Yeah, given his behavior of immediately cooperating with a mob boss when he's not even involved with the conversation is setting him perfectly as an actual fall guy later.

As far as the body dropped in the water in the credits, I suspect that's something that took place prior to the events of the story. It would explain Odokawa's unease at the pier and why Dobu threatened him with drowning in a tub.

Man, this story keeps bouncing around between Tarentino, Lynch, and Hitchcock. Can't wait to see more.

even more pathetically absurd is that girl's manager is buddy-buddy with yano's boss, and may well be catfishing people to make him some cash on the side. which would mean kakihana is taking money from the yakuza so that he can spend it on the yakuza

So Kakihana is now, in a weird kind of way, in the same boat as Odokawa's stalker was in that he's throwing good money after bad on a transparently doomed venture. And if you think about it, Shirakawa is in the same boat. And I kind of have the sense that Dobu isn't going to have a happy ending either…

Actually considering that let's play a game and turn it around, who in this show isn't transparently doomed? Who has the highest chance of getting out of this relatively unscathed when it all inevitably goes straight to hell?

Originally I'd say the missing girl but I'm leaning more towards Homosapiens at this point.

Odokawa is going to get the worst of it.

Kakihana is in second place for most doomed.

i feel like the cat is a metaphor for the missing girl, and given that it appears to have no eyes i'm gonna say things are probably not going to end well for it/her

honest guess is probably Yano - given their lack of appearance in the show outside the intro/other people's narration i'd venture they're actually not involved with the kidnapping at all and will end up fine by virtue of being completely unaware the plot is even happening (aka the Pocoloco strategy)

Oh my loving god, how could I forget Jim Jarmusch?

Especially given how the more "mundane" aspects of the story are emphasized through the "weird/odd" lens the director/showrunner of this seem to be aiming for.

She's honestly the only one I'd put money on at this point, just by virtue of being far enough away from the central plot she might escape the fallout. Everyone else though? Given this is noir the entrenched villains have a shot at persisting, but they could just as easily get shot to death out of the blue. Homo Sapiens are also unlikely to die, but given the nature of the show "go out languishing in misery and obscurity" is a likely fate for showbiz people in a show like this, and that's assuming they don't get involved with the criminal plot.

But as for the central cast associated with the Yakuza and the missing girl? Dire portents for all of them. I imagine the Mystery Kiss girl who isn't catfishing Kakihana might escape. Similarly, Gouriki might get out, but I could also see him ending up completely alone. He might also end up taking a bullet for someone and giving a final monologue about always wanting to save someone and that's why he's a doctor but could he ever really etc... As for Odokawa, his stalker, Shirakawa, Dobu, Kakihana, and Hippo kid? Snowball's chance in hell.

And the missing girl herself? Well if I knew that there wouldn't be a mystery, right?

Right, I forgot about that. Cripes, I see why they decided to give a relationship chart, this show is dense. I am definitely looking forward to a rewatch once it's all come out.

I personally think that the OP of this show needs to win for the best overall this year; I just love how with each new episode you realize how many details from the show tie into it, like with the llama lady doing her martial arts dance as her end transition, the cat guy having erasers show up when he hits the blocks, and the hippo guy having an inflated head because his video went viral

though now I'm worried about what happens between the Homo Sapien guys and the police :ohdear:

Maybe Tanaka turned to local Yakuza to help get revenge and it turns out the entirety of Mystery Kiss is a Yakuza front.

Man, I just finished the second episode and if you'd asked me before the credits popped up I would have sworn it had only been 10 minutes tops. It's actually crazy how engaging this show is and I'm definitely on board.

:edit: And now I'm caught up. For some reason based on the art style I was thought this show was a chill slice of life story about a middle aged dude chatting with his customers, not a tightly paced noir thriller about a missing teenager, idol groups, ebay sniping, gacha addiction, and social media influencers.

More evidence for the "People being animals is all in Odokawa's head" theory: Dobu is surprised that Odokawa can easily pick people out of a crowd, and Odokawa thinking it's weird that other's can't. Picking out individuals would be pretty easy if they are all different animals, the fact that this is hard for everyone else means they don't see the same as Odokawa.

I've read enough news stores of Lotto winners declaring they're going to build a church with the money, only to later be found in an alley after losing half of it to a hooker in Vegas, for me to expect the most intelligent actions out of the average person.

he's still downright benign compared to imminent catastrophes like tanaka and kakihana. and it's kind of sweet that this little doofus' first and second ideas for his billion yen were "i'm going to spend it on cd's" and "i'm going to make it rain on the nice taxi driver who gave me the numbers"

it's astounding how stupid kakihana is, the man literally does not have a plan

i mean say what you will about tanaka, at least he has the excuse of having gone completely insane. kakihana, being of sound mind and body, has still decided that his best course of action is taking out a high-interest loan from the yakuza so that he can pretend to be rich and possibly gently caress a teenage girl before the yakuza murder him for not paying them back lottery skunk does not even register on the stupid scale in comparison, he's just being naive instead of whatever the gently caress that is

It also came up with Goriki last episode too, he was able to see that it was Shirakawa talking to Dobu in a dark alley, at night, while driving his taxi.

In an easy to miss moment in the preview because of Crunchyroll's player.

"Most plans are critically flawed by their own logic. A failure at any step will ruin everything after it. That's just basic cause and effect. It's easy for a good plan to fall apart. Therefore, a plan that has no attachment to logic cannot be stopped."
Okay so I don't have Crunchyroll premium so I can't talk about the most recent episodes (and also had to avoid reading the last page or so) but I just wanted to chime in and say that the opening for this show loving slaps. Like, the smoothest goddamn thing I've heard all year. Give Skirt and Punpee some sort of award for that poo poo.

Also, while the dialog has some similarities to Tarantino, specifically Pulp Fiction (heavy use of outside references the audience is just expected to understand, weirdly civil conversations even in tense moments, etc.), I'd actually compare Oddtaxi more strongly to the Coen Brothers, but not quite as full-on comedic, if I had to make a comparison to western media. The way all these different characters connect, their motivations, and how it all somehow links to a single central event is reminiscent of Burn After Reading, in particular, and I have a feeling it will end in a similar fashion.
