Yeah I was gonna say a lot of that is solved by judicious taking advantage of journey mode.

It can additionally be very fun to restrict yourself to subsets of Terraria's gameplay instead of going the completionist collect every achievement route. I've played way more pre-hardmode than hardmode overall because I always liked starting fresh maps and trying to speed through the early game; usually missing tons of items was part of the challenge and fun. My wife and I had a ton of fun fishing by treating it in its IMO intended way (an idle clicker game, while you watch TV or read forums) while the pretty fishing music plays and occasional rewards roll in. Not as a mandatory grind. And again, since it's a sandbox game it's even possible to explore very fun modes of gameplay that ignore much of the game's progression, like the easter egg hunt I tried last time I played where we all just hid stuff in the world for each other and ignored progression which is more like an adventure mode. There are frustrating ways to design a game for sure, but the nice thing about sandbox games is how there are so many workarounds.

The best you can hope for, for what you're actually asking, is just to wait till modding comes out. If that's too far away, then as people have said, you have two options, both of which are compromises. Either go back a version and load up on mods, or stick with what you've got and explore your options a bit.

I would suggest playing in Journey Mode all around, it minimizes the grinding, but if you're already going and not wanting to start over you could also use an inventory editor or a map editor (which lets you put any item into a chest that's in the world) and give yourself the few things you're really hurting over.

Ultimately, I think the intent was not to have every player grind every item, it was to make these items rare so each playthrough can be a little different.

I stay clear of Journey Mode because my brain has no restraint and I will just cheat everything in.

First time playing in 6 years, please tell me there's a smarter and more efficient way to use the hammer when I'm decorating my house by making slopes? This can't be the only way of using it, because click individual blocks 4 times to get the slope I want x 100 blocks is just :wtf: Is there a copy command for the hammer, or some way to make it so a single click immediately picks the slope I want?

I think the hammer's a little smarter now? Like if there's a slope that'll match up with the adjacent tiles, that'll be the first one the block changes to. Or maybe I hallucinated that.

Is there no sort of organic, ingame progression? I feel incredibly lost unless I scour the wiki for twenty minutes before knowing what to do next. The guide isn't much help as he's vague. The crafting system is also frustrating because you can't see what you could make, unless you have the exact combination of stuff in your hands, and using the guide to check every item every time is zZzZz.

Kill the initial 3 bosses, then kill the Wall of Flesh and then the game starts.

Crafting also accepts all the content in an open chest

As for game progression

Get silver/tungsten armor + gold/platinum weapon
Kill the first 3 top world bosses

Make armor from their drops

Clear the dungeon

loot the floating islands

Dig down to the underworld and mine obsidian/hellstone
Make armor from that
Kill the wall of flesh

Smash altars with the pwnhammer
Mine the new ores until you have a full set of adamantite/titanium armor + weapons

Kill the 3 mechanical bosses
make Hallowed armor and weapons from their drops

Head to the underground jungle and mine Chlorophyte and make armor/weapons from that
Kill Plantera

Go to the underground jungle and clear out the temple + kill Golem

Clear out the dungeon in hardmore

Kill the lunatic cultist to start the celestial pillar event
Kill the moonlord (game won)

Now you can kill the moonlord a few more times to make a set of weapon and armor from his drops.


This could take anything from 20 to 100 hours depending on how much stuff to do you find on the way.

I'm not looking for a guide or walkthrough. I just feel like following a wiki to complete the game robs me of the sense of discovery and fun, but without the wiki, I'm lost and have zero idea what to do. How did people first figure out what to do when Terraria was relatively newish, without a fully fleshed out wiki to help? On the one hand, the wiki saps a lot of enjoyment for me, but on the other hand, if I didn't use the wiki, I'd miss out on tonnes of cool content because it's so obscure.

they played the game? the first boss spawns more or less automatically. the next boss you should find through exploration and going "huh I wonder what those hearts/orbs are and what I can do about them". then your gear should be good enough to explore all the way to the ocean on either side of the world.

I feel like Terraria is actually really well guided, especially now. Just go out and explore and play with stuff. The guide's hints change as you progress and they're not actually that vague, just brief. Playing through without the wiki, you'd probably miss Duke Fishron, but that's about it.

when the game first came out there were only three bosses and nothing much to do besides kill them over and over and build a house. over the next many years additional bosses got added and it all built on top of each other

Also after you reach major steps in the game you'll get a message in the chat box telling you something else has happened. Killing the mechanical bosses gets you "the jungle is growing restless", for example.

The game also highlights the achievement closest to your next step in progression, next to your inventory, if you only want a very slight hint to what you're looking for.

I think the only really cryptic part is figuring out how to summon the underworld boss, but that's something that's likely to happen by pure accident if you spend long enough down there.

I think progression feels fairly natural, although this does come from the perspective of someone who's been playing from the beginning.

The first boss spawns automatically after you've done enough exploring underground.
Beating EoC attracts an NPC that gives you the tools to clear corruption/crimson and talks a lot about it, encouraging you to go there and mess with it (summoning the second boss).
From there, you've got the equipment to explore the whole world and you're let loose on the first real branching progression and class specialisation stuff. Skeletron is hard to miss when you're exploring the surface, and after that both the jungle and the dungeon easily take you very deep underground, enough to see the water become lava and clue you in that there's going to be something at the bottom.
Hell is the clear final area and messing around enough in there will probably summon the wall of flesh, although this one is a bit more obscure.

