It's one of those things that you get really into once you've been watching it for a while. I think it clicks towards the end of the third series but I liked it plenty before that too.

The interview scenes in particular can be really fun. They sometimes feel like Phoenix Wright courtroom arguments.

seriously though, it's a great show which depicts how actually 'a few bad apples' in the police force corrupts the entire barrel. Not everyone is evil or, on the take, but a culture of silence, cover up and denial means that the truly bent bastards can get away with it.

If that was actually the final episode then it's making a pretty gut punching point about the nature of systemic corruption. Which is clever but not really a great ending to the series they've been building up.

This was my take as well. It's incredibly unsatisfying as a finale to six seasons of stories but the point its making about a buffoonish mediocre white man constantly failing upwards until he's Prime Minister Detective Superintendent and in a position of power that enables him to co-ordinate a series of criminal enterprises for various shitheads is certainly a fair one. And I doubt there's a more perfectly appropriate #GRATEBRITAN ending better than the mastermind turning out to be a lucky moron, for the heads of institutions to blame everything on a few bad apples, sweep it all under the rug and try and forget about it, for the only people who care about it face redundancy and/or forced retirement, and the anti-corruption team's powers to be weaker than ever before. Probably the most realistic thing the show's ever done.

In the crazy world of Line of Duty, a sober and realistic portrayal of systemic corruption and the decay of institutions which no well meaning effort can really stop is a shocking tonal shift. What about the REAL power behind the scenes the local Range Rover dealership

There must have been some covid related stuff which kept them from having Owen Teale or James Nesbitt on the set, two such big names as red herrings is a bit too much.

I was suprised that Jo got to have a happy ending, the best ending really for any of the characters with all the stuff she had been doing. It was not as bad as some but still bent as hell. But anytime Kelly MacDonald gets an ending happier then No Country For Old Men is fine with me, that was such a crushing moment.

No way James Nesbitt wasn't set up for a Season 7, either he faked his death, or flashbacks showing him working with Buckels that will tie into the new season.

so what's the consensus? worth starting the Line of Duty if you'd missed the hype before? not like Game of Thrones with a crap ending?

Yarp. The series could have concluded the same way at the end of season 3 or whatever but instead we've had several more years of 'Who is H?', which wasn't going to be answered directly because no answer could provide a satisfying end to a long drama. (The chief constable, the obvious candidate, only existed this season when AC-12 were watching the TV, so who cares what happens to him?)

Without a compelling narrative, I'm not sure what LoD has going for it aside from the set piece interviews. The dialogue is turgid - 'Alright mate', 'Cheers mate' and Steve, when speaking directly to another cop in the last episode, said something absurdly robotic like 'Did you find anything in relation to one or more of the following: [names of two dudes]'. It reminds me of Sherlock - the writers know what the audience likes so will keep pushing the same buttons. (Did it make sense for Kate to flee from the shooting in episode 5? Car chase exciting so off she goes.)

Probably, she wasn’t sure what was going to happen, who else was going to turn up, and who was in on it. I think it makes sense but yeah it’s a silly dumb show and that ending was underwhelming.

Edit: but I do enjoy it!

I'd say the first four seasons are all excellent in their own right and the other two are fine. It's definitely worth watching regardless of what you think of the ending. The people screaming that the last ten years have been a massive waste of time don't seem to understand the point of TV.

Series 6 ties up just about every long standing question and lingering plot point, and thematically ends in a way that is grimly appropriate and believable for a programme about institutional corruption in the UK. Obviously it could get another series greenlit the second I post this (give Chloe a promotion and focus on her with Boss Smugface in charge) but it did feel like everything had been answered and wrapped up, and the end of era for the leading trio and its creator.

Line of Duty really suffered from its writers being unable to de-escalate and having to tie every crime under the sun back to one all powerful organized crime group. Nobody on either side got a chance to breathe or take a step back, which is why Hastings went from a warning to a final written warning to a forced retirement over three seasons, and the OCG went from a believable criminal gang to a paramilitary force with sniper cover and endless Range Rovers full of machine gun toting goons getting into shootouts in the middle of a major British city over the same period.

You can have an overall program arc without having every single episode or even every series beating you over the head with it, and that's where it let itself down. Would it have been any less compelling to see Ted and the gang nail a slimy vice squad DCI for being behind the sex trafficking ring in series five? Would audiences have turned off if, as was briefly hinted at early in season four before the inevitable arrival of the Balaclava Men, Roz Huntley was "just" covering up her own crimes and those of her maybe serial killer husband?

I understand people wanting another series, but they've really left themselves nowhere to go. They can't at this point have the characters investigate something not-OCG without it being a completely different programme, so it's best they end it now and claim they're making a clever point about the nature of corruption rather than have another series on the same exponentially escalating track as the last, ending with Ted Hastings handing in his gun and badge before fighting a cyborg Chief Constable on top of the not-BT Tower.

Escalation is the scourge of episodic narrative. It ruins almost everything because it's so poorly understood.

I will say - again from the perspective of someone who’s only finished season 1 - that parts of it definitely reminded me of my biggest issue with Bodyguard, a show that had a good smaller story and then ruined it with this ridiculous over-the-top Machiavellian conspiracy thing. The drug-running gang in LoD season 1, who I assume are the same group from the rest of the show, definitely had these elements, seeming almost supernaturally smart and with weird lovely kid accomplices, but it was definitely way better at handling it than Bodyguard. These criticisms definitely make me wonder if it falls into the same traps later on.

Series 10 is the first series they did when it moved to Channel 4. It has a slightly bigger budget and it shows with several new task locations.

Series 1 is piss funny but feels a bit like a pilot series as the show was finding its feet. It's probably the best series until series 5 though. Series 5 is just incredible, mainly thanks to Bob Mortimer and Sally Phillips.

I persuaded my mum to watch it and then she came to me not even two weeks later and said, is there more? And I said yeah, you can watch the older ones on-- and she interrupted me no, I've watched all of it, are they *making* more. This is not a woman who usually binges anything.
