you literally think a person saying their NBA team of choice being better than the fucking 76ers is a 'schtick'

a literal thing you think.

My one minor gripe about it is that the winner of the 9-10 only has to beat the loser of the 7-8 once. Technically the loser of the 7-8 has to lose twice to be eliminated, but they should have to lose twice to the team who isn’t even in the playoffs, not lose twice in general. Having 3 play in games would be a bit much, but I think it’s absurd that you could potentially be a 7 seed and lose once to a 10 seed and not make the playoffs.

this is my issue as well, I think it should be a best of 3 between those two teams

also the schedule is super compact and doesn't give enough rest time to the 7 through 10 seeds compared to the others, especially given how compact the regular season has been this year

otherwise I like the play in and it's been nice to care about the regular season standings this close to the end of the season

i mean yes but the evidence at the moment suggests that it is extremely unlikely

The vaccine has wildly exceeded every expectation people need to stop being so pessimistic about it, it's not helping encourage people to go get it

The Playoffs already feel really long (not that I hate it, love more basketball), getting another series in there, and then making a team play maybe 3 more games before having to play the 1 or 2 seed on less rest just feels like it would make those first round matchups worse. A well rested 1 seed playing an 8 seed who just played 3 games.

Agree. I do really like the one-game and you're in system. Like you said, adds to the regular season ending standings watch and that one game feels like it's going to be must watch no matter what teams.

Play-in keeps more teams involved, spices up the end of the season, is a damper on tanking, makes for a more competitive playoffs in general, bakes in some rest for the actually good playoff teams, and winner-take-all games are fun. The downsides are that low-seed teams have to work a little harder to be swept by a 1-2 contender and also apparently that it doesn't solve the unrelated issue of conference imbalance

Basketball is so chalky that the playoffs were probably already too big, especially if you're going to have seven game series. The occasional 8-1 upset is very cool but it feels like the vast majority of the time those series are a boring blowout.

Hey everyone! A few months ago I asked for recommendations for a total beginner to basketball. On top of some great youtube channels a bunch of you recommended the FreeDarko guide to basketball history, and that book is FANTASTIC. Thank you so much! I found it hilarious, entertaining, and an awesome primer on the game's history that gave me a lot of context to things like "why is everyone always comparing Chamberlain and Russel?"

I appreciate everyone who took the time out to give me suggestions!

How does it make the playoffs more competitive in general? The play-in games are fun, but on average it will reduce the quality of matchups in the first round because you could fluke into a 30-win 10-seed in the playoffs.

Not that uncommon for a team to have a major star injured and coast on momentum into the seventh or eighth seed.

Boston might be a prime example of this case if Brown is down for the season. As great as Tatum and Payton Pritchard are, would they make a better opponent for the first round than the Pacers?

The play-in games themselves are going to be a lot more competitive even if the 1v8/2v7 (which weren't very competitive to start with) suffer somewhat. I bet in general a single play-in game is going to be more exciting that those series usually are.

You could just as likely have a star who would make it back in time for the first round but miss the play in, or have stars injured *during* the play-in and their team still win.

I agree that it makes the regular season and play-ins themselves more competitive but I think it's much more likely to make the 1st round less interesting than more.
