Seems like a lot of those small services use their platform as a Trojan for “copyright” protection spyware and other really lovely practices while if you get something from Steam you can have a degree of trust that it won’t be too shady.

I don't think Valve does any gatekeeping for steam at all. They just wait for people to report poo poo and then they kick it out. Speaking of, they're being sued by the company that owns Humble Bundle for being a monopoly.

They actually used to gate keep (which I think was just them only working with established publishers), until they started doing project greenlight and allowing certain Indy games. Eventually they just threw the gates wide open altogether.

Greenlight was amusing since it came about because indy devs wanted in (previously you'd basically have to contact Steam as you would Microsoft/Sony re: releasing on their platform), then there were a lot of complaints that the $100 upfront was too high a cost to participate in greelight, and now instead there's the "my Zelda-like Soulsborne pixel art platformer isn't getting the attention it deserves, why is steam discoverability so bad" complaints.

Here's a pretty good (and long) video about the Chinese social credit system from an actual Chinese academic on the system. They talk about a lot of the reality (it's still pretty cyberpunk dystopia but not yet nearly as widespread, coordinated, or all-encompassing as often portrayed) versus the anti-Chinese propaganda and just common misunderstandings.

I think it's important to keep an eye on even for Americans because if the various programs are seen as a success you bet your rear end some billionaire in San Jose will be ready to disrupt your poo poo, and a lot of it as it exists could be ported to the United States very easily without too much legal hair splitting and only a few greased palms I think.

Well that's the thing, that's basically what China's system is. Some specific aspects are a lot worse, kinda think like the US no-fly system but a dozen or so involving various programs or public services but the rules are super unclear, and usually in practice the threat of getting on one of those lists, even if the official can't actually do it, is enough to quiet a lot of complaints.

Some of it also includes way to sanction companies, which are actually in theory good, but in practice it's basically a part of the mindset you see in libertarians and tech bros in the US that everything, even (especially) social issues, is an engineering problem that just needs apps and management structures. Basically taking the whole community aspect out of communism, building a zero-trust system.

you can control a million skaven, take over and infest everywhere else by building hidden hives underneath normville. you have to take captives to feed your forces after battle, if they get hungry enough they may revolt. also, you have to deal with their inbuilt skaven treachery.

quote:

The lead water technician for Real Water—a Las Vegas-based company that produces “alkalized” bottled water now linked to liver failure cases—testified that he had no relevant experience to be a water technician when he was promoted to the position last August.

Real Water’s lead technician, Casey Aiken, 40, is a former vacuum and timeshare salesman who began working for Real Water last June after losing his job as a strip club promoter. According to a taped deposition from late March that was obtained by the Las Vegas Review-Journal, Aiken was promoted from his job of loading bottled water onto shipping pallets to the company’s lead technician after “a couple hours” of training.

In late November, just a few months after Aiken’s promotion, five infants and children who drank the water developed acute non-viral hepatitis, which led to acute liver failure, health officials say. The children ranged in age from 7 months to 5 years. Real Water’s branded water was the only common link between the cases.

Aiken’s own dog developed a liver illness that month after drinking water Aiken brought home from work. The dog recovered after his wife identified the water as the possible source of the illness and told Aiken to stop giving it to him.

After Aiken’s 2-year-old min pin/Chihuahua mix rescue dog drank the water, the dog started throwing up, and became lethargic. Aiken and his wife then took him to a veterinarian.

“It was an issue with his liver,” Aiken said. “We got him some pills. Three-hundred-dollar vet bill later, my wife, she’s the one that told me to stop giving him the water because she didn’t know what it was and that’s the only thing we changed, so we stopped giving the dog the water.”

“Did he get better?” attorney Will Kemp asked Aiken in the deposition.

“Yes,” Aiken replied.

It’s unclear if Aiken alerted the company to his dog’s illness and the potential problem with the water. However, Aiken said whatever the potential problem was, it wasn’t his fault.
