socialist Kiefer Sutherland (grandson of New Democratic Party founder Tommy Douglas, aka the man who gave Canada universal healthcare), to a panel discussion on terrorism and how Jack Bauer is actually 100% right and not just a living hell world cartoon character hosted by the now thankfully departed Rush Limbaugh.

Mary Lynn Rajskub talked about in her stand up act once and said she spent the whole panel just cringing and going “Uhh, I don’t know anything about you people are talking about. I just sit at a desk writing affirmational letters to myself while Kiefer pretends to be mad at me and shouts DAMMIT, CHLOE all the time.” She felt legitimately embarrassed that no one else in the room seemed to be able to distinguish fantasy from reality. Oh and Rush Limbaugh molested her live on stage and it was super loving gross :barf:

I mean, I understand it insofar as manufacturing consent for Iraq and WANTING bad intel as long as it was the right intel for that goal and Thin Blue Line Are Troops etc. I don't understand why people keep defending it now that we know all the times they defended it before were bullshit and their own guys were telling them not to.

Yeah that's where I'm coming from. The great GOT implosion of 2019 was compressed into like.. 3 weeks..

Everything I've read about these people suggests to me that this Confederate show could have transcended television and turned the world upside down. And it would have played out over years.

I love the explanation he gave for that stunt too. He was filming a documentary of the band he was managing's European tour and it was like January 7th, so the hotel they were staying in was going to take down all their Christmas decorations the next morning. So Kiefer decided randomly to pay the hotel management and buy one of the trees, because he was drunk and is Kiefer Sutherland. He then proceeded to leap into the tree he just bought, destroying it.

It would've been a bigger trainwreck in terms of how repugnant people found it, but less in terms of how personally betrayed the audience would feel. GoT was in a unique position as a huge, well-liked cultural phenomenon before it devolved into genuine trash. Confederate would likely have been an obvious misfire from the outset.

But also, the crass and tasteless aspects of GoT's politics would probably offend fewer people anyway because it's medieval fantasy, a setting that is both insulated from real history and already mired in the idea that everyone has alien values about race or class or gender. Dany's messiah shtick feels more motivated because there's a general mythic-ness to everything anyway. It's not "reality." Nobody is actually, literally Yunkish to be offended by their depiction.

A show about how the US still has chattel slavery wouldn't have that excuse. They'd be depicting genuine atrocity that looked very familiar, happening to people who actually literally experience these things IRL. The line between respectful commentary on race and offensive exploitation would be micron-thin, and those dumb assholes would not have the capacity to control which one they were depicting.

Sodomy Hussein posted:

Yeah. They're pro-torture because it's scary and badass-sounding, serves the purpose of posturing military strength and ruthlessness. Academics pointing out that it "doesn't work" is completely irrelevant because "efficacy" was never the reason anyway. It serves conservative interests for the US to appear threatening. It's death cult poo poo, not the sort of thing you can rationally debate.

Likewise with child separation...this was never happening because there was a strategic rationale, it was monstrously cruel by design to make immigrants more scared of crossing the US border than whatever they were fleeing in their home countries. Debating the policy using data is like debating the policy of displaying severed heads on pikes.

It's amazing that this just keeps happening. CSI made life hellish for prosecutors, because suddenly the jury pool is full of people who imagine prosecutors are able to deliver loving 8K quality satellite images of the killer doing the crime, together with reverse-hacked DNA sequences and all the dumb poo poo they have on CSI, and when that doesn't happen because life isn't a TV show, it must mean the guy didn't actually do it.

Yes all of those things had an effect too however 24 was a hit TV show that socialized a lot of harmful ideas about the "right" way to do intelligence work that made it harder to convince the people in charge that actually, no, torture and "enhanced interrogation techniques" were not good things.

Not defending the empire or the MIC or any other harmful, exploitative system. Just pointing out that the lovely propaganda that pervades everything from tv shows to superhero movies makes it harder to get people to not make those systems worse or even understand the basic points of why said systems are bad.
