Seems like a lot of those small services use their platform as a Trojan for “copyright” protection spyware and other really lovely practices while if you get something from Steam you can have a degree of trust that it won’t be too shady.

Peanut President posted:I don't think Valve does any gatekeeping for steam at all. They just wait for people to report poo poo and then they kick it out. Speaking of, they're being sued by the company that owns Humble Bundle for being a monopoly. They actually used to gate keep (which I think was just them only working with established publishers), until they started doing project greenlight and allowing certain Indy games. Eventually they just threw the gates wide open altogether. Volmarias has issued a correction as of 19:57 on May 3, 2021 |

Eventually they just threw the gates wide open altogether. Greenlight was amusing since it came about because indy devs wanted in (previously you'd basically have to contact Steam as you would Microsoft/Sony re: releasing on their platform), then there were a lot of complaints that the $100 upfront was too high a cost to participate in greelight, and now instead there's the "my Zelda-like Soulsborne pixel art platformer isn't getting the attention it deserves, why is steam discoverability so bad" complaints. Here's a pretty good (and long) video about the Chinese social credit system from an actual Chinese academic on the system. They talk about a lot of the reality (it's still pretty cyberpunk dystopia but not yet nearly as widespread, coordinated, or all-encompassing as often portrayed) versus the anti-Chinese propaganda and just common misunderstandings. I think it's important to keep an eye on even for Americans because if the various programs are seen as a success you bet your rear end some billionaire in San Jose will be ready to disrupt your poo poo, and a lot of it as it exists could be ported to the United States very easily without too much legal hair splitting and only a few greased palms I think. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_4UurP59nDM

Nothus posted:Yeah we're already there, it's just that we did it the neoliberal way so it's patchwork, decentralized, largely run by private companies, and tied into the financial system. Well that's the thing, that's basically what China's system is. Some specific aspects are a lot worse, kinda think like the US no-fly system but a dozen or so involving various programs or public services but the rules are super unclear, and usually in practice the threat of getting on one of those lists, even if the official can't actually do it, is enough to quiet a lot of complaints. Some of it also includes way to sanction companies, which are actually in theory good, but in practice it's basically a part of the mindset you see in libertarians and tech bros in the US that everything, even (especially) social issues, is an engineering problem that just needs apps and management structures. Basically taking the whole community aspect out of communism, building a zero-trust system.