I’ve played Terraria a ton and honestly had the same complaint. What made the game click for me was installing the Recipe mod and the Boss checklist mod. They function as an easy in-game reference that I could check if I was stuck on something.

I get how stuff can be discovered organically but IMO that works best when playing co-op with friends. (And they were still playing wow when I started Terraria)

The general flow of the game is explore until you hit a new area where everything kills you —> Look for chests/ores/ etc to improve your gear so you don’t die —> Explore the areas you can now safely access and/or fight to a boss to get even better gear to expand your explorable space even more —> repeat

No area has enemies that can kill me cause I just cheese them all with my yoyo, or am I not going deep enough? Bees / hornets, those weird lizardmen that gwak at you, the corruption zombies with massive heads and the flying leeches, I curbstomp them all. Only thing that can gently caress me up are the jungle bats because it's so hard to smack them.

Yeah once you get a handle on corruption and jungle enemies you're largely set to go for one of the harder areas. One you can find on the surface, and one is deeper underground. The guide should point you to both of these.

Once you find and kill the boss of the harder area, the game will give you a prompt in the lower left of which area has new content. I think this carries through to the endgame, whenever you unlock new things.

Do prehardmode bosses disappear once I get to hardmode? Or can I always go back and do them at a later date (Queen Bee is currently kicking my rear end cause I'm too lazy to make an arena).

At least the bees don't go away until you actually run out of hives. For that one and the rest you can always bring them back using special items, but you're gonna have to do the thing you don't like (google the wiki) to see how to make those summoning items.

You can always fight any boss you've unlocked, by various means. Even Skeletron is farmable. Most of them require crafted summon items, which are typically crafted at a corrupt/crimson altar (for pre-hardmode bosses) or an advanced anvil (for post-hardmode bosses).

Game is great, despite my whining about lack of progression that doesn't rely on studying the wiki. Just had a bunch of poo poo pop off all at once and it was absolute action. Looking forward to going deeper into the abyss with my new crimson armour cause I beat the Brain of Cthulhu 2nd try. Just smacked his face with grenade after grenade and had no idea what was even happening from all the effects. Then I checked out the meteor that spawned, then farmed Eye of Cthulhu three times in a row, and then faced down a Goblin invasion.

I wish pickaxe progression was a tad faster, cause I feel like I'm pretty far into the game (in terms of hours, still prehardmode), yet my mining speed is poopoo with the 75% power pick. I've got no clue if things get absolutely insane down the line in terms of mining speed. Another whine segment about to begin on how I think gear can get upgraded a tad too quick for minimal gain. I'll do one mining / adventure run and come back with a whole bunch of ores, make new tools that are 5-10% better power, then do another run and have enough to upgrade another 5-10% power. My chest is filled with obsolete gear that I only ever used for a grand total of 20-30 mins each. I think I upgraded my axe three times without using it once, as I kept thinking if I needed it, the extra power would help, but I upgraded so fast it never made a difference.

Yeah, that's fair. There's a shitton of gear tiers, and some of them blow by pretty fast. There's a pretty distinct speed upgrade once you start picking up hardmode tools.

But, uh, chest, singular? I think I had 15 chests in my dedicated storage room before I hit hard mode (none of them full, but each dedicated to building materials or banners or old tools or whatever). There's a "quick stack to nearby chests" button in the inventory that's a godsend once you start organizing your storage.

you can mine out that meteor if you have a pickaxe with at least 50% power for some pretty cool armor and gun. there's an accessory you can craft that will make it so that standing on said meteor won't burn you, or just use platforms and patience.

Running back and forth I get tons of mimics, moths and undead merchants but haven't seen a single Lost Girl in hours of farming. I've nabbed three Uzis from the Angry Trappers that have spawned, if you want to know how long I've been on this.

Personally I find a cavern layer minecart track and just ride it back and forth with a lifeform analyser and she will spawn pretty quickly.

You can sell old gear to vendors or do what I do and build a museum for all your armor tiers and gear with armor stands and item frames.

Oh and put down more chests, you're going to want an entire warehouse by the end of the game.

I always pick up every chest I run across. Both for "if a chest turns up on the metal detector or whatever it is gives that info I know there's new loot to find" and also to save on materials making chests for storage.

I still have never found a lost girl on my current save, but I do have a lot of homing/long range weapons and one of the times I went searching for one that popped up on my rare creature radar, I found a metal detector lying on the ground. I sometimes wonder how much rare loot I've missed out on, but there's no use in worrying about that.

I found the most fun way to play is to give myself the Celebration Mk2 and 4000 Mini Nuke II whenever I start a new game.


Celebration Mk2 can clear a whole screen worth of rock and ores in a few seconds and has no friendly fire. It removes a lot of tedium from the early game.

Shroomite Claws with the mining potion, ancient chisel, and cake buff can dig fast enough to keep up with Hermes Boot running speed. It really puts a feeling of power in you.
